A well-written theory and, like many others have said, it'll be interesting to see a follow-up or something once you've finished the game, hint hint. One thing I'd like to add, though: I feel like Vert does have some personality change in HDD, although it's more subtle than the others. As Vert, she is polite, refined, all "goodness me", a perfect lady. As Green Heart, she is considerably more boastful, arrogant and prone to backhanded compliments and passive-agressiveness. I feel this is best exemplified by how the two forms interact with their Loweean counterparts. Vert never goes beyond playful teasing when interacting with Blanc, sometimes giving a "with friends like these" feel or like she likes provoking Blanc to get a reaction out of her (make of that what you will), while Green Heart (in the first game) outright says that White Heart is "the least fitting" to be true goddess, because of her small chest, or when Ultra!Green Heart had an obsession with having the largest chest; basically going "I must be the largest, the best, the most beautiful! Me!"

I like this theory. Though, I feel like, Neptune intentionally goofs off because it is stated over and over planeptune has the best technology. If she tried as hard as say, Noire did all the time, it would probably hurt the other nations a lot, and she sees the other CPU's as her friends, so she doesn't want to do that. I feel like it isn't that she can't be serious in her human form, but rather, she feels that it would end badly if she chose to be.

Senpai Blade There also have been a few times she has been shown to be serious in human form. Usually when something big/drastic is happening. Usually that big thing is from an outside threat to her friends.

This is a very late response, obviously, but I think you are dead-on with Neptune here. If we remember Re;birth1 (not canon, but still indicative of the capabilities of the goddesses) and Re;birth3 (even if it's a simulation) openings, we see that Purple Heart is capable of giving the other three goddesses a good fight even when they come at her 3-on-1. This says a lot about just how strong Neptune is, and if she did go all-out all the time, it would be inevitable that they would have to gang up on her (and her nation) in order to keep themselves from being pushed into irrelevance. Nep doesn't want another round of Console Wars; they're no good for anyone (and while we haven't seen those happen in the canon timeline, it is noted in some of the exposition bits that the nations/CPU's haven't always gotten along. Thus, Neptune is sandbagging. Of course, once she started doing this, she also found that just doing her own thing is actually pretty fun and now she probably sandbags a little (a lot?) too much. But when the chips are down and people's lives (or even their well-being) are at stake, Nep is generally the first one to step up, whether she's transformed or not, and this is indicative of her true personality. Remember that in Nep's dream, everyone is happy. That's what Neptune lives for. And everyone is only happy when the world is at peace.
@HebiSnake
@HebiSnake 4 года назад
@@wildwind4456 Thanks for the response and discussion even if it is late. Yeah she definitely has her moments and it's clear that even if the other CPUs tell her she needs to work more (out of worry for Neptune's wellbeing) that they do respect her in the end. They know what she is capable of when serious for sure. Further, when Neptune steps up and gets serious, then EVERYONE else does too. I interpret that as them acknowledging Neptune's abilities; that if Neptune needs to get serious then they should too. ALL the personal bickering and goofing around gets put aside when Neptune is serious; everyone goes into a "let's get shit done" mode. Kind of a subtle recognition of respect for her, but it's there.

Interestingly, it appears that the Planeptune goddesses all suppress their true personalities to a degree when in human form. Nep is all playful and laid back, not wanting to cause conflict between the nations during times of peace, as her true personality is highly intelligent, observant, and competative. Plutia suppresses her sadistic tendencies as she knows it would cause massive problems for everyone. Uzume suppressed her playfulness as she sees it as part of the reason she failed as a CPU as well as, from her POV at the beginning of VII, it being necessary to lead a nation in a state of apocalypse. So in a way, all three of them are doing what they think is best for the world at large, thinking beyond their own nations all the time.

This was a great theory, also remember the transformation sequences in VII? They hold up the share crystal, and then where do they put it next to transform? Their heart. The crystal hears their heart's desire and they become what they want to be. (I'm suddenly reminded of Shugo Chara LOL) Whether this theory is true or false, its a nice way to see things. Its also the way most magical girls transform in anime.

