@@generalkinobi6215 There is even more to that punchline than the lawsuit. The word "Donkey" is another word for "Ass". One of the people who made Donkey Kong (I *believe* it was Miyamoto, but I am not 100% sure who exactly), said that the name "Donkey" came from wanting to portray him as stupid and bumbling, or in other words, an ass. Nintendo made King Kong into *DONKEY* Kong. Which is where the line in this video comes in: "I'll make an *ass* out of you like Nintendo did."
Btw the "bring in iron man and thor and I'll still destroy ya" is a reference to a crossover comic where Godzilla outright defeated Captain America and Iron Man and matched Thor in a test of strength and defeated him after absorbing thor's lightning. Also, 'Destroy ya' might be a reference to Destoroyah, the strongest adversary Godzilla ever fought in the Heisei era of movies.
Yup no defeating the king of monsters, plus saddest thing is that the marvel heroes lasted WAY longer than superman did LOL got wrecked in the first issue
The verse "Damn I despise you/You make weak tokusatsu/Soft like some tofu" is an actual haiku as it fits the 5-7-5 syllable format of a traditional haiku considering the word "tokusatsu" alone is 4 of the 7 syllables needed for that line.
Everyone misses the ass-brain line - it's a reference to the lore that Godzilla and similar kaiju need two brains to operate their massive bulk, and Godzilla's secondary is near his pelvis, where the spine meets it. It's the concept that Pacific Rim's drifting and two-brain kaiju setup was predicated on. Additionally, the Oxygen Destroyer was a weapon used against Godzilla and nearly killed him, and it created Desteroyah, who very nearly or did kill Godzilla outright, and was massively powerful, even moreso than King Ghidorah.
You missed a bunch of fun references pertaining specifically to Godzilla: "No way your ass-brain is hanging with these monkey bars" - In the Heisei Era movies (80s and 90s), they tried to explain how a creature as big as Godzilla could function by saying he actually had to brains - the second one located where his tail meets his back "You came off the base for Frankenstein first time we made a movie" - the original script for King Kong vs Godzilla was actually Frankenstein vs King Kong, and they replaced Frankenstein pretty late into pre-production. Godzilla even gets revived by lightning in the film. "And I dunked on you like Barkley at the base of Mt. Fuji" - there was a comic where Godzilla fought basketball star Charles Barkley. Yes. It's real. "So they bring a mammal to nurse your films back to health" - not Godzilla related, but: a defining trait of mammals is that they nurse their young. yay, puns! "You weren't even the bombest monster from the sea G" - again, not specifically Godzilla related, but "sea G" sounds like "CG", maybe referencing how both characters (in the movies and this video) are portrayed with CG, despite originally being made practically "This is kid's stuff send in Minilla" - Minilla's Godzilla's son in the 60s movies "I'm an oxygen destroyer, and now you're 0-2!" - The oxygen destroyer was the weapon used to kill Godzilla in the original movie "With the beast the beast from 20,000 fathoms couldn't fathom" - The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms is a Ray Harryhausen movie about a giant lizard wreaking havoc in a city (maybe New York, not sure), and was cited as an inspiration by the people behind the first Godzilla movie "You could come at me with Iron Man and Thor, I'll still destroy ya" - "Dest(o)royah" is the name of one of Godzilla's enemies, who actually killed him off in the final Heisei movie "My voice cuts deep like I'm rubbing on a double bass" - Godzilla's iconic roar was created by rubbing a rubber glove on bass strings - his voice literally sounds like "rubbing on a double bass" "Damn I despise you, you make weak tokusatsu" - you weren't entirely wrong there, but the definition of tokusatsu is much broader. Godzilla is actually considered pretty much the progenitor of the tokusatsu genre, and not just that, but Ultraman, which more or less popularized the transforming hero genre, was created by Eiji Tsuburaya, who also worked on the special effects of the first Godzilla movie, and came up with the idea of suitmation aka simulating a giant monster (or robot, or hero, or alien...) by having an actor in a suit walk through a miniature city "Anyways, that was more disappointing than your anime" - there were two relatively recent anime versions of Godzilla. the first one, a trilogy of movies, was not very well received. unsure about the second one, which was a series. it was just super complicated to follow. and three great lines one after the other you didn't comment on at all: "You're the only Honda vehicle that don't retain no worth" - Ishiiro Honda was the director of the original Godzilla movie - a "Honda vehicle". Honda is also a car brand. "There'll be no victory dance, your G-fans will leave upset" - In "Godzilla vs Monster Zero", Godzilla does a very goofy victory dance on the moon. It enjoys cult status among G fans. Seriously, look it up. It's great. "Cause if you dropkick at me, I'll shove a tree down your neck" - a twofer! So, in "Godzilla vs Megalon", Godzilla does a weird move where he lies horizontally on his tail and then slides into his opponent, dropkicking him. similar to the victory dance, it's an iconic scene for how goofy it is. and in "King Kong vs Godzilla", King Kong rips out a tree and shoves it down Godzilla's throat - another iconic scene. "I'm the Apex great ape, great with the ape ax" - Apex was both the name of the terrorist organisation in the second Godzilla MonsterVerse movie and the evil corporation in the MV's Godzilla vs Kong movie "Like All Monsters Attack, your raps are recycled crap" - the later movies in the 60s and 70s reused a lot of footage from earlier movies, and All Monsters Attack was by far the worst offender. It's generally considered to be the worst Godzilla movie ever made. These guys just really did their homework. As usual, really.
