New Super Mario Bros. Wii has always been one of my favorite games. When I found out the game was getting a true successor, I was SUPER excited. New Super Mario Bros U is the game that really made me want to get a Wii U. It's been almost a decade since it released. But unlike New Super Mario Bros 2, I was very surprised revisiting this Wii U game.

Fun thing is, deluxe actually REMOVES content. The touch screen co-op feature and the challenges related to it might be unappealing or something many simply don't care about, but they are indeed a part of the game they decided to cut altogether. They didn't have much choice, but it really goes to show that the switch version isn't the deluxe version of the game by any means. Also, the loading times are longer. Go figure.

I'm sorry but my biggest problem with NSMBU is that they removed COLORED YOSHIS. Seriously what was the point in removing the beautiful yellow, light blue and pink yoshis from NSMBW. Having them all be green feels wrong and super boring. If the problem was that they'd have the same color as baby yoshis, then just use other colors. It's as simple as that. Colors like red, brown, orange and purple could've been used and it would've been just fine.
@Demeech

I have no idea why they did that. If you want a red Yoshi in HD, Super Mario Maker 2 has one.

To be fair, you need to applaud NSMBU for a lot of things that it did. Sure. The fact that certain iconic enemies are underused, like how all of the hammer bros besides for fire bros were only in one level, or that the only fire chomp in the game is in a random secret area in world 8, but this game did definitely take a few unique strides from Wii. It brought back some classic elements like baby Yoshies and torpedo teds, and innovated on them. (Such as with unique abilities for tre baby Yoshies, and a new honing variant of torpedo teds.) And, a lot of the level themes were pretty interesting. Everyone talks about the Van Gogh level in Soda Jungle, but there’s also the deep water level in that same world that doesn’t feel as dull as the water cave level in Wii, the haunted shipwreck level in Sparkling Waters, and the athletic levels that used yellow and pink clouds instead of white ones in Layer Cake Desert and Merengue Clouds. Speaking of which, Nintendo brought back the actual world names from SMW, and even gave each level their own name. Sure. “Snake Block Tower” may not be the most interesting name, but it’s better than saying 5-tower. This game also has the most interesting castles in the series. The generic lava castle only gets used in worlds 1, 2, 5, and 6. For the rest of them, Nintendo made actually unique castle backgrounds, and even made them somewhat outdoor in worlds 3 and 7. And, having to fight the Koopalings in their respective airships was definitely an interesting change of pace. It also incentivized Nintendo to actually make each Koopaling fight distinct from the other, unlike the previous two games. All of the Koopalings use new, somewhat challenging gimmicks, unlike NSMB2 which barely tried at all.