I believe that the Ultradimension HDD brings out the worst in a person. While the Hyperdimension HDD brings out the best of a person. Turning someone into the best or worst version of themselves. Let’s run a comparison between CPUs and their counterparts. To explain what I mean. Purple Heart: Powerful, mature, and the first to dive into the fray. Neptune casts off the mask of laziness, and becomes the most powerful one on the field. Iris Heart: Plutia goes from a sweet, and innocent girl with sadistic tendencies. To a full blown dominatrix, and is feared by her friends. It didn’t highlight her sweetness, or innocence. It dials her gentle sadism to 100 Shades of Iris. Hyper Black Heart: Confident, graceful, charismatic, the epitome of a true goddess. Her social awkwardness gone, and Noire becomes uninhibited. Ultra Black Heart: Arrogant and always picking fights. Very focused on her nation’s prosperity. Instead of caring for her friends. Hyper White Heart: The righteous and divine fury of a goddess. She is the spirit of the group. The most ready to defend her friends and family. Channeling her temper into divine judgement. Ultra White Heart: A toxic rage, instead of a righteous fury. She was savage, she attacked like an explosion, and left like a storm. Hyper Green Heart: She turns from a gentle, and kind woman, into a driven and ambitious person. Someone who enjoys bantering with her friends and a good fight. Ultra Green Heart: Selfish and has tunnel vision. Obsessed with little sisters. Unlike Hyper Vert, who can go overboard, but also is capable of restraint. Ultra Vert has no restraint.

I think of the human form and HDD as (pardon the cliché) being like two sides of a coin. Different, yes, but it doesn't mean that one is more "true" than the other.

@elixxon

Yeah I was thinking something like this. The human form and the CPU form is just two part of their personality. Both are the real person and neither is any false. Purple Heart is an usual main heroine who always does the right thing, fights fairly and always enjoys a good fight. Such a personality doesn't really have any purpose in peaceful times so her human persona is a lazy and carefree girl who loves to have fun with everyone. Noire, Vert, and Blanc's CPU forms work similarly. Black Heart and Green Heart has a serious attitude, while Noire is overworking and socially insecure because of the solitude of it, and Vert is a pervy online game addict otaku. White Heart is mostly angry, while Blanc is calm with the occasional eruption of repressed anger. The CPU candidates in my theory have a lack in personality change because they have born kinda differently and they had an older sister to learn from and take things step by step. As it seems to me when the people of a nation creates a CPU it is mostly more combat oriented in personality at first so she can defend the nation from monsters and other threats and the human personality develops later. Since the candidates had their older sisters they did not needed the mature, combat focused personality. They seemingly develop in reverse having the immature human personality first and developing the combat one of the CPU form later. In Uzume's case I think she might have been born in very peaceful times so her CPU personality is a cheerful and immature one with a weapon that doesn't seem to be designed for combat at all. I don't think the candidates are going to develop the mature fighter personality in their human form too though because Uzume mostly has to stay in human form since she have to save her share crystals. The Ultradimension goddesses are born human and became CPUs later by finding a CPU memory. The transformation seems to bring out oppressed personality traits. In Plutia's case she might had sadistic urges but kept them in her subconscious because she didn't wanted to hurt people.... then became an expert at it in CPU form so she known how to not hurt people "too much". When her Iris Heart part started leaking out in human form she was under huge emotional stress since Peashy was gone and the Seven Sages used an overpowered CPU and children turned into monsters as weapons so there was nothing much to do against it. But when the issue got resolved by Mr Badd quitting the Seven Sages to take care of the children and Peashy returning she have returned to normal and Iris Heart showed a caring and even motherly attitude toward Peashy. So Plutie leaked into Iris Heart at this point it seems. In Rei's case she was the wimpy but good willing person and in CPU form her tendency to get drunk by power have surfaced and it eventually led to the destruction of her nation traumatizing her and seemingly causing a slight multiple personality disorder. In the true end of the game she accepts her other self and doesn't fear herself anymore so she can muster her inner strenght.
@SenpaiBlade
@SenpaiBlade 8 лет назад
Otariossauro mentioned that as well, how both their human forms and CPU forms were their true selves, and I agree with that. And that's an interesting point you bring up with the CPU having a combat oriented personality... That might change a few things for me, depending on what happens in the future of this game... Interesting...

