I'm using grass for my grass plants, they love it. Keeps moisture in. I water much less now. It also adds in good nutrients. Grass clippings provide several benefits to potted plants. First, they act as a natural mulch, helping to retain moisture in the soil and prevent weed growth. The clippings gradually decompose, releasing essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into the soil, which are crucial for plant growth.

It was great to see exactly how much grass clippings you use around your plants. I used them waaay too thick on my garlic bed in the fall thinking I was protecting the garlic from our harsh winter but in the spring none of the garlic came up, I had suffocated them and they all rotted. Lesson learned. Now I use my grass clippings sparingly around my plants and really thick on my pathways, works like a charm.

Well, learned a lot of things I didn't know before! Now I know that wood chips mixed in with soil will use up the nitrogen, which is needed for the health of our vegetable plants. I love to learn the how and why of things, so this lesson is great! Glad you got specific about how to use the grass clippings - and that when grass breaks down it adds nitrogen. Great video! Thank you!

Thanks so much. Nitrogen is used a lot by bacteria for decomposition. One of the main reason it is needed to heat up compost piles.

Great video. We have been doing this for many many years. We prepare our beds as soon as its not freezing outside and we start putting down grass clippings as soon as the grass needs to be mowed. We end up with a nice thick layer by the time the plants go in but continue to add as the season goes on. Amazing how it turns into a solid mat, anything weeds that come up are usually in the mat and pull right out.

Gary, Always appreciate you and your teaching us your methods and principles. I’ve benefitted in my containers with mulching and, FYI to readers, many of the benefits discussed here in this video are in Gary’s book, pg 103. You’ve taught me to experiment so that I hone learned techniques to directly benefit me in my climate with my soil and my sun conditions which are down South of MD in the Carolinas. My free resource for mulch has been Pine Needles, and I now understand the Nitrogen benefit of adding the loose inch of my grass clippings, thank you. One curiosity I have about mulch benefits and to date haven’t heard you or others speak to this, we know sun benefits our garden plants but I wonder if sun exposure (UV) negatively impacts soils if left exposed too long. I recognize and to your point, I’m managing mulch around direct sow infant seedlings. But once I have a hearty plant start, I’ve convinced myself, without experimenting that UV rays can damage the top inch or so of soil, and to protect soil from the UVs I can shield that top healthy soil layer by mulching, another benefit, perhaps. I confident Mother Nature repairs this but I’m convinced in the short term of managing my annuals, I need to provide my soil a mulch Sun Screen. Appreciate thoughts and comments.

I have found drying out the grass for a couple days in metal trash cans which get really hot throughout the day, help dry out the grass relativey quickly before applying to the garden, when the grass has lost its lively green color. This helps decrease the nitrogen drain on the soil. Optionally, I also use shredded mail/paper, under the dryed grass clippings as this helps draw worms from deep in the ground, but use thin layers of paper ( browns) mulch as not to create over heating of the browns and greens (grass) interacting. I love your vids Gary !

I noticed you mulched right up to the plant stems. I have always thought you needed to keep mulch (mainly wood chips or straw) off of the stems because it can cause rot. I have mostly used wood chips, straw or bagged compost and I have just set up my beds with inline drip tubing so I will only be watering directly when I put in seeds or transplants ( Inland SoCal zone 9B). I don't have very much for grass clippings around here, we live in a rural area and have to haul our water so I've been using shredded paper in my garden for mulch, it keeps the moisture in and gets worked into the garden in the fall. Should I be fertilizing with a nitrogen fertilizer since I don't have the grass clippings?

Thanks for the video. A typical garden will have both grass and weeds so when you mow the grass, you will end up with both grass and weed clippings. Some of these could be perennial weed clippings. Can these be used in the compost or as a mulch? If not how do you differentiate and separate perennial weed clippings from grass clippings?

This is my second year with my small raised bed and container garden. I think I have some herbicide damage due to some rabbit manure I bought and put in the planting holes of all my seedlings. Maybe the hay mixed with their bedding or if they ate some treated hay or grass. Nothing else new has been introduced into the garden this season. Is all lost for my plants? Or is there possibility they will recover? My peppers are affected most, so far. Leaves deformed and plants stunted. Hasn't affected tomatoes yet. Wonder if will get bad when the roots go down and find that manure. It is very disheartening.

I find with an in-ground garden the seed content doesn't really matter. They are invading anyway haha. I'm starting to leave unfinished compost leftovers on the boundaries to snuff out invaders. When mulching around trees, the guidance is usually to keep the mulch a couple of inches away from the trunk of the tree. I think this is to prevent premature rot of the trunk. Would you give the same guidance when using grass clippings or other mulches around the main stem of our vegetable plants?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 года назад
Some plants grow roots from stem. So it would vary. I dont pile it up on the stems but it does touch. An inch from stem is a fair rule of thumb. But grass, not over piled, dries fast and flattens. This may be a silly garden newbie question, so forgive me... but can I use grass as a mulch in flower beds too? I've inherited a garden that once had a very keen gardener, but it is now totally overgrown. As I clear out spaces, I have large areas where all the flowers have long since died. Will grass work the same for these areas until I can afford to get more plants in them? The weeds take over so quickly with bare soil.