New Super Mario Bros U (IMO) is one of the best 2D Mario games, and one of the most underrated of them all. I feel this game gets a bad reputation because of it being on the Wii U, being the 4th NSMB game, and getting a simple port. But this game is absolutely stellar. First, the level design is spectacular. It takes a gimmick, like spinning stars or bouncy clouds, and works off that in an intelligent way. The level design is fun for both one or four players. Unlike NSMBW, there usually isn’t wasted space. There are only a few unique ideas, like the giant hand of Boarding the Airship. Even if the game isn’t the most creative, it uses ideas from NSMBW, like rafts and swimmable bubbles a lot better than NSMBW did. The colors pop out, creating very visually appealing gameplay. I do have a problem with the secrets. I think the game uses invisible walls and blocks a bit too much. I’m used to looking for invisible walls, with an odd gap in the terrain or coins as directions, but other times, it can be absurd. The multiplayer is also a lot less chaotic than NSMBW. Also, the graphics in this game are amazing. I know graphics aren’t everything, however, they can improve the experience. Coming with HD, the backgrounds in the game are beautiful. Some examples include the end of Haunted Shipwreck and Filiprus Lake/ Prickly Goombas. The worlds are also in one interconnected world map, which adds to the immersion. I do think that the transitions from world to world should have been better, but it could have been difficult to do; a transition between a snow world to a jungle world would be unnatural. Can we appreciate the fact that the worlds and levels have actual names, instead of just World 7 and World 5-3, it’s Meringue Clouds and Bramball Woods. You aren’t forced to use motion controls, you can also use Pro Controllers, the Gamepad, and on the Switch version, joy cons. I also really like the power-ups. The Flying Squirrel is extremely versatile, without being too overpowered, like some may say for the Propellor Suit. The Baby Yoshis are also a fine addition. The bosses are honestly mostly mediocre. The only few that stand out are Iggy, Morton, Ludwig, the Sumo Bro, and the Bowser Jr. battles. The final boss Bowser is one of the most underrated Mario final bosses. Yes, he grows big again, but You actually fight Bowser one on one, instead of just running away from him. Bowser breathes fire, rains fireballs, swings his arms to whack you like a fly, tries to step on you, and spins in his shell. Bowser Jr. is also there, adding to the difficulty. For me, the fight was hard at first, but got very easy over time. The background for this fight is marvelous, giving an ominous and dark sort-of feel. The music is also great, the hard rock is very energetic, like Evil King Bowser of SMW and Baby Bowser of SMW2YI. I also find the new music in this game to be satisfactory. Sure they aren’t that revolutionary (other than the final boss theme), but for me, it’s definitely catchy. Even if you aren’t fond of it, at least it is different and doesn’t take all the tunes NSMBW. I find this to be probably the most “cinematic” of the 2D Mario games. The story, while simple, shakes things up with Peach and her entire castle being taken over. Bowser tries to stop you from making your way there. When advancing your journey, there will be intervals where you see how Bowser is slowly taking over Peach’s castle. The final boss is also somewhat cinematic. I haven’t even brought up the side modes. Coin rush is back, along with the new Boost Rush and Challenge Mode, which are all fun. There are also bonus videos, showing some cool mechanics of the game. New Super Luigi U is a marvelous DLC, giving an extra challenge. I prefer Mario U because I prefer to have a casual experience than a hard one, but NSLU is still fantastic to have. This may be an unpopular opinion, but NSMBUD is even better. To explain, we must go back to 2013 (or 2014), when my brother and I got the Wii U with Mario U + Luigi U. We really wanted the game, but when we played it, it was INCREDIBLY difficult. The Overworld Theme was characterized as the theme of terror. We asked cousins and friends to see if they could get us further in the game, but even they failed. My friend, who has played Super Mario Sunshine, couldn’t complete Haunted Shipwreck. We were stuck on Worlds 3 and 4, and haven’t touched the game for years. It was only until 2020, stuck in our homes with nothing to do, when I slipped back in the disk. My older self now wished to finish the game, and after much learning from RU-vid, I learned how to dash, get a Squirrel Acorn boost, and make a triple jump. Within a year, I beat the game. Now a Mario veteran would look at me and go, “man of course, that game is so easy”, but at the time, a huge wave of triumph washed over me. Now, imagine if I hadn’t thrown the game away for seven or so years. Imagine if my friends and cousins weren’t stuck on the 3rd & 4th worlds? That’s where NSMBUDX comes in. It’s trying to cater to the people who aren’t veterans of Mario. My inexperienced friends & cousins could pop in the game and actually have a fun time, without dying ever couple seconds. It’s extremely evident, especially with the inclusion of a how to play guide. The game is trying to appeal to a casual, mostly beginner market of Mario games. Games like Super Mario Maker 2 and Mario Odyssey might not be the best game for starters. I don’t think NSMBUDX is that good of a port, but it’s still a great game. I find it ironic that it was almost universally agreed that while Boost Mode was fun for about five minutes, it wasn’t exactly that impressive, and now in the port, everyone is angered on the exclusion of the mode. Blue Toad is still in the game, and I find the reception of his status to be blown out of proportion and nit-picky. I also find it ironic that people asked for characters who weren’t the generic toads, and when Nintendo finally gives a new character, everyone is unsatisfied. In the port, you can play at a better resolution, choose whatever character in single-player, new characters, and portability, which I would certainly prefer over Boost Mode. I will admit that the change of pressing the jump button twice resulting in a spin jump is strange and unnecessary, and I understand if some find it uncanny. You see, NSMBU isn’t a very competitive or professional game, it’s just a game full of crazy fun, especially when playing with four players, not really needing all balanced characters for competitiveness, this isn’t Super Mario Maker 2 or Super Smash Bros. Additionally, as Toadette, it isn’t required to get the Super Crown. Toadette can still get Super Acorns and Fire Flowers. I also want to say that the NSFW fan art has nothing to do with the game itself, and is on the fault of the artists. It’s like a NSFW photo of an actress, are you going to stop liking that actress’s films, even if they are good? I also want to point out that Super Mario 3D World has Peach and Rosalina, both who make the game easier (especially Rosalina), but no one seems to take notice. To conclude, Mario U is fantastic. I’d say that if you didn’t have Mario U on Wii U, or wanted Luigi U, then the Deluxe version wouldn’t be bad for you. It shouldn’t be at a 60 dollar price tag, but since it has been out for a while, the price guaranteed to be lower. However, the changes aren’t enough for me to buy it again. Congratulations on reading all this, and if it wasn’t clear, this is all my opinion.