ATTENTION: Massive wall of text with rambling and theorizing. Only read it if you have the spare time because it sooooo long...... Was playing Re;Birth3 and at the part where Neptune asks about how becoming a CPU works in the Ultradimension, Noire explains that it is very-very hard because of the CPU memories are extremely rare and without being born with the affinity the person will just turn into a monster. It made me remember stuff and piece stuff together. A "True Goddess" seems to be a reoccurring thing in the various dimensions. In one way or another it have created the goddesses or the system in which goddesses are born or made. Seemingly to keep a form of change with generations of goddesses following each other but interestingly these goddesses are divided from the True Goddess by... well not being called True Goddess. In the dimension of the first game the True Goddess fell apart into the four goddesses. In the Hyperdimension it is stated that a "True Goddess" named SG or SC have created Histoire. It is possible that there were multiple True Goddesses is the Hyperdimension since no connection to SG was mentioned with Noire, Blanc, and Vert. For unknown reasons the True Goddess' whereabouts or fate, also how was the Hyperdimension's "CPUs are born from faith" system were made are unknown. In the Ultradimension we have the CPU Cores. Artificial objects that produce CPU Memories. Said to produce Memories in a random rate but the one in Planeptune was suspiciously active lately not only producing Plutia's Core but also two other ones for Noire and Hyper-Neptune. As it seems to me the way the CPU Memories in the Ultradimension are made there are safety mechanisms to avoid an unfitting or evil person to rule even if they are born with the ability to become a CPU. -First time transformation grants an apparently finite amount of power seen in the fight against Arfoire when Neptune and Noire first transformed and also when Peashy just flied home when she first transformed. Without a supply of shares from faith the person is unable to transform afterwards. Seen in Peashy doesn't showing signs of having CPU powers after she got home and also Blanc was unable to transform when the people lost faith in her... So no faithful people = no godhood... Rei is seemingly an exceptional case because she seems to had the ability to absorb negative energy right from the beginning otherwise she couldn't possibly have stayed in HDD 24/7. Since the Memory was with Croire who was stated to be from an other dimension that Memory was probably either tampered with or a straight up alien one from another dimension. -The second one can lead to dark places... although Rei's Memory seems to be an odd one it apparently shares this feature or a similar one. As it seems the Memory makes it so that the subconscious of the person is going to surface causing the personality change in HDD. At first glance it can be seen as being the exact same as the change in the Hyperdimension goddesses' personality but from certain moments it seems to also have some errors. There is the infamous moment where the team faces Blanc in Lowee and Noire being in HDD tries to come up with a way to deal with the situation of Abnes broadcasting the scene in the entirety of Lowee. For some reason she comes to the conclusion of making Plutia to transform is the best since it will scare Planeptune citizens away from her, making Lastation to go to the top... Pretty much planning to betray Plutia.... The problem with this scene is how much does it not make any sense. Not only that Planeptune is too small to have any importance, but also it is hinted that Noire willingly doesn't fights back Iris Heart or just leave Plutia even after becoming a goddess and technically being much stronger than her. But it doesn't end with Noire. Both Vert and Blanc showed a similarly weird behavior when they first encountered Yellow Heart. Well.... they tried to straight up murder her over cupsizes..... yeah.... Blanc showed to be easily angerable and Vert being very proud of having such a large set of "assets" but going for the kill over it is way too much. This is a very troubling trait. This means the person could just spontaneously murder or hurt someone if stimulated in certain ways or simply randomly. This seems like more of bug than intended safety measure though... aaaaand I rambled on and on for like 1.5-2 hours....

