When beginning your own lens collection, a 28mm should be high up on your priority list. It works extraordinarily well as a wide-angle for full frame shooters and makes a close 50mm equivalent on a micro four thirds sensor. These lenses are typically a little more expensive than many of our 50mm options, but are generally less expensive than wider focal lengths like the popular 24mm and even wider fish eye lenses. With plenty to choose from, it helps to pair several against each other and determine which you prefer.

My favorite 28mm lens for astrophotography is the 28mm F2.0 ais Nikkor. Good wide open and the stars are sharp pinpoints not blobs caused by chromatic dispersion.

The Zeiss 28/2 Distagon is also the killer choice for F mount. Nothing else comes close.

The Canon FDn 28mm 2.0 performs much better than the 28mm 2.8

Try Olympus 28mm f2.8 it is superior to Canon FD f2.8. Also better still modern day Kamlan 28mm f1.4(manual only for e-mount and others) for APSC camera, it is superior to these 2 lenses yet the price is low for a modern lens.

OMG, "creamy overall look" = low contrast and washed out. To each their own, but seriously? Talking about short comings as if they are assets is poor, poor reviewing.

low contrast and washed out for video shooters sound like an ideal base to grade with. definitely sounds like an asset to me from the perspective the reviews done from.

HA! Got your message on the original post of this. Yes, the Minolta Celtic 28mm is pretty nice. I got very lucky getting it at an insane pittance on ebay. Worth looking for if you get a decent copy at a decent price. Very similar in look and feel to the Canon FD. I have a Mir-1V 37mm on order from the Ukraine and am now looking at the Takumar 55mm f2. I think I need to get into a 12 step program. Have you reviewed the Mir and the Takumar?

I haven't worked with Mir and takumar lenses enough to give my opinion on them but remember they were really fun to work with. Are those hard to find in good shape?

The leica was one of the worst looking lenses and cost more than 10X the other options. Stop drinking the kool aid and call it like it is.

The "T*" on the Zeiss is not pronounced "T asterix", it's actually pronounced "T Star", which is the name of Zeiss's proprietary lens coating.

Hello, Matt. Sorry, but I'll never understand why you test full frame lenses on this Lumix GH4 camera: 4/3 sensor. Please do the test of al full frame lens on a full frame camera. Now you are testing only a central frame of the lens. No sense.

I'd say that's a pretty good get. That same lens is selling on eBay U.S. for about $40 and up (appx. 30 euros). If it works for you, then that's an awesome deal! I'd be interested to see how it looks.

Good work, it is always best with comparisons so you can tell the difference. There are a lot to say about well known brands and the third part manufacturers. The Focal is usually hit and miss, but there are others that actually can surprise. One slight detail; you know about lenses and their makers and the quality of lenses like "bokeh" but that is a Japanese word for out of focus quality and it would sound a lot more professional if you pronounce it as it is pronounced by the Japanese (and it's not "bowka"), please listen to the gentlemen in the end of the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y0Brf2l8Ysc.html

*Knocks the Zeiss Distagon for it's price* *Fails to mention that the Elmarit costs almost $1,000 more*
@mattpaulrice
@mattpaulrice 6 лет назад
I'm referring to the Leica Elmarit-R 28mm in this video which must be bought used and can be usually had for well under $1,000. The Leica Elmarit-M 28mm is what I believe you are referring to which when bought new is at a much higher price tag then the Zeiss Distagon 28mm. I see the confusion which makes lens buying such a minefield. The only difference between the labeling of these two lenses is the letter 'R' and 'M'. Leica-R's may be a bit older but they are extremely powerful lenses. Hopefully that clears things up, but here's a list of used Leica-R 28mm lenses that are not as expensive as you are fearing: bit.ly/ebayus-elmarit28mm

While I would not dispute the conclusions drawn here for video work on tiny sensor cameras, comparing this lens array while shooting stills on a full frame Sony mirrorless body will render different results. My experience with these lenses differs primarily in that my 28mm Elmarit is an M mount lens rather than the R version reviewed here. My conclusions: 1) Focal=Sigma=Vivitar series 1=Tamron=Pro master=icky poo.......... 2) FDn, just fair. The earlier SC breech mount FD is well built and performs better. 3) Zeiss Distagon, better but clearly not as good as the modern Canon EF lens. I can hear your dissent already, but this conclusion is based on limited, but clearly revealing direct comparison of these two lenses tripod mounted on a 36MPX Sony A7R. While the EF is not spectacular, it is consistent with no substantive weaknesses. The Zeiss lens displayed all manner of annoying aberrations at widest apertures, and clearly could not produce files of the same quality as the EF lens. 4) Leitz 28mm Elmarit M could not match the EF lens either. Though sharp, the overall image quality suffers, and the corners turn dull and have a distinct purple tinge. This is a different lens design from the SLR version reviewed in this video. Bottom line, though by no means perfect, the 28mm f2.8 EF lens easily outperforms all of these other contenders on a high resolution full frame Sony body when shooting carefully composed/focused tripod mounted stills. But go ahead and dump a boatload into overpriced Kraut glass if you must. Just please don’t delude yourself into believing the hype of German superiority. Many Zeiss lenses are superb. This just isn’t one of them...
