My dad built one of these from a pattern in popular mechanics....I think. That was in the early 70s. It was part of our camping for years. He built one for me about 15 yrs ago. I'll never go camping without it. These things are fantastic!❤
My dad made a kit box that fit in the bed of a trailer made from the rear of a 50s pickup. (These type trailers were very common in the 60s) It was big because we were a family of 6. 😊
I met a gentleman that has a similar chuck box. He said his grandfather made it when his grandfather was in his 20s. I thought it was the coolest thing. The chuck box continues to serve after 3 generations.
I'm a trucker and have been thinking of starting a channel about cooking good healthy food on the road. My first thought went to cowboys and how they cooked on the trail. This might be exactly what I need to make. Brilliant idea
Happy to help! Good luck on your build and let me know if you have any questions. I have detailed plans available on Amazon for $2.99 if you’re interested too. Link is in the description. 🤙 I appreciate the comment!
Dude... I just finished my van build out (don't worry, its all DIY and not some million dollar rig) and was looking for something like this since I still cook out side. THANK you for the cut list, big time saver. Peace and love
I'm so glad I found this video when i did. I was planning to build the REI chuck box / the first chuck box you built but I like the simplicity of this one way better. way less hardware & weight which makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely. Yep! The first round was basically the REI box. While the spice rack looked cool, I found myself more frustrated by the flip up lid. It made setting up the stove more of a challenge. Good luck on the build!
Most underrated piece of camp equipment!! My grandpa built one just like this for his family, passed it to my dad, and my brother is still using it! May good memories behind that little plywood box. I like your design. Maybe it’s my turn to make one
I use the cereal container in my potty tent. All TP goes in that. Remove the trash bag and toss. It's great for a trash can with the snapping lid. Great chuck box. Perfect size. Mine is so heavy and empty, it just stays home and is a place to organize my kitchen gear. Well done video.
Thanks Barb! I stole the cereal container idea from another channel called @boundfornowhere - love that set up though. The snap lid keeps it from spilling on bumpy roads. I appreciate the compliment!
a thought popped in my head when watching this. you can turn the hinge drop door into a magnetically removable cutting board -plastic or wood. removable for cleaning of course
Make a video about what and how you cook using the Lodge pot and lid. You could do a whole series of your most frequently made recipes. Love the video, short and to the point.
Check the Lodge L5OGH3 7" Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Fajita Skillet. It should be able to nest in or under your dutch oven. Also, I love chuck boxes rather than the soulless Milwaukee Packout boxes all over YT. In the Boy Scouts, there was an arms-race in District Troops' chuck box setups.
This is amazing. Have almost the exact Coleman stove and right now all gear is in 2-3 different bins. Got a saw and some wood. Might be a summer project! thanks for the great video.
Thank you! Yes, I've definitely been in the plastic bin black hole before too. This thing makes cooking so much more enjoyable. Good luck on the build!
Just saw this posted on Ovrlnd's facebook. Awesome setup, I definitely need to build something similar. Right now I don't really have a system and my kitchen gear is constantly scattered in different bins. Thanks for the ideas
Nice video. Used one in Boy Scouts back in the day. But it was always too big and took 2 people to carry it around. I like your take on scaling it down to be more manageable. If you are in the Georgia area and need a work shop for a project hit me up. Keep on trucking!
We had these but about 3 times as heavy and handled with 1/10th of the care, lol. I’m sure this would work great as a mature adult who isn’t going to leave dirty dishes in the thing for weeks at a time, but oh boy I have terrible memories of these.
Cool chuck box! Love the little Dutch oven. We have a larger one because our kids used to camp with us and bring their friends, but now that we are empty nesters, we really need to downsize! We actually live about 35 minutes from the Lodge factory and their factory outlet store.
Thank you! That totally makes sense. I'd say anymore than two people and I'd have to go with a larger Dutch too. Sheww hopefully you can score a deal at the outlet 🤙
I built a generic one from Filson's website. It was clunky. Built an even bigger one for my bro-in-law who has a family, then built a stripped down one from my imagination and it's almost exactly yours
Dang man, I have just been using a cardboard box lol This is freakign awesome! Thanks for sharing this, much appreciated!! Stoked I'm in before you hit 1k subs! keep up the good work! only a few more to go.
I saw one that had a second box that slipped over the chuck box that was basically just the legs and was the table you sat the chuck box on top of so you didn't need a table 😀
Coat the box with System Three WR-LPU with crosslinker. It comes in basic colors and clear. It will make it absolutely waterproof. Very good choices on the spices.
I’m glad you asked. I actually made a video about it. :) What I Eat While Camping Off-Grid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VmvYiZcTx3g.html
Thanks! I purchased it from OVRLND Campers out of flagstaff. This video is actually part of a series about the camper. Here’s a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H9OU7nP56TE.htmlsi=s-NSC-VYJW1kxg05
Great video and the chuck box is fantastic. I'm also loving my OVRLND Camper. Btw... I've been through a few different camp stoves and I keep coming back to the same stove you have. It's lightweight, fairly thin, the handle is nice, and it always just works... And mine has taken a beating. How are you disposing of the green bottles
Thank you! Dude the OVRLND camper kicks ass and 100% love the classic Coleman. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I save up the bottles and hit the hazardous waste station. It's a pain. I'm going to get a small refillable tank eventually.
1:38 - RIGHT to LEFT actually.. LOL... also.. recommend upping your game on the spice dept.. mcCormick might be widely available.. but most of it is pretty bad quality.
The instant I see somebody holding a lavalier mic, the credibility goes right out the window. It's got a clip... for clipping. I still like your box though.
Haha jeeze, that's a strong reaction. But I hear you though. I actually ended up addressing that in the very next video because a cinematographer friend made a comment about it too
Oh, so you call it the “Chuck Box” huh? Chuck boxes have been around in Scouting long before you were born dude! Nice try at attempting to be an innovator! 😂
Haha oh for sure. A very long history in scouting. And before chuck boxes there were chuck wagons. Definitely don’t view myself as an innovator. Just my take on one.