That's something I caught myself pondering about at times as well. I view this matter in a slightly more analytical way, in regards to each character's psychology and the overall picture of this discussion. I'm INTJ after all... The main point being - what the "true" form is doesn't quite matter. Or rather, it's one and the same with their human forms. Quoting the Persona series (which has a lot of reflexion about one's true inner self), "I am you and you are me." A CPU is what they are as human and goddess both, and one cannot exist without the other. Much like in Persona, one's personality is a "mask" which they don upon interacting with others. However, this "mask" is you, and whatever's beyond it is also yourself. The mask is shaped by your own mind, and how each person presents it is up to themselves only (symbolized by the recent Persona protagonists being "Wild Cards", as in that they can hold and summon many different Personas - normal people possess only one, particular to themselves - and they strengthen them by interacting with people of other Arcana (for people, it represents personality archtypes; for Personas, it's just their group) and learning more about how they act and see things through that "mask". Using myself as an example, I have a clearly defined "mask" and a clearly defined "inner self". The mask analogy is nice, but in the end they're both me. It's merely the parts of me that I chose to show people, and the parts that I show only to a select few. Some people have a very thin "mask", others have quite different exterior and interior personalities. Coming back to the CPUs, I believe the same holds true. Nep is Nep, Purple Heart is Purple Heart, and they're one and the same - as well as every other CPU out there. Of course, the game won't bother expanding deep into psychological matters about their inner thoughts, since that's not the point, but comparing to all that huge load I just dumped here, I'd say each CPU's inner self is more of a "Removing ordinary mental limitations regarding inner wishes, please wait... Process complete! Press ENTER to proceed" than an actual look into complex mentality discussions, so it serves more as a slightly exaggerated reference to those things. Still, I believe that the CPUs who change the most (Neptune, Blanc, Plutia - Uzume is a slightly different matter - and Rei) are already quite conflicted normally, so by changing forms - in which they "remove their masks" - they're letting their suppressed thoughts show, but they're still the same people, just "larger"... mostly. (Sorrrrry, Blanc) Uzume is what I'd call "She'd be more moe if the environment didn't fuck her up". Just like we are byproducts of the environment we live in, Uzume is a harsh Knuckles (uhh, nevermind) but a cutesy nurse girl at the same time. Like I said, though, this matter is more exaggerated in Neptunia, therefore she's very tomboyish while normal and very soft while in HDD, but I believe they're still one and the same - she does like helping people and being nice and all, but she still enjoys kicking ass. As the CPU who changes the most in a series where personality shifts are way more emphasized upon than the blurred line they are in reality, the two main points of her personality are extremized, so the human self and the CPU self are drastically different where they should be a bit closer, but whatever. The CPU Candidates... I don't know. They're kids, so they do have a very, very thin "mask", but it feels like it's a bit of an issue regarding their actual characters. I can forgive Rom and Ram - they're as shallow and straightforward as children should be, with nothing deep to worry about in their minds - but Nepgear and Uni are certainly old enough to have some deeper conflict, and that could be some missed opportunity in the dev team's part. Nepgear's HDD gets only slightly more determined, while it could definitely be sharper, more robot-nutcase-ish and driven to be useful no matter what, and Uni's HDD could be more similar to Noire's in that she's more aggressive and less doubting, and eager to prove herself useful. In my opinion, Ge-Ge and Uni could very well have as much of a personality shift as their sisters do. Plutia, amusingly enough, showcases the more realistic side of this through V/Re;3, albeit... you know, just a bit more yandere sadomasochist than a normal person would be. Iris Heart starts leaking into Ploot, and she gets a bit bloodthirsty even while human. Her sleepiness isn't as sharp, but boring things still bore her out the same, she just prefers to punch them away. Their personalities blend together, and while what Plutia has behind her mask isn't what you would find in a normal person (I hope!), the concept fits well. I think that the less serious take on each girl's personality - look at all the jokes spanning from Nep, Noire and Blanc - makes the blurred line between their self halves become very clear, and leaves the impression that one is more real than another. Taking Vert for a moment, it feels like she's just someone whose "mask" is also thin, and she's just not too bothered about her inner self, therefore she doesn't have much to hide to begin with. The point is - Human and HDD are just different ways to show the entirety of one's being, and one does not cancel another, only complements. Like I said, the series exaggerates the personality shift, so they're polarized, and display less of their "mask" traits than an actual person does (In a sense that while you do have this "mask" towards certain people and show your true self towards others, they mesh seamlessly into eachother, like, uhh... mixing chocolate powder in milk? :V). My final conclusion is that disregarding the extremization in personalities, the CPUs could very well portrait their inner selves while human, given the right circumstances. I see the HDD as just a shortcut towards these personality traits, not something different altogether. They can show their inner psyche in the right circumstances while human. They're probably portrayed in a more straightforward way while in HDD just to make it more evident and allow them to act in certain ways without involving more complex triggers to certain mental aspects in the middle of a battle. "Summary please!! ;_;" Human and HDD forms are equal, and I believe that one is not more "true" than another; it's simply a shortcut switch that allows them to display certain traits while suppressing others when the story demands so. Speaking from a development POV, this was likely the objective in the first game, and only later did these deeper psychological aspects show up, such as Uzume, but the concept was already there, and the series doesn't rely heavily upon personal mentality like Persona does, so it just sorta sits there. ...I promised myself I wouldn't type another wall of text. Proceeded to type the bloody Berlin Wall. *canned applause* Well, that's my two (thousand) cents. I'm probably thinking way too much along the Psychology line of explanation, and I must admit I'm biased towards dipping things in Jung, but... screw that! It's been a good mental exercise for me, anyways.
@SenpaiBlade

