A Corner in Wheat is a film directed by • David Wark Griffith
based on two short stories by Frank Norris : The Pit and _A Deal in Wheat_. It was produced by the American Mutoscope & Biograph Company in 1909 and released during the same year. The film tells the story of an unscrupulous speculator who reduces farmers into poverty to get rich.
In this film, Griffith uses the parallel editing technique. The director alternates scenes of the speculator who is enriched with scenes of the farmers who impoverish. The two stories are independent of each other and do not cross on a narrative level, but they can be linked on an ideological level. The parallel editing does not have the simple purpose of narrating, but of morally involving the viewer. This editing technique will be the basis of the film Intolerance where Griffith compares four different stories, distant in time and space, but connected to the common theme of intolerance.
Tra gli interpreti figurano non accreditati anche • Henry Lehrman e • George Nichols , futuri registi dei primi film di Chaplin prodotti dalla Keystone .
