The Columbus Blue Jackets are probably the franchise that a lot of people forget exists, in most cases. The sad part is that the Jackets haven't done much to break that narrative. This franchise just can't do anything right; or should I say, everything falls apart on them.
This year, like many before them, is no exception. This video is in dedication to the franchise doomed to be the enhancement talent of the NHL.

Columbus fan here who appreciates your work. Some thoughts: -They could have offered Panarin his own private jet and a house in Connecticut he could commute to and from and he still wasn't signing with them/us. -They never offered Duchene a contract. -The Seth Jones trade was highway robbery, and I'm still laughing. -I think it was last year that Jenner would have had 30 goals if his back didn't explode. -The buzz phrase was The Lars Bar in hiring Torts' replacement. It should've been the GD Torts Bar. -Rookie coaches in Columbus tend to do this weird thing where the first season isn't too bad, albeit a roller coaster, and then season 2 is a dumpster fire. Vincent has skipped straight to year 2. -Gaudreau has been back to a PPG pace over the last 10-15 games. Hoping to Christ it stays that way. -I would have driven to DC and personally packed his house if it meant Peter Laviolette came here.

With Duchene, people were quick to point out around that trade deadline that he bought a house in Nashville. I haven't seen a pending UFA that got traded be so locked in to his next destination since Thomas Vanek (traded to Montreal at the deadline but all but had his heart set on Minnesota)

@@FirearmofMutiny YES. That was always such a silly excuse to me that he only signed there 'because the Rangers are a wagon', at the time he signed there, the Rangers were operating with every expectation of tanking in 2019-20. The core they were competing with was mostly picked apart by that point (Stepan regressed beyond repair and was traded), guys like Zuccarello, Nash, Hagelin and Moore were long gone, Staal was regressing, McDonagh and Shattenkirk were gone too and they had pretty much nothing coming up the pipeline to their knowledge. Panarin wasn't a contending move, it was desperation. Panarin signed at a time where NOBODY knew what Mika Zibanejad and Igor Shesterkin would become, and more than that, guys like Chytl hadn't broken out yet either. At that time, the Rangers were operating under the assumption that a 36 year old Lundqvist might play until he was 39 or 40, and that Georgiev was taking the reins afterward (not Shesterkin). The only reason it didn't work out that way is because the Rags caught fire in like December-ish that year and rode that wave for 2 months. Lost early in the play-ins, lucked into the draft lottery and got a player who they seriously thought might be a franchise talent, and they spent like it in free agency. Also remember, at the time, people thought Adam Fox was *maybe* a Top 4 Dman, very few people had him pegged as one of the next greats at the position. The Panarin signing changed what otherwise could've been a terrible half decade for the Rangers, but anybody who thinks the inspiration behind him going there was simply to 'contend' is wrong to me, a guy who's intention is chasing rings would've taken $5-7 mil to play in a Tampa or Vegas at that time, not go for the high dollar New York deal. And it was never gonna happen in Columbus because the Blue Jackets were slammed up against the cap ceiling at the time, and there was no way they were signing more than one or two of those guys. Bobrovsky and Panarin got paid more than the Jacket could've afforded and that's BEFORE the payday that Duchene got. It was so bad Nashville had to buy it out half way through and let Ryan Johansen go in the same breath. The Blue Jackets just got stuck in a situation where they caught fire right as a bunch of their contracts were expiring; they essentially paid the Cup tax, except for the part where they win a cup.

As a longtime Red Wings fan who works in Columbus, it's a damn shame this franchise only has ONE Playoff Series win in their entire existence Yes, their EPIC UPSET of Tampa Bay gave us the meme of memes before COVID, but it's stunning to see a franchise based in the Midwest has struggled to even gain a footing in the NHL. Even more shocking, the Vegas Golden Knights, a team based in the fucking Movaje Desert already have a Stanley Cup in under 10 years of existence Columbus is a great sports town and the Jackets do have a very strong following locally throughout Central Ohio. But it's hard playing second fiddle to the OSU Buckeyes, especially when they dominate the news cycles and completely blank the Jackets off the sports page unless the Buckeyes are a total dumpster fire. Nationwide Arena is a extremely nice venue and it's got one of the best features in the Cannon. You'd expect a situation like this to be bestowed onto the Arizona Coyotes and not the Jackets This franchise is hitting rock bottom AGAIN and after the Mike Babcock debacle, who knows how long it'll be before this franchise is relevant again or wins another playoff series. Here's to hoping this team can turn it around soon. The NHL is meant for parody and it's about time Columbus gets a taste of the good stuff

Could have added 2017 to list of times Columbus was good but with a catch. That might have been the one time in their existence they had a legitimately good team. They finished 4th in the league that year (108 points) and had a 16 game-winning streak. Unfortunately, the 2nd and 1st placed teams (Pittsburgh and Washington) were also in their division, and due to the playoff format, they had to play Pittsburgh in the first round. Sometimes I wonder what is it with Ohio-based teams that keep getting snake bitten. I am talking about the pros, cause at least Ohio State is flourishing enough that football prospects want to come to Columbus. The Cavaliers did bring a championship to Ohio, but do not forget that their biggest star (Lebron James, who grew up in Akron) spurned them for the Heat before deciding to come home, and then left them again after fulfilling his promise. The Bengals have a solid core right now, but this team is the definition of "close, but never close enough" in its entire existence. As for the Browns, almost two decades of gross incompetence means everyone and their grandma still make "LOL Browns" jokes till today. I guess that is probably the only saving grace of being a Jackets fan: there are bigger shining stars and laughing stocks around you to be left alone.

