This early success with the Comparator Mirror has now led to a global art experiment in partnership with Tim Jenison called PAINTING LAB. Please feel free to check out our new content / @paintinglabofficial

Great video! As our friend Leonardo da Vinci says on the subject: “When you wish to see whether the general effect of your picture corresponds with that of the object represented after nature, take a mirror and set it so that it reflects the actual things, and then compare the reflection with your picture, and consider carefully whether the subject of the two images is in conformity with both, studying especially the mirror. The mirror ought to be taken as a guide - that is; the flat mirror - for within its surface substances have many points of resemblance to a picture; namely that you see the picture made upon one plane showing things which appear in relief, and the mirror upon one plane does the same, the picture is one single surface, and the mirror is the same.” (quoted in Goldberg, 1985, p. 152) (From Gorman)

Now that's a helpful comment... Thanks SS. If you like this have a look at my two part doc 'the power of paint' which brings this work bang up to date.

@@paintinglabofficial Thanks, I checked it out; very good stuff indeed. And I just finished my first comparator mirror portrait. Given the history, and how the skill of the great masters was apparently in composing powerful, moving scenes with collages of these 30cm projections, I feel like the question for young students might be, "Are you okay with only learning to paint as well as Caravaggio, Ingres, or Vermeer?" If the answer is "Yes", the comparator mirror could be perfect for them.

Love the questions you ask! And will be following your search on them. Been seeking out a way to bring my hand back into my art practice(these days I help others with their artwork, working in a gallery) and may do this to get that pep I need again. I struggle with depression and sounds cliche but art helped me "zone out", but still do something with a wonderful outcome. So many things I would like to talk to you about on the subject of art therapy and the art of observation...I can go on. Lol Anyways thanks!

I set up the 45 degrees mirror after watching Tim’s Vermeer. I found out it’s better to have a mirror where the reflecting surface is on top rather than protected behind glass (as in a conventional mirror). It’s called a “first surface mirror”. I bought it from an optics company so it was a little expensive. Trying to build something stable to keep everything in place was a project in itself. I designed and 3D printed an object to hold the mirror at 45 degrees and with slots to mount it on a ruler and then taped the ruler to a square kitchen utensil holder (haha), taped that to two pieces of foam-core boards that are and 90 degrees thanks to a box, etc. If/when I rebuild that, I am thinking of using Erector Set (aka Meccano) to make it more stable, portable, etc. However, the reason I found this video is I am trying to figure out the specifications of the lens and curved mirror Tim used to paint from real world (rather than a flat image which must be the same size and distance but mirrored as in the version which only uses 1 flat mirror).

Hello Donald, we are happy to say that we are giving away a kit to enable everyone to build a basic comparator mirror setup. As for your other questions please feel free to email us at contact@paintinglab.com

I also replied to my own comment here with an answer but that comment is missing. Probably auto-deleted because it had a link. I found details about the optics for the full setup with a lens and concave mirror used in Tim’s Vermeer in a paper called “Did Tim paint a Vermeer?” by Stork, Tyler, and Schechner but I think even those specs for focal length and so on probably are for the size of painting he wanted to do (big) so I’m thinking of learning more optics to see if I can go smaller. The paper did point out that you only get like a 3 degree view (with Tim’s big setup, not the mirror you’re talking about here, which is great) and so it’s very tricky to have to keep adjusting it. (To be clear: That’s not a problem with the comparator this video is talking about.) So after looking into that and rewatching your video, I think the idea of using the comparator as is (one mirror) to learn HOW to paint with close comparison (even if the source image is flat) is still a great idea as-is. Going to check out the rest of your channel. Glad to see someone else so interested in these concepts.

@@drivers99 ok Donald. Tim and Tomas have been close collaborators for 8 years but there is a lot of detail in what you are asking. If you would like to email us we would be happy to help.

Sir I want to know how do you manage the difference of size between the canvas and the reference photo if this technique is used ...?
@paintinglabofficial
@paintinglabofficial 5 лет назад
Hi anishul. I'm not quite sure of your question exactly but to give you the broad strokes the painting will be the same size as the source photo if the mirror is equal distance between your source plain and painting plain. If you have a look at the essay linked below this video you will see the basic setup to help you further. Hope that helps. Tomas

What is your email? I have been developing a drawing technique that is different, but in the same ballpark as jennisons. It can quickly help you match lines, shape, and tone, and I can do a photo realistic portrait in a few hours. Its not great for colors so I have been starting to figure out how to incorporate the comparative mirror to help match color!
@murrdy

imgur.com/gallery/2sCd8Y7 Figure I'd post a link to a few pictures I've done with the technique, like with jennisons technique, you really just need to learn the basics of the technique to get results like this