Admittedly, I never expect to catch everything, as it's usually just a first impression reaction, but clearly I didn't know as much Godzilla and Kong lore as I expected, or as you do! Thanks for the clarifications!
@@Insaneian No problem, it's a lot ^^" I also know basically nothing about King Kong, so there might be references neither of us picked up on. (also, seriously, check out the Godzilla victory dance and dropkick. they're amazing.)
The bringing in a mammal comment refers to them bringing in Kong to fight Zilla . The sea g is yes ggi but you missed the kraken comments , he’s referring to a cgi kraken . Kong walked through a city way before Zilla . the anime comment is actually about the old Godzilla anime
@@thomasparkedinvilliers.1314 there is no "old Godzilla anime". unless you're talking about the Hanna-Barbera cartoon (not an anime) or the show based on the 1998 American movie (not an anime). I don't see why it's more likely that a line about "disappointing anime" should reference an American cartoon if there are two recent anime, one of which is generally seen as disappointing. and yes, obviously that refers to them bringing in Kong, that's what Ian said in the video. I never said Godzilla walked through a city before Kong, so no idea what that comment is about. also, "Zilla" and "Godzilla" are two separate characters. Godzilla actually fought Zilla in the 2004 movie Godzilla Final Wars.
interesting fact Death Row was implemented in 1933 the first King Kong movie released that same year so in essence King Kong is in fact as old as Death Row
Some references you missed. 20:40 Minilla was Godzilla's son in the Showa era and returned in Final Wars. 25:40 This is a double reference. The first is a Marval comic where Godzilla fight different Marval characters. The second reference is the line "destroy ya" probably references Destoroyah, a monster from the Heisei era. 28:28 Yes, there was a Mechani-Kong. Originating from the Ranking-Bass King Kong show, he was then reimagined in King Kong Escapes, a Toho original King Kong movie. The line "Monkey see me out do you, like I did to Mechani-Kong" refer to how Mechani-Kong has fallen into obscurity and hasn't appear in much media today, while Mecha Godzilla has become part of Toho big five and is much well known. 28:45 When Kong bring up his anime, I think it's referencing to the trilogy of anime films release from 2017-1018. They were Godzilla first official appearance in anime, and they are not like for so any reasons. We sense gotten an anime series which was more liked, but those three films are consider some of the worst the franchise has to offer.
Another thing with "You can come at me with Iron Man and Thor, I'll still destroy yah" is a reference to both Destroyah (monster he fought) and to an old Godzilla vs Avengers comic (1977) where he fought Avengers. Godzilla matched Thor in strength and pretty much slapped Iron Man away in that run. Here he's saying that even they attack him all together, he will still win.
I think there's also a pun on iron there too. "You shouldn't try to talk about the atom... You could come at me with Iron Man..." Nice follow up to Kong's bars about oxygen.
"I'll make an ass out of you like Nintendo did" That would be Donkey Kong, Donkey = Ass as in the word for Donkey. And it was Universal who tried to sue Nintendo, however Nintendo argued that Universal only got King Kong in the 70s because they claimed he was in Public Domain. So Nintendo used Universal's argument against them.
With regards to the Nintendo Court case. Nintendo who was being sued by universal proved that King Kong was in the public domain and universal had no rights to King Kong or royalties. Universal knew this because they had made a lawsuit to remaking Kong which established that King Kong was public domain but they continue with the lawsuit against Nintendo because they thought they could easily push them around.
I found personally, Lloyd as Kong was stylin’ more with his bars, whereas Peter as our king of the monster was just landing brutal hit after brutal hit.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the term "death row" to describe prisons for those sentenced to death was first coined in 1933, the same year The first King Kong movie was released. So Kong literally is as old as death row.
Something I saw someone mentioned in another video is that Snoop also originally was partnered with Death Row Records, so I guess it's a double meaning. Edit:He mentioned that in the video, I'm dum.
Wario really loves your reactions Insane Ian, it was due time until you reacted to this! Wario wishes he could sub to your Patreon but I spent all my money on garlic (im poor).
I did remember the American cartoon 98 Godzilla however the Godzilla Anime was done during the mid 2010s and while Toho tried to make it a season it barely reached 10 episodes overall and ended up failing in Japan. I think there was also a Netflix Anime attempt for Godzilla that also failed to generate attention because Japanese weren't really fans of Streaming except for the mainstream Japanese people who weren't Kaiju fans.