I think the reason they left Yoshi as level-restricted is because they didn't want to have to design every level with him in mind. If you could just take yoshi with you, you could very easily use him to cheese levels, and Nintendo is nothing if not adamant you have to play their games exactly how they want you to.

New Super Mario Bros U and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze both came out on the same console, yet Tropical Freeze has more original content, ideas, boss fights, and presentation. Talk about self-competition. While I definitely don’t hate Mario U, I don’t really love it either. It exists perfectly fine as a standalone game, but in the context of the series so much of it is just repeated content from older Mario games, mostly Mario Wii. Mario Wii had a dark desert cave, Mario U had a dark desert cave. Mario 3 had a level with giant enemies, Mario U had a level with giant enemies. Mario Wii had a level where you keep enemies off a raft, Mario U had a level where you keep enemies off your raft. I can excuse reused boss fights to an extent, and reused level ideas as long as something different is done with them, but nearly every Mario level New Super Mario Bros U copies it does it worse than the original. Especially the interconnected world map. There are some good things in it sprinkled here and there, like the Challenge Mode and Van Gogh level, but if you want a 2D platformer for the Wii U, get Tropical Freeze.

The first footage we ever saw of NSMBU in that Wii U trailer was QUITE LITERALLY just a NSMBWii rom hack, all the tilesets, shading, and whatnot were still just vanilla NSMBWii ones, the only new or updated things being Mario's lives icon, one random element of the background, and Mario looking out at the player after a few seconds of standing still, other than that it was literally identical in every other way. It quite literally looked like a rom hack of NSMBWii, and a cheap not-very-good one at that, NOT an official new upcoming game. To be fair the final game is also technically a NSMBWii hack, but it's a way more official-looking, polished up, and HD one with all-new tilesets, backgrounds, higher-quality models, new lighting/shading, etc., unlike the initial reveal in the Wii U's reveal trailer.

New Super Mario Bros. U is in my top 5 2D Mario's. I remember playing this game for the first time at a Wii U Kiosk in my local Wal-Mart. I got halfway through the the first World but stoped because I had to get going. I tried convincing my Parents to get a Wii U in 2014, the year I graduated High School. (It's embarrassing for me because I had no job yet, I was 17 turning 18 that Year. Plus all the places I applied for never called me back I didn't get my First job until 2017 when I was 21, and I still have that Job) I never got a Wii U because it would've cost too much for my Parents plus they thought the Wii U was some sort of Wii accessory at the time. So fast forward to 2017, I got my first Job and bought myself a Switch. From there I bought most of the Wii U ports and I can say the Wii U had great games. But then I seen the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe trailer and remembered playing it back on that Wal-Mart Kiosk. So I pre-ordered it at GameStop, and I finally played the game. I played as Mario throughout the main Game and used the button combination to disable B as Spin Jump (I found the button combination out through GameXplains video) and from there I really liked the game. I can agree with this video on the points made but for me New Super Mario Bros. U is still in my Top 5 2D Mario's

The be fair about not being able to take Yoshi out of levels, some SMW romhacks do that because he can be, well, kinda overpowered. It's especially common in collab romhacks (which also often filter out powerups on the world map, so you start each level as small Mario), so one person's Yoshi-centered level doesn't obliterate other levels that are designed around default Mario abilities. It's weird in an official Nintendo game, though, yeah.

While I certainly understand the idea to rein in gamebreaking abilities, there is something very freeing about games like SMW or Mega Man 2 that generally have polished level design, and just kind of let you abuse it if you choose.

New Super Mario Bros U is always has been just a huge pile of missed potential for me. It feels like it tried in everyway to innovate the NSMB series, but decided only to take baby steps to do so. It's basically just NSMBWii with a new coat of paint and different homework answers. That being said, it's still not a bad game, nor is it unfun to play, bit honestly, it's just underwhelming as the pinnacle of the series.
@TFSned

The difference between the NSMB series and DKC Tropical Freeze is night and day. There's no reason why Mario can't have visuals, music and level design as fresh and creative. Super Mario Land 2 has more unique ideas than the entire NSMB series put together, which mainly retreads challenges from SMB3 and SMW.

