+Celeste Cormier Yes, that is true. Just like a small child, she didn't want to get in trouble so she blamed the kitten. But a small child doesn't realize that the adult would know that chances are it wasn't really the kitten who did it. They just don't want to get in trouble with authority.
Can't find anything on Penny. Is she ok? Devastated I'm sure. Did anyone sense this coming? Would really love to hear how she's doing. Wow, she spent like 46 years with KoKo.
Just imagine what Koko would been achieved had she started her learning earlier, not from the age of one, but from the day she was born, like human offspring. For sure her IQ would been raised significantly!
It's not about physical power beacause even between people it's not equal .Their relationship was so unique and I think it's clear that she has raised in way to understand how she can communicate with her and also where her limits end
I think they could have done so much more with Koko. I just don't understand why they didn't?? This lady knew how smart Koko was.......why didn't she ask her some really important questions?? If she had taught Koko some basic words of love, caring, empathy, etc. Koko could have told this lady sooo much. It can still be done......seems NO one wants to do it!!!
Not so sure about that. She may have raised several kids from numerous anonymous fathers and spent the rest of her days on welfare... and her great-great-grandchildren would incessantly bitch about her having been raised in a zoo and having been taught how to write. This sort of thing happened before, you know... would have been best, if old Koko would have been sent home and forget about her....
My heart and soul go out to Penny for taking the upmost care of what I could say possibly one of the most fascinating and intelligent creatures of all time. Rest in peace Koko and god bless you so much x
It's quite severe that people still believe this. It's pretty and wholesome but unscientific. I don't doubt the fact that Koko and Penny had a lovely relationship but no, the gorilla did not talk and it is not possible to teach a gorilla human language. There are several essays and papers on this. So please, for the love of science, don't be fooled
yea unfortunately they are huge frauds, who were just taking advantage of the media. no scientific organization has ever backed up their claims about koko, bc they all knew how fraudulant it was
There are multiple scenes where Koko follows detailed instructions, and associates strings of words with specific actions; you cannot get those effects from a creature who doesn't have any idea of the meaning of words. Some people just think that it is cool and hip to doubt Koko's ability to understand the meaning of words, because they feel that this makes them stick out; there are always people like that who are like "well ACKSHU4LLY, it did NOT happen" whenever someone amazing happens.
@@Peter_1986It's just unscientific. There are several papers that disprove this "understanding". I don't doubt that she wasn't mindless during it all, she definitely caught on something here and there. But the results are exaggerated. If you don't want to look into the papers, just look up "koko gorilla debunked" here on youtube, you'll find a lot of content that covers the topic. The story is actually sadder than you might expect, leaning into animal abuse. Amazing things happen all the time, I don't mean to dismiss them, but believing that this is all true, that she understood language, is delusional. You can't take a presumed fact as factual simply because it's pretty. If you want to be amazed while looking at scientifically-accurate data, look into communication of animals that is innate to the species, not that was pushed by one species (homo spaiens) onto another. Octopuses, bees, whales, crows, ants and even actual primates are all fascinating in this regard
Ghostdoctor Nah. I'm Christian I don't understand why anyone would dislike this. It's amazing to see Koko evolve. Hopefully we'll soon learn to communicate with all animals.
Animals are so much better than people. So many people aren't worth the oxygen they breathe and are enough evidence to me that God is only for the deluded. Koko is wonderful.
yeah, well see what your saying when you get your leg eaten by a polar bear, and he just looks at you while he munches down your leg. you hear your own bones crunching under the powerful jaws of a polar bear, you see you own blood staining the face of the beast, then you finally pass out from blood loss, and then the bear decides to eat the rest of you.
I find amazing how smart animals can be, especially primates. Gorillas, Chimpanzees and others can understand human languages, sometimes more than one, and can learn signs to communicate with us. Those primates have common ancestors with humans, which makes me wonder what Homo Erectus, Neanderthal, Heidelberg and so on could be able to do. Imagine if modern humans could interact with extinct human species...
Anxo Fernandez no dude ... they have a commmen ancestor with you

Optimus27 your momis religious. If i say green and u hear red ut means ure anudiot not me u idiot. U have no idea what my words say. Ure the one believing in religious shit. IDIOTTT
When my brother and I were younger our Mom read us a book about Koko by her caregiver Francine Patterson. Her address was in the back of the book so my brother and I both wrote a fan letter and sent it. Less than a few weeks later Francine had wrote us both back a lovely letter on Koko's behalf. It was so sweet.
SunkissedObsidian Yeahh, unfortunately too many people take that idea seriously and so the rest of us do too. I'd say add zoo keeper to your list of dream jobs ;)
I saw Koko on instagram cause she want to save earth and that nature see everything. It was heartbreaking I want to do something to protect earth and nature.😭
The question is... can we teach gorillas not only ASL, but can we teach them to teach other gorillas to use ASL? Can we, effectively, engineer the introduction of a human language into populations of another species, thereby bridging the divide and the fundamental gap that exists between us?
