He said it clear as day, making the game a collectible first is a disservice to the players that keep the game alive!
@noffpoppin

It eventually ends up being bad for collectors too, when collectors are prioritized. The value of magic as a popular game is part of what makes it interesting to collectors. The other thing is balancing decisions for longevity versus maximizing quarterly numbers.

Just glad they let him talk freely. More epic man than final fantasy tactics arithmetician, and he's a math teacher to boot. Did like vid and bought his roguebook game on sale to show appreciation. Best thing to do is jump ship if you are priced out or they change politically (cancelled cards was too ridiculous for me).

@alphonsoinvestments it's sad how magic got worse since this (competitors too, yugioh power creep and pokemon worse card borders/art). Hard to buy that kinda devotion if people find something better to do. There's also a lot of video games like dragon ball z kakarot or flewfie's adventures and final fantasy 8 which all include card games as a minigame. Sword and fairy together forever too. Why would I want to pay for cards from a mismanaged, anti-consumer company in the modern day?

Actually its crazy because if you listen to him he says multiple things they are doing wrong i love it. He said you dont need a bunch of sets if there good. They have good cards but then they make bad cards on purpose that are fillers to male more sets. Then he says making it a collectible first knowing that’s exactly what they did. I feel he smacked them in the face a few times for us :) You know its bad when there is only 10k view and then 275 likes

Chess would be a terrible game if you could choose your pieces, but if you couldn't place a queen on the board until the 12th turn (similarly for all pieces), then that would suggest different army-building strategies. That's captured in Magic by the different mana costs of cards.
@enricomassignani

Also, you would not have access to all pieces at all time, but on each turn you "spawn" a random pieces from those you chose.

Boosters Marked up to 25 and selling for 100 months later:Truly absurd prices for packs. Putting the collector and the speculator before the player: a true terror! Thank goodness Richard Garfield was able to set the rudder to prevent that nonsense from happening in the game’s future. Now if you’ll excuse me I have a $32 standard collector booster to open and I need to go check if the TCG prices of Magic 30 have come back closer to their perfectly reasonable release price of $250 per pack.

Mr. Garfield, I understand that you are upset. The one thing I can tell you is this is a battle of inches; you need to constantly keep the pressure on Hasbro to get them to back off from MTG. If they offer you money so they can keep ownership of the game, then don’t take it (take it as bribery, regardless of the legal implications). Despite only being a fan for 3 years and not a business owner, I know that some (not all) businesses put profit over people and will do anything to increase their profits. Keep fighting, Mr. Garfield; this is another War of the Spark, only the spark is MTG itself, you are Ugin, and Hasbro is Nicol Bolas. I hope this has a good ending.

How intrusive is Magic in our lives today? People like me, breathe on its existance and longevity. Magic has become the most common game that about everybody knows or heard of it. MTG has become integral to the lives of many and a livelyhood to a mass of people. The sheer increase of depreciation of the game has hindered the outlook of the game overall. what was looked as nostalgia has turned into being "overwhelming"- What made MAgic exciting has been exasperated and exausted. We have reched a point where the "AWE" of the game has now been turned into "Taken for granted" Because we cannot take it serious anymore. Not becuase Magic is a joke... it is not... But because the business model has evolved from "feed the people- the players" into Segregate the player base. Via their wallet size, emotional conections of the game and favortism- not in that exact order. I mean I never thought there would be a day in my life, where I wrote a comment like this. Where I felt like the game has exceded past the invested players and the people who litterally built the game up by attending every pre-release, draft and spent hours and even free-days at their magic shop. building connections and memories. Building friendships and growth in the game. Some how- and I tie this comment down to this- Some how WOTC has turned from favoring the community over all and pushing for the individual player to be involved in the game. To seperating the players from those special connections with the community and taking the experience away from being an invested player. I may be wrong- you let me know?
@Hennesg
@Hennesg Год назад
I think the "somehow" is easy to explain. The overall company structure does not care about the game and its players burlt profit margins. Because of capitalistic dynamics in big franchises profit comes first. This did not used to be the case, profit was the reward for creating a good game everything else was just sugar on top for the creators and their company. Sure making money is great, and there will always be talks about how to increase profit aside from game design decisions but nowadays this is flipped around. Before EVERYTHING ELSE the company will ask "how can we make more money next quarter from this" and not "what cool set can we do next, what's a cool mechanic, how can we shake up the meta etc etc". Sure there are alot of people passionate about the game working at WOTC, they try to make a good game, but nobody can tell me that never was there a instruction from the higher ups to print more EDH cards in the sets because then the packs sell better. I'm pretty sure the brothers war was chosen to milk the base based on nostalgia, it was setting first, mechanics later. "What setting, what plane will make is the most money right now? are there any ideas for mythic rares that will become" must buys" in all formats?

Hasbro’s squeezing Magic: The Gathering players for too much money, big bank warns Stock plummets as analyst says Hasbro is ‘killing its golden goose’ By Charlie Hall on November 14, 2022 12:17 pm A Bank of America analyst says Hasbro is “destroying the long-term value” of Magic: The Gathering by overprinting cards. The dire warning was accompanied by a double downgrade of Hasbro stock - from “buy” to “underperform” - as its valuation fell more than 5% before trading began on Monday. “Hasbro is overproducing Magic cards which has propped up recent results,” wrote research analyst Jason Haas. “Card prices are falling, game stores are losing money, collectors are liquidating and large retailers are cutting orders.”