I picked the Nashville Predators instead and despite some of the frustrations inherent in pulling for them, I don't regret it. Fingers crossed for y'all, Jackets fans - Columbus is a great city and I'd love for y'all to have a Stanley Cup one of these days

I don't think it was ever a Columbus problem for most guys, it was more of a Blue Jackets issue. Panarin was leaving anyone for the Rangers. Bob / Seth / PLD left for reasons that had nothing to do with the city itself. Not to mention Jarmo's "I have the hammer" negotiating tactics leaving some guys with bad tastes in their mouths. This doesn't even begin to cover everything, but it stunk seeing the city take shit for poor management creating a situation undesirable for most free agents

I went to my first game at Nationwide on Monday against the Knights. That arena is awesome, and 17,000 people showed up. It was rocking all night! The fans are great, and the arena is great. The town deserves a winner for a change. On the other hand having a team within a 5 hour drive who has incredibly cheap tix is pretty cool!

I knew as a CBJ fan a video was coming on them sooner or later. I’m surprised this wasn’t sooner. I love hockey, but I’ve lost patience with this team to the point that I can’t bring myself to spend money to go see them play, and I live 20 minutes from NWA.

I live in Cleveland and got season tickets because they were relatively cheap. Nationwide has a great atmosphere and the team has a decent fan base that does show up. It sucks that I have to drive 2 hours to watch a 40 point team play like short bus District 5 sometimes, but it’s better than no NHL hockey where I live

It's crazy but Columbus sells out a lot of games and is making a ton of revenue. Fans from Cincy and Cleveland make that trip to the arena. I'm a Canes fan but CBus is the closest team to me and I make that 2 hour trip at least 10 times a season. Columbus is underrated as a great city. The Arena District is amazing and now the true winners in the city are down the road (The Crew). Fantilli looks like a great prospect. The team needs better management and an actual direction. I think Johnny G can rebound. The Russian line is looking deadly and guys like Johnson and Sillinger have quietly become competent players.

I’m a Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Reds fan so I consider myself a bit of a subject matter expert on liking shitty pro sports teams. I preface this to say the Blue Jackets are the only team I’ve ever given up on. Jarmo‘s addition to “grit”, desperately holding on to a coach that would bench players for not blocking a slapshot with their dick in practice that 30% of the league doesn’t want to play for (Athletic player survey ‘19), letting any player who’s contract was expiring walk after winning a playoff series for the first time in over 20 years, while being fine with paying Nick Foligno and Brandon Dubinski and giving them top 6 minutes. I gave up on the team in the 20 off-season but couldn’t help but feel bad for my friends who still follow that trash hole when they promoted the worst assistant coach in the NHL, Brad Larsen, to the head job when Jarmo FINALLY was told to get rid of Torts. I would call following that team, a narcotic, but narcotics at least give you a high.

I've been a CBJ fan for the past 22 seasons. They've been my favorite pro sports team. As difficult as this season has been, I have high hopes for the team (knocking on wood furiously). JD and Jarmo started turning things around after the franchise's first decade of bumbling around. Having said that, the front office needs a clean house and help bring in constant success and winning for the team. I'm a diehard Buckeye and CBJ fan, so at least they're getting their first outdoor game (YES!!) But in all seriousness, the CBJ need to clean house and bring in constant competitive success. Godspeed. Keep the vids coming UTree!! Big fan).

I just want to know why the Crew is the only professional sports team in Ohio that gets anything done. Don't get me wrong, I love my Crew, but I'd also love it to feel like there's actually a chance I see a Cleveland world series win or Jackets Stanley cup win in my lifetime. At this rate, I'm expecting neither will happen. It just sucks. Our fanbase is so passionate (we sell out games, despite being bottom-feeders), and it feels like all we ever get rewarded with is a middle finger. Finally got a series win in amazing fashion? All your star players are gone, and TB wins back to back cups. Finally get a star player to come here? He's underperforming and, either, doesn't have enough help around him or everyone else gets hurt. Finally suck hard enough to get a good chance at the next big star instead of another mid-range first round pick? You're gonna win meaningless games at the 11th hour to lose the suck race and get third anyways (pure luck we got Fantilli who is great, but the "what ifs" will always remain). I just want SOMETHING, man. Anything that doesn't feel like it'll come with an asterisk.

It used to not always be that way with the Crew. I used to be a fan over a decade ago and they did everything they could to cheap out after they won the cup in 2009. They let Sigi Schmid walk and completely gutted the team in 2011 that it took years to get out of and if it wasn’t for the fans fighting to keep their team, MLS would of allowed them to relocate to Austin. Remember that was a done deal. I want to say it starts with ownership since Clark Hunt was a terrible owner, but Jimmy Haslam has been hit and miss with the Browns.

Hopefully this video can be a reverse-jinx for the Blue Jackets and they can turn things around like the Crew did after Anthony Precourt was run out of town. Speaking of the Crew, if you want to do more Columbus related videos, "Anthony Precourt: MLS's Dean Spanos" would be also an interesting video concept. Also: "San Diego Padres: A Legacy of Failure" or "San Diego Sports: Nothing but Pain" in an attempt to reverse-jinx the San Diego Sports Curse, though I imagine Tree would hold off on that one if/when Tatis and Machado leave ringless.

The Jackets have been the NHLs doormat for over 20 years. Ever since they joined the league. They have never had a season where they were better than just mediocre, 2016-17 was their best season and they were just mediocre that year, they have never had home ice advantage ever. They should honestly have been put in Cincinnati instead of Columbus

I drop a Tree reference on the Jim Cornette experience 2 days ago, and here’s Tree using wrestling vernacular. An idea for a video I want to pitch. Dave Meltzer, Legacy of Failure video??
