In this live session, I'll be taking a comprehensive look at low light photography. What are the factors and skills that go into it, etc. Please ask questions! I plan on making a filmed version of this information based off of them. Here's a general outline of the discussion:
Low light photography 101
INTRO
A comprehensive look at low lighting
The perspective of an event photographer - in other words, this won’t be specific to something like night photography on a tripod
Discussion on hard factors vs soft (skills etc)
Camera limitations
ISO performance
Ability to focus
Focus point considerations
Maximum aperture of the lens impacts this
IBIS
Lens limitations
(mostly) Maximum aperture
IS
Longer focal lengths = more camera shake = you cant shoot with as slow shutter speeds
Variable apertures
I want to make this clear: you DO NOT NEED a 1.2 lens. For most, they’re prohibitively expensive. Yes I went well over a decade of doing this successfully and producing excellent work in low light without one.
Personal skills / limitations
How to hold your camera
RAW VS JPEG
Shoot in raw to allow for the most adjjustments (data)
NOISE reduction
Jpegs apply it already - sometimes a bit heavy handed
Lightroom options
When and why to use flash
Protocols
Pushing limits and the order in which I'd do so
When to use flash and why
Need
Choice
Quality (of light)
Miscellaneous Questions I can answer
Can you use a continuous light?
Philosophical etc.
Lighting for correct vs lighting for what it was like to be there.
What is technical perfection, really.

Couldn't catch this live as I was boarding a plane, but I'm excited to watch! I've actually been experimenting a fair bit recently with my flash technique and I think I've improved pretty significantly in recent weeks, although I'm not super consistent yet. Hopefully will pick up a few things after watching this! Thanks as always Mik, and have a great day!

SUPER COOL TIPS! I shoot a lot of indoor photography, and I have no problem jumping up the ISO on my Nikon and the 24-70mm lens! Keep up the great work, and consider adding a little MOOD MUSIC to your videos! LOL Seriously, you are appreciated! HG-Chicago, IL

Good stuff, Mik! Regarding the higher megapixel-higher noise issue: I can tell a definite difference between the z6 (24 MP) and the z7 (45 MP), specifically in color noise at higher ISOs. The z7 files are still very usable, but I actually have to do a little color noise reduction on some of the high-ISO files of the z7, where I a lot of times I don't need to touch the noise reduction controls in LR for the z6. Both are using modern backside-illuminated sensors. On a similar note, even though it can't handle high ISO like the morn modern sensors can, my old D700 (12 MP) will have noise at higher ISOs, but it really is a pleasant look, and doesn't bother me at all. Anyway, just wanted to add those points to the noise discussion. Thanks for a great video on dealing with low-light photography, which is something that is a regular occurrence at events!

For the holster, You've got to check out the BlackRapid. I'm using the singleshoulder strap which can be outfitted with double camera's and they're just awesome.

Mik do you recommend using a flash or a LED light for on the go low light shooting? I seen people having a small 30 centimeter umbrella on their Speedlite as a light. I been only using ambient light so far. And sometimes the ISO goes up to like 20.000 I haven't figured out how to limit that yet but its obvious in some situations there is not enough ambient lighting. Oh I need to mention this is for on the go shooting of groups of fashion models so I can't put my f stop too low or their clothes and the other models will be blurry, you shoot multiple people at 1.4?

I have a Canon R3 and can Canon R5 I shoot live concerts flash is not a option I have the RF 50 1.2 and 85 1.2 but I usually use the RF 28-70 2.0 I struggle with shutter speed and iso just can’t seem to find my zone wondering what’s the best shutter speed for low light fast moving concerts?

Hi Mik - question per fast lenses at events. Typically I’m photographing groups so how does a super fast lens actually help in those situations? Do you shoot shallow depth of field in low light even though your whole group won’t be sharp? Thank you so much!

Well, depending on the focal length of your lens, you can shoot at much faster apertures than you may think if you get people well aligned. But mostly I use a fast lens for candies and if I do some standard roaming and capturing of group shots I use something like a 17-40 f4 and a flash.

Thank you! Also, do you in-camera color balance to incandescent and gel your flash w a CTO? Or, do you just underexpose the ambient and flash ungelled?

I have just started with flash to fill some of the bad shadows at events and I generally try expose for ambient then flash bounce at EV -1.0