I don't disagree. (And INTJ huh, that fits!) In fact, I was actually going to bring some of that stuff up, but I didn't want to get too personal and technical. I actually have some experiences with mental illnesses and have discussed them in great detail with many experts. While I did not specialize in that field, I do have a large knowledge base concerning that area. As to why that is, I'd prefer not to say, but that's also were I got some of my info. And you're right. Their human forms are just as much apart of them as their CPU forms. The defenses you build as you grow up is very much apart of your character. So I guess "true" wasn't the correct term. What I should say is that there's simply a link to how the character acts and how their CPU form acts. Or perhaps the CPU forms give us greater insight on who they are as a person :)

The only flaw in this is that the Hyper Dimension CPUs are pure goddesses and their HDD forms are their real selves. The Ultra Dimension CPUs are ascended goddesses and their HDD forms exaggerate everything about them, including their negative personality traits. For example Blanc is quicker to anger, Noire is more aggressive, Vert is more arrogant, Plutia's sadism is greatly enhanced and Peashy changes the least due to how young she is. Neptune had to order Noire and Blanc to turn back into human form after they fought Vert because they were more apt to get out of control and with Iris Heart going nuts, she couldn't handle everyone in HDD. Rei's power gives her insanity and megalomania (it happens when you're THAT powerful).
@amordelohn_
@amordelohn_ 4 года назад
I know this is an old video but I'm glad to see a video about this theory! It makes a lot of sense and I agree with you for most of the things, I think that their CPU form reveals their most "inner" traits and that's why Nepgear, Uni, Rom, Ram and Peashy (and eventually Vert, even though I think her Ultradimension counterpart changes a bit more) don't change that much, because they don't have the kind of personality with an hidden trait. Another thing that supports this is how some characters (especially Plutia and Blanc) are shown to sometimes let themselves go to their "inner" behavior. For example Blanc is a calm, quiet and nearly emotionless acting person (though am I the only who things that in Megadimension this goes to almost entirely wane or it's my imagination? even her voice actor, at least in the english version because I don't know if in the japanese is the same, seems to act more expressive than she used to in the previous girl when she voiced perfectly the epitome of a cold and mysterious quiet girl) and she seems to be just this, but the truth is that when she's angry she is really an aggressive person, a trait that doesn't come out everytime because it's indeed an inner trait, one she tries to hide most of the times when she is in human form, but when she goes HDD she doesn't care anymore. Same for Plutia, her sadist attitude rarely comes out when she's in human form, but shows up everytime she goes HDD. They were only the most evident example and I obviously can't write a book in a comment but that's kinda the point. By the way, sorry for my eventual bad english.