Hello again, fellow Ian! Just as the last time, I enjoyed your take on the references in the bars and the fact that you’re reacting to something out of the norm. This was great!
When he mentions thor and ironman . They are reffering to the comics when the avengers tried to fight godzilla. But even thor showed up said nah i cant take him . And left .
"This is kids stuff, send in Minilla" He's saying his son, Minilla, who was commonly associated with the more kid friendly aspects of the franchise, and is the main monster of the later mentioned abysmal All Monsters Attack movie (far worse than 98; at least 98 works as a monster movie) would be able to handle Kong easily.
Damn. Of everyone I was hoping you would catch the deeper meaning of the Oxygen Destroyer bar. On top of Kong claiming the score was 0-2 and referencing oxygen being 02, Godzilla has been defeated twice by the oxygen destroyers in his movies. Once when he straight up dies in the original Gojira and once again in the Monsterverse movie King of The Monsters where he was winning the fight against Ghidorah until humanity intervened with the Oxygen Destroyer bomb thus forcing him to retreat. Thus making him 0-2 against the Oxygen Destroyer.
Regarding the Nintendo lawsuit, Nintendo actually completely embarrassed Universal in court, to the extent that Universal had to pay their legal fees. Also, fun fact, the lawyer who won that case was named Jack Kirby, and Nintendo named the character after him.
Close, his name was *John* Kirby. Jack Kirby was an illustrator who help co-create the Fantastic Four and a bunch of other comic characters for Marvel and DC. 😅
King Kong does climb up the Empire State Building in the 1930s original and the 2000s Peter Jackson film. However in the 1970s version, Kong climbs up the WTC back when it was new building, two of them.
Godzilla 2014 and Kong: Skull Island was actually really close box office wise KotM 2019 was up against 2 movie that made billions of dollars, Avengers Endgame and the Aladdin remake, plus detective Pikachu for families, and GVK only made 100k more, both still under 2014 and skull Island
You should totally check out the British musical comedy duo, the Brett Domino Trio, They've appeared on a few british panel shows most notably 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. The three songs I recommend from them are Lunchtime lover, Bin Guy and I Think I'm in Love with the Girl Who Works on Checkout Six in Decathlon.
the minilla bar might be a misspelled reference to the old cartoon manilla gorilla, but I also remember hearing that he had a kid, so that might be the reference too.
Yes, I know, I misspoke, because I said Zilla was ToHo right after that. You know you scrolled past a pinned post that already said this to type this, right?
And in the comics, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have an incestuous relationship.... so yeah..... makes them playing husband and wife awkward again... XD
Ian, you being a comedian and actor yourself, do you think theirs merit to the following: According to ERB Rap Meanings (a wiki i think freely can be added to, not creators themselves) they claim the line in Godzilla third verse: ´ I´m bigger than bridges´references Jeff Bridges who appeared in 1976 remake and though commercially succesful received till this day mixed reviews. So Godzilla is bigger than THE Bridges? Is Godzilla more an icon than even the famous actor any way? No one seems to pick up at that potential reference so far, so i´m curious at your take on it.
That makes a lot of sense to me, yeah. Like I say in this reaction, that's the only version I hadn't seen, so I forgot Jeff Bridges was even in it, but that's def the kind of reference ERB would make.
The dunked on you like Barkley line was about the 1962 king kong vs godzilla. Kong was supposed to fight Frankenstein, but they couldnt get the rights. Kong beat godzilla in that movie
It wasn't my favorite ERB either, but I'm not in the target audience. I've never actually watched *any* of either Kong or Godzilla's movies. I know most of the stories and such, just never gotten around to watching one.
The thing that kind of bothers me not only about this rap battle but others in general, I'm not really a fan of stop-and-jerk disruptions of 'flow'. When they have to abruptly change verbal speed or musical speed in relation to the opposite, or when in order to make a 'rhyme' they have to insert one syllable too many to make it work, it is jarring to me and my mind can't help but focus on that hiccup rather than just enjoying the rap. Yes it's always good to have hard-hitting bar burns, but if trying to do that makes everything sound out-of-sync, it doesn't work so well for me. But I will agree that Kong managed to pull a slim win in this case.
So many people miss this, but "Oxygen destroyer" was the name of the weapon used to kill godzilla in his first movie. Also, "ill chew you up dawg" is a reference to Kong, a brand of chew toys for dogs. "Rabbit fur Flambé" - The stop motion doll they used for the first king kong movie was made using rabbit fur 32:19 - Also, they were a brother-sister incestous couple in the comics, so i guess its just accurate to marvel XD
They were only am incestuous couple in the Ultimate series, not the main 616 universe...because Mark Millar is forever an edgelord and wanted to make the Ultimate universe controversial. That's not main cannon for the characters.
