I like how there's two types of closures for this. A heartfelt message that basically boils down to "see you on the other side!", And a completely abrupt slap of static across the face.

@@_Sur22_ but also, radio waves travel at light speed. You would have to be nearly 46,000 miles away from the broadcast station for there to be a quarter second delay. (Speed of light is approximately 186,000 MP/s or 299,792 km/s). Obviously, that is unrealistic as most antennas were inefficient at picking up signals more than 70 miles away (inverse square law). So in reality, yes, the cutout would be instantaneous; however, the only way you would be able to perceive it is if you were in two places at once because all digital broadcasts have a delay due to latency in the sending and receiving systems.

Me too! Have you seen how Northern Ireland did it? There, BBC One Northern Ireland and UTV (seemingly the last two analog channels left at the time, and the two biggest channels in the region) simulcast a special for the last hour before switchover, which celebrated the history of Northern Irish TV. This special was called "The Magic Box" and as of recently it can be found on RU-vid. BBC One NI also pulled out some old branding in the couple of hours before that, with the channel's segue into the 10PM news using the clock from the 90s "balloons" branding (also the first time a clock ident had beev used at all ever _since_ the 90s), and then the continuity into Magic Box was done against their 80s CGI globe animation.

It would still work with digital, the delay would be applied to every part of the transmission including the shut off
@DrKoneko
@DrKoneko Год назад
@@ashegrey2321 no with digital broadcasts when the video signal is sent out it takes a second to become visible due to decoding but when the signal shuts off the picture is lost. Meaning that there would be a little bit of time lost. You can try this by going to a live stream on RU-vid. Watch when the broadcast ends versus when the video uploaded afterwards ends. For example: if a RU-vid stream has the following dialogue "I am a little bit more concerned with the state of the world than I was last week" then the stream might involve the sentence "I am a little bit more concerned with the state of the world" and the rest would not be viewable. The video uploaded afterwards however would have the full sentence since it's a recording and not a live broadcast. Theoretically the signal could be entire broadcasted but you'd have to be very lucky and have a great reception.

as someone who's british, the way that americans send channels off air by the press of a button is a lot simpler and quicker than the way we turner channels off. the two videos i could find were in northern ireland, where two u-link connectors were disconnected from a panel, and one where a series of buttons and switches were pressed and flipped, therefore "multiple points of isolation". i did see one news report from the bbc where it took simply a flip of a switch to turn a channel off, although the switchoff wasn't actually being shown

@CZghost

Am I the only one who thinks that the analog was way more robust to weaker signal than digital? Even if you have slightly weaker signal, the analog is still quite watchable. Digital is way less forgiving and if the signal drops under a certain threshold (somewhere like 60-70%), the picture starts dropping frames, starts to corrupt (pixelation, error chunks) and sound starts to corrupt (error chunks). The weaker the signal, the worse the condition gets, and around 50% the signal is lost completely. Analog is watchable down to 40%, and around 30% you still get some picture.

A lot of people find this video sad, but honestly this made my day. I was born in the early 90s, it's been such an incredible experience growing up in a 1st world country with technology advancing around me so rapidly. Seeing broadcasted TV, VHS tapes, and CDs evolving into most media being stored/accessed online or on SSDs. Using dial up internet with telephone wires as a child and now being able to access it instantly anywhere with a pocket-sized touchscreen computer (something made possible by the shutdown of analog TV broadcasts making room for the signals). Sure some things have gotten worse, but some things have gotten better as well. When I was born we wouldn't have been able to watch this historical moment at the touch of a button, with the ability to talk about it with all of you guys from around the world. The nostalgia from this video made me teary eyed, a combination of missing my childhood and thinking about all the positive effects of how shockingly advanced humanity is becoming. You shouldn't be sad and yearn for the obsolete past, you should be excited and look forward to the amazing things we're going to be able to do in the future.

I'm 32 but i grew up on a third world country, so i experienced most of those tech. Black and white tv, color, now digital. The allmighty nokia 1100 being my first phone. Mp3 players, discmans. (I know walkmans were a thing, but i had none) I even remember when i tried to copy games on diskettes without understanding the max space limit was 1,2 mb. I remember the tv signals turning off every day, then turning back the next day, later at night they had those cheesy but fun excel tutorials. It was a thing. My dad is a bit too nostalgic with some things as he didn't had lights until his late 20's so he bought some kerosene lamps for decoration, but sometimes we use them when light goes off. It’s so strange and sad to think about that all that hard ware and electronics and radio tower, after running and transmissions for so many decades, one day just stops working. Soon as you heard that click, that’s the sound of it dying. All those racks and racks of radio equipment talking to us and entering us for decades one day just stops, no sound of it’s hum, no lights flashing, and no longer able to speak. It reminds me of a final transmission from an astronaut as he is lost in space, floating away to never be head from again. It’s a sad end of an era. Even if digital is better, it would still be nice to be able to turn on an old analog tv for the nostalgia

6:53 I just love the one of WDEF12. Especially with David getting back for those few seconds, that weird quote, and then poof, gone.

6:50 imagine watching the one on left after the heartwarming sign-off, you get up out of your lazy chair, both teary eyed and weary as the hour grows late. You turn toward the bedroom to drift off to sleep then all of a sudden… ”l know where you live, biyeeeoootch!”…. hard cut to static.

2:08 - The following is a big middle finger to those who didn't switch to digital, we hope you enjoy static white snow as the next paid program. Jokes aside, nice work in putting everyone's video all together with the usernames on the corners, as well as compiling some of the local affiliate stations in one video!

Nice to see you here. You were the inspiration and catalyst for why I made these POV videos in the first place, so I thank you for that and for watching the video.

@@Colorbar74 That really puts a smile on my face, I was 16 at the time when I made the first video on that series and I'm glad it inspired someone else to make these sorts of videos. It's always great to see other people in the community make more of them possibly expand on it further!

i absolutely love that the very last thing that aired on analogue WDEF News 12 was "I know where you live, biaaaatch!" after such a lovely, bittersweet, heartfelt sendoff. if that wasn't intentional, that was some incredible comedic timing!

8:27 I would probably get as scared as crap when a black circle on a white screen suddenly interrupts my regular programming and a woman just says “The switch to digital is happening now!” And silence followed by a goodbye message, which abruptly cuts to static.

7:05 The image on the left is what MOST people saw when trying to watch analog TV over the air, and the main reason people got cable, not just to have more channels. Even with cable, the switch wasn't flawless, several channels stopped working for a while while they sorted out the mess, between channels that were ready, and those that were not. I still have a couple of those converter boxes around here somewhere.

Cable was supposed to be an advertisement free pay alternative to antenna. Unfortunately it became nothing but advertisements and you paid for the privilege of watching them

CBS 3/KYW TV's analog shutdown is really the scariest. It starts with an announcer saying that the analog shutdown is happening now, followed by a long, LONG silence. And then, a screen with the CBS logo with the word Goodbye below the logo pops up. And after that, the snow came in, and the analog shutdown is complete.
