Thoughts on the EP5?

The placement is alright for me. The camera body is quite small so you have to re-adjust your expectations with that in mind. It certainly doesn't feel as practical as the front dial on a Canon or a Nikon but this isn't one of those cameras, it's an Olympus PEN.

My E-P5 is my most used camera as well. It coincided with a particularly prolific period in my photography.

I didn’t even know it was out, thanks for letting me know. I’ve been so taken up with life and other projects. I’ll add it to my wishlist, but I can’t promise a specific date for a video.

In my opinion, there are four phases to the Olympus colors: (1) the CCD phase, where the E-1 is the best example, (2) the beginner CMOS phase, where the E-2 shows the limitations of CMOS but it does yield some interesting colors at times, (3) the intermediate CMOS phase, where you see cameras such as the E-P1, E-P2, E-P3 and E-P5, where the colors are clear and punchy but low light is an issue, plus the others that came out during that period, and (4) the advanced CMOS phase, where they've perfected the CMOS color science, and you have cameras such as the E-M1 Mark III and the E-M1X. Take your pick and explore the colors, a lot of these cameras are quite affordable second-hand.

I also have an E-PL1 and it's a great camera, provided you use it for what it was intended, which is travel and outdoor photography. If used on a tripod, it can also do low light photography, but that's not necessarily its intended use. It was made to be a very light, very portable travel and nature photography camera that you could carry virtually everywhere. It was not intended to be used as a handheld, low light camera. If you want one of those cameras, they cost upwards of $2000-3000 and they need to be paired with similarly expensive lenses of f1.4, f1.2 or f1.0 or f0.95 maximum apertures. Although I have to say the newer E-M1 cameras such as the Mark II, Mark III and the E-M1X do spectacularly well handheld in low light given the size of the sensor. Still, you have to pair them with the f1.8 or f1.2 lenses in order to get the proper results.

@@RaoulPop I have a Canon 6d with an L-series lens, and the low light capabilities are amazing. But then of course, it's a full frame camera, the body alone was $500, but well worth it. But I hardly use it due to its size, whereas I can take the Olympus everywhere. So it's a tradeoff I suppose.

The epl8 is a lot better than the rx100 mIII. I have both of them.

It hasn't failed on any of my PENs. It is a pity that it failed on yours. Can you send it somewhere to get it fixed, or maybe find the IS mechanism for sale somewhere as a spare part, and tinker with it yourself?

@@RaoulPop Thanks for you reply. I must admit, I’ve only seen the failing IS on the EP-1. On quite a few RU-vid channels where people cover the first Pen, the flashing red IS symbol is present; perhaps without people realising the significance. I know it is apparent on Mattias Burling’s video on the camera. Despite the prices beginning to rise a little, it still seems it’s not possible to get it repaired; not anywhere near relative to the value of the camera. I use it in good light with fast primes generally, so it’s not a major issue. Not had any issue with the IS on my Em series cameras, though. Thanks again.

I was wrong in my initial comment here. I remembered sending in my E-P5 for service back in 2019 and after looking up the service form, I see that I listed IBIS as one of the issues. It was still moving the sensor but it wasn't functioning properly. There were a couple of other small issues that were also addressed, so I forgot about the IBIS. This happened around the 50K mark on the frames shot with the camera, so perhaps that was the reason.

@@RaoulPop Thankyou. It might be worth me checking the shutter count on mine; if it’s really high, it could be the answer. Maybe the more modern IS systems are designed to match the shutter life. Never had any issues with my EM-1 mkii and I’m sure that will have a high count.

@@deanrobertnoble138 Yup, the newer cameras are designed for approx. 250K shutter actuations and one of the new models goes even higher than that. I can’t recall if it’s the E-M1X or the OM-1.

I don't own any of those. I always liked the full-featured PEN cameras. I do have an E-PL1, but I didn't buy any of the later E-PL models. It's a great little camera though.

It’s not the e-pl5, it’s the e-p5. Big difference in features and design. None of the pen cameras had built in viewfinders except the pen-f. What you see on the e-p5 is an add-on viewfinder, the vf-2. The vf-1 and the vf-4 were also available.

@@RaoulPop Mr. Pop, I think he's referring to the poor audio quality. I had to abandon your most interesting video because of the muffled sound and low volume. What a pity.

@@subrotomukerji2608 I can't please everyone. I make these videos out of my own interest and I use whatever equipment I have available to me. Sometimes microphones break down as I'm recording a video and I have to rely on backup audio. Just FYI, this video has made me $6.50 since I've published it. When that amount gets to some decent number that can cover the cost of some proper wireless mics, I'll do it. Until then, WYSIWIG.
