Hilary Tompkins is a partner at Washington, D.C. law firm Hogan Lovells. Her practice focuses on public lands, natural resources and Native American affairs, with emphasis on environmental, energy and natural resources matters in addition to litigation, product compliance and corporate due diligence.
Before coming to Hogan Lovells, Tompkins was appointed by former President Barak Obama as solicitor of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). She is the first Native American to hold this position, which she has held for more than seven years.
Before serving as DOI Solicitor, Tompkins was counsel to New Mexico’s governor, acting as his chief legal adviser. She also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of New York. She began her legal career as an honors program trial attorney in the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where she handled civil prosecutions in environmental cases nationwide. Tompkins is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation.
