A Conversation with Michael Kenna 

Michael Kenna is a prolific landscape photographer, yet his process is slow in modern terms. Michael only shoots film for his personal work, and he develops all his images in the darkroom himself. Not many working photographers have a similar workflow like Michael today. What makes his images so compelling? Is it the film aspect of it? Is it because he's also a darkroom artist? Is it because of his 10 hour exposures? His sense of minimalism? I don't think it's just one thing. That's why I decided not to approach this interview with a list of pre-written questions. I also avoided over-studying his previous work nor read too much into his previous interviews or biographical write-ups. Instead I chose to listen to him speak first, and then I would get a better understanding of where his approach to photography is today.