I always assumed HDD is just how they would be as adaults. As Adault Nep HAS a vary similiar voice too Purple Heart in japanzee that even made me more certin of this. If Neptune would grow up, she would one day, probably in her 20s look like Purple Heart. Now her hair would of course be a diffrent coloure but otherwhsie they would be identical. Purple Heart is simply a fully grown matured Neptune, and as Neptune is always so immature of course this causes a great personality shift. She literley goes from her Teenage self too her adault self. Same goes fore the other CPUs, wich is REALY terrefying with Plutia. Peashey and Uzume are a bit diffrent, we know Uzumes cool personality is more of an act she puts on, that has gone on fore so long it became her acual personality. But Orange Heart is how Uzume woul naturally be as an adault, so maybe as an adault she would have relized she dosnt need too act tuff and drop the act. As fore Yellow Heart........yeah I got nothing, its entirley possible that this is caused by somthing Anonydeath did too keep her easeley controled ore a side effect of her being so young.

so it's basically their opposites when they transform... I will be broken down if matpat supports a theory like this XD smart of you thinking that though

i wouldnt say its their opposites, the candidates are the same, Plutia has some sadistic tendencies that come to the forefront in her cpu form (and magnified) Peashy is the same, Nep and Uzume are really the only ones who change drastically (noire, vert and blanc remain the same just certain aspects of their personalities become more dominant like noire and her responsibility, vert and her pride, blanc and her anger) and uzume is shown to act like orange heart when she is daydreaming

Will this helps me with how yellow heart. From is so drastic. Even in her human from she always had mass power. So her CPU from is her.body being able to batter handle her massive power.

Funny, I talked about this long time ago with an artist in Deviant art. men-dont-scream.deviantart.com/art/HDN-Farewell-446142308?offset=25#comments While, the things I was talking about there is in relation to the image, it does bring up similar points to this video. (Also you may realise someone, linked this video in the comment chain.) I always thought, their HDD form was their inner, less restrained self. I mean as much as Neptune and Plutia may change. You do still see some bits where regardless of their form, they are consistent. Neptune's dislike of eggplants is still the same, her willing to reach for the happiest ending is always the same. Plutia, while many confused and though her HDD and human form was mixing up. It does show she will dominate the scene through intimidation. Only difference being she only shows this when she is angry, while in HDD she just shows it like it's simply part of her. and as mentioned Uzume is a prime example of this, since it confirms that she acts specifically that way in human form to give relief to the monsters.
@SenpaiBlade
@SenpaiBlade 7 лет назад
Well, actually, Plutia has been shown to use dominance in her normal form. Remember when Neptune said she started acting like Iris Heart? I get the feeling that Plutia's normal state is "sleepy". She only reveals her true self when she "wakes up". What wakes her up could be a lot of things, but the most common one seems to be anger. And I do like the idea of unrestrained, but Neptune, Vert and Ram seem to be a lot calmer in HDD so I'm not sure I'd call it that.
@NotASuspicousPerson
@NotASuspicousPerson 7 лет назад
Well, unrestrained in the way of expression. One can be more calm while being less restrained from their way of expression. As you said, her less-restrained desire to be more of a mature, reliable role-model, makes her to shift from silly to a more serious and generally more reliable looking goddess. As forPlutia's default state, if her default state is "sleepy", I would really want to know what her actual "sleepy" state would be like (would she even have one? Or is it more binary?).

It's kinda sad that I cannot give you the answers you want because it'll ruin part of your experience with the game, but believe me, you'll get all your answers after you finish it. It's also kind of sad that I cannot comment about it as well, lol. :c I'll let you guys share your theories until then.

Rei being kinda a psychopath dude Rei tried to destroy a dimension just to kill 4 cpus just for something she did in the past how is that not being a psychopath dude you seriously are underestimating Rei entirely plus if you add in what she tried to do in victory then that means Rei has the power to destroy space and time

"collateral damage is justified as long as the gain outweight the cost. Funny. At least a CPU lives didnt come cheap"
@satriadicky3732
@satriadicky3732 3 года назад
Space and time? There is no such thing as space and time Space is never a thing. What we perceive as space is always there it. Time well future and past is just a concept to make understanding of life a lot easier for us. The truth is there is only a present. Whether the present move backward or forward isnt matter cuz we gonna perceive it as forward anyway.
