I may be the 3rd person that liked Malcolm. I was a young gay man ...maybe 20 years old... when I saw it and it meant the wold to me at the time. Want to thank Mr. Albee for that !
I never had the good fortune to see the play although I wanted to very much -- James Purdy being a favorite author of mine. I stumbled into his books when I was a young gay man in my early 20's. In my 40's I met Albee (the first time over dinner at a friend's house) and had many wonderful conversations with him about the theater in general and, of course, his plays. One night in New York he actually took me out to dinner. It was a spur of the moment thing having bumped into him in the Strand bookstore -- "Didn't I meet you last year at Gene's house in DC? Want to go get something to eat and talk some more?" I suppose it helped that I was holding a copy of "Virginia Wolf" at the time (which he later offered to sign for me). We had dinner -- he didn't make a pass at me. After that I saw him maybe 20 times over the years (mostly at mutual friends functions). He mailed me a copy of Malcolm with a note asking me if I liked it as much as I liked Purdy's writing. I did. Unfortunately I no longer have either of the autographed plays -- I believe my ex walked off with them.