I can see why you have mixed feelings about New Super Mario Bros. U, but I personally think it's an excellent game. While I was disappointed that New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe removed some things such as Boost Mode, it still retained what made it so much fun to play on the Wii U. I must admit, Nintendo merging Blue Toad and Yellow Toad into one character just to make room for Toadette was not one of their better ideas. I get wanting to welcome people who hadn't picked up a video game controller before, but that was, if you ask me, a little too hand-holdy. I remember those days my brother and I would take turns controlling Mario and the Boost Mode function on the Wii U GamePad. One other thing, I should've mentioned this, but I'm both glad and upset that the Boost Mode function is gone. The "glad" part is that I wouldn't have to do the Boost Mode-related challenges in the game's Challenge Mode. The "upset" part is when I'm playing by myself, I'd use Boost Mode to put up blocks that formed a bridge to the Star Coin. In short, New Super Mario Bros. U (including its Deluxe counterpart) is one of my favorite video games to play. Even though I spend more time playing the Switch version, I enjoy the Wii U version for what it's worth.

Honestly, this game is pretty forgettable in every sense of the imagination. It may be more original than NSMB2, but that's not really saying much considering it reuses many assets from NSMBWii while completely ignoring any of the flaws that game had (if anything, it only made them worse and more insufferable). The Switch port outright removing content and demoting Blue Toad to an extra doesn't help this game's case either, and overall I haven't touched the game in many years due to how bland and forgettable it is. Overall, I'd say stick to NSMBWii or Tropical Freeze; they both do everything this game does better and then some.

The fact that in U "Deluxe" you can't have a normal 4-player game as one of the players has to use a handicap easy-mode character is incredibly frustrating and such a stupid oversight, NSMBWii's entire iconic major feature isn't even fully present in it anymore! I'd genuinely rather have Toadette or any new characters never make it in and still force Player 1 to play as Mario than implement it all how Nintendo did in Deluxe, because what they did with new characters actually directly impacted the gameplay and for the worse, whereas forcing Player 1 to use Mario and only having Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad, and Yellow toad playable was purely cosmetic and nothing more.

@jonathanharoun5247

@@wertydeluxe1405 This is the mainstream opinion, but it's actually incorrect. NSMBU has a pretty solid World 1, World 2, and World 5, but the other worlds are filled with shockingly mediocre and sometimes genuinely garbage levels. Take the 2nd level in Frosted Glacier for example; the entire level is literally just flat terrain with the sliding penguin enemies slapped in... not a single meaningful challenge in that level. The same problem with the walking Piranha Plant level in world 6... I have no idea how the enemies in these levels are supposed to pose any kind of meaningful challenge for the player... it feels like they're just "there" without any purpose. Haunted Shipwreck is a garbage level, and the castle in world 6 literally gives up developing the level gimmick after the checkpoint and just takes you to the boss, which is quite insulting to the player. Then you have levels like 7-1 Land of Flying Blocks where there is way too much shit happening on screen for the player to mentally process and figure out what they're expected to do. A lot of levels reuse stuff from NSMBWii in worse ways. The two icicle levels in the snow world are worse than their NSMBWii counterparts. The skeleton ride level in world 6 is objectively worse than the one in Wii (it's literally the same level, except just half of it). The para-beetle level is way worse than in Wii. Are there genuinely great levels? Yes. Prickly Goombas, Fuzzy Clifftop, and Waterspout Beach are among the best levels in the NSMB series. The ghost house levels are also better than in Wii (except in the Beach and Sky world; also NSMB DS probably still has the best ghost house levels). But these levels are few and far between. NSMB Wii admittedly has some bland levels, but the quality remains fairly consistent throughout the game. It also has significantly better star coin locations; it seems like every level in NSMBU has at least one star coin hidden behind an obscure invisible wall. Overall, NSMBU is not the pinnacle of 2D Mario design that people claim it is, and probably has the sloppiest design out of the 4 games.

It's the only NSBB game I completely gave up on half-way through because, I'd seen the first half before it's copy-pasted level chunks from other Mario games (I don't care if it actually is, the fact it felt that way is problem regardless of whether it's true or not). If it had been truly portable, then I might have reconsidered. My decision to get the switch was two-fold. I was at a different place in life and had a bigger budget, and also I got interested in Wii U games by watching streamers. I almost purchased a Wii U second hand, but the same week they announced super Mario Maker 2 for the switch it solidified my decision to skip the wii u entirely for a better system that may not have the duel screen, but portability is a lot more valuable of a feature, more worth the cost.