Given enough time, sure. This proves it. However, humans are so used to thinking we are the center of everything and above and beyond other earthlings in every way that we've never been too open to it.
I remember when Penny and Koko were in an issue of National Geographic in the 70s. I was amazed by Koko speaking in sign language to Penny. RIP Koko and Michael her buddy.
Why do you need to mention that a low life comedian brought you here, does it add some sort of value to the comment section of this video? Course not, you just seek validity from other imbeciles that watch the same tripe as you.
Ever stop to think that maybe people like it when they can share common interests? You know, like the ENTIRE INTERNET? And maybe that "low life comedian" just got a bunch of people to educate themselves about this kind of thing. Ever think of that? Oh yeah, and they're just jokes, and maybe if you understood comedy you would see the intelligence in the nuances of well-delivered satire through what is essentially a character someone is playing on stage, and realize it's actually quite brilliant. You know, kind of like how a lot of people see "just an animal," but others know it can communicate with sign language...
***** The gorilla wasn't going to pummel the child... and just HOW do you know that exactly? There was a 50/50 chance the gorilla would kill the child and was violently thrashing him around before being shot. That's why they made the decision to kill the gorilla because it wasn't worth the life of a small child.
@No One check the stats on drone attacks before Obama and after Obama. The US military increased their used INSANELY under his rule, also most middle eastern people killed by drones were civilians which in turned were radicalized Giving Obama the Nobel Peace price is the epitome of idiocy
A chimpanzee at the last zoo that I went to was pointing at the glass and then pointing up above indicating that he wanted to get out and putting his hand up to mine. He got a stick and then started pointing upwards showing me the way out. It hurt my heart.
Koko isn't necessarily speaking sign language. She understands the vocabulary of very basic signs, however lacks grammar structure. The sentences she strings together are often vague. It would be many generations of selective breeding on gorillas before we could even come close to them actually answering that. The key differentiator between humans and other animals that can speak (be it Koko with sign language, or parrots with vocalizations) is that animals have never asked a question. There's only been one known case, and even then it hasn't repeated or been recorded on camera. Language is difficult for other animals simply because their brains aren't evolved to learn it, whereas we traded certain functions to be able to acquire language.
Koko's body language must have adjusted too. I read that to a gorilla, eye contact is threatening. But I suppose Koko has been around humans enough to where she nows that's not the case with us. I also wonder if the eye contact thing is a learned behavior, or instinct?
@@niku6610 That's incredible, imagine a small group of gorillas all able to speak sign language somewere in a jungle... Maybe in a few years, they could start a evolution like we did... Thank you for the Info Ni Ku 👍😊
Yes, what a wonderful story of friendship, Gods creation never ceases to amaze me! No offence to those who believe in it, but I don't see how a Big Bang could suddenly create something so intelligent and human like, so understanding and incredible. Clearly some thought was put into the design of every creature.
Duncan Dunky But then again comes the question, who or what made the creator, who or what designed the designer. And what ´thought´ did he/she/it put into the creation of viruses such as aids and STDs? I don´t try to be offensive, but I would be genuinely interested what your take on such questions is?
Clearly you are atheist. I understand your question about where God comes from, it must be hard for people like yourself to understand, but I pray it will be so. Do you believe in the Big Bang theory? If so, where did the gases and 'big bang' come from? Until you come to know Jesus as Saviour I am not sure you'll really have an answer as to where creation came from. The bible contains all the answers to life, but as you don't read it I won't argue on this one ;)
As to viruses, they are a result of sin. Everyone has sinned, but the blood of Jesus Christ Gods Son cleanses us from all sin. I agree that viruses such as aids are terrible, but look at the state of the world today. It gets worse by the second. I can't say that God didn't create viruses, but I can say he cares for everyone who will believe Him, and he uses tests and trials along life's thorny road only to preserve us and to strengthen us.
You must know that humans are not smart at all,we think wer smart because actually we are only thing on this planet with advanced brain, that was part or mistake by evolution, that extra space that we got from smaller jaws made difference between us and monkeys, but i am sure that one day when we are compared to other intelegent races we wont be near as them, unless we evolve/mutate or change our selfs to be smarter. Our main power is observing dont forget that from Babylon/Roman to medieval period nothing changed,we are copying nature and animals,on our own wer stupid, and thats why we need to const. learn or we forget. And look bad this world is going, wars for fuel/dominance/power just like and worste, our social life is geting destroyed with growing coruption from inside and with conflits from outside, wer living in 2014 and we still have politcs system that is old more then 2000 years.people/democracy have zero power unless they fight and die for it to win their rights,we are making/producing bad tehnology and every day worste food, our kids are geting dumb,We are faling to make life better for working clas and growing number of people is only becoming HARD WEIGHT...and we all know that and have brain-power to stop it but we cant, because people who will run our system are always going to fail because personal needs/greed wins.
