Any yarn that you are happy with and holds together is a good yarn!!! I add string, ribbon, or crocheted cord to my orifice hooks and have it looped around the front upright on the mother-of-all, making sure it is long enough to reach the orifice for threading

Thank you so much for sharing your joy of spinning. It looks so peaceful and so wonderful that it makes you happy. I think it is so smart to knit chair socks. I think I might be able to crochet some but I couldn't get the hang of knitting. I love that you share what is going on with your yard. I am planning on working on my garden this year. Blessings from Northeastern Missouri.

I love your mom's square in a square quilt. I think you should figure out a pattern and then do it with us. I've tried to sketch it out. We're getting ready to move and I can't wait to get to the new place and start a new quilt project and get the spinning wheel out. Love watching you do what you do.

So great to see you are back at your wheel. Love your colours. After spinning for 40+ years I can’t spin thick any more and the colours blend more as the specks of colour are so much smaller. Spinning, knitting, sewing and gardening are such a help during a pandemic. Only trouble is it is very hot and humid here so I need to crash on the lime green sofa. Keep up the great podcasts Kate.

How beautiful to see you spin on your lovely wheel, Kate! Spinning is also on my “must get back to” list… I have far more fibre than I need to have (oh, let’s not go there! I love it all)! One day. My dear Lendrum wheel sits beside me while I knit, or (very occasionally) weave… waiting patiently. Having a sweet time on the Lime Green Sofa.

Well that has brought back memories ladies. I used to wind the wool with it wrapped over my knees ( not easy) then wound with wool on the back of a chair. Love the colour way of the wool. Such a hoot about Agnes and dressing up. My grandson used to go to his kindergarten in slippers some days, teddy bear outfit other days and so on ……and nobody minded ( sure he wasn’t the only child dressed up). He used to have a few days of favourite dressing up outfits and then change to something else he had picked for the next few days. Such memories you have brought back on that as well - thank you 🐱

Love your idea of chair socks....I used my 2 yr old's pair of socks for my ironing board, which left scuffs every time I used it on the flooring...it did the trick, but now, 32 years later, they are still on my ironing board's legs! Thank you for all your marvelous ideas, Kate!!

Oh Kate this video is so full of memories of my childhood growing up in the 50's in England. There was a time when wool could only be purchased in skeins wasn't there? I have a wonderful book that I read to my resident's in the hostel I worked at as a Diversional Therapist. It is called Twenties Child by Ivy V Arney. Of course there are few of that vintage left now. However, some of the Items mentioned in the book: Laundry Day, Ironing Day, Cleaning Day etc including hobbies that where popular at the time. It mentions unwed couples in the "front room" on a Sunday afternoon winding wool in exactly the way you and Anna did. I'm also reminded of another book that states " why we don't talk to each other anymore" may be attributed to the fact we don't "do the washing up". One person washing and other drying the dishes. Also winding wool was mentioned in that book too. Can't find the book atm. Thanks for the video Kate. Stay safe. ❤

I’ve recently ‘come across’ your lovely videos. I’m from South Australia and your home and garden is beautiful and so different from where I live. It makes feel so happy and relaxed watching you. It reminds me of being with my Mum - and I’m 76 - . I used to hold the yarn for Mum when I was a child. I haven’t seen anyone do that since! What lovely memories you bring back to me. Thank you and your lovely family for being so ‘homely’, friendly and bringing some happiness to so many people.

When I see you, Kate, spinning the wool and winding the yarn, I think: I must learn to spinn. I have the spinningwheel from my mother. She died 22 years ago and I got the spinningwheel after my father died 2 years ago. I have a sheep, Laine, and every year I have a lot of wool. I felt a little with the wool, but making yarn is maybe easier. Maybe it is even time to knit socks for chairs. They are so funny. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

Hi Kate and Anna I'm watching this gorgeous video early Monday morning, and it has helped me calm down. I've been in contact with someone who tested positive last week and I'm doing daily tests. I was sure it would show positive, but negative again this morning. I'm scared to do the tests and to look at the results, so I needed to calm down and be comforted by you spinning and listening to you and Anna chat. How lovely. Thankyou both so much. I'm so pleased to have 'landed in your place' today. Sue xx

When you mentioned children putting underpants on their heads it reminded me of when my brother and sister and I were young children we put underpants on our heads because we had seen the astronauts in space suits from the Apollo missions around 1968 or 1969. I guess that underpants worked as space helmets, lol.

Oh, Kate, you brought me back to my childhood, and I think I am your age😍. I grew up in a small village, we had sheep, and all stages of making, colouring, and spinning (although different way of spinning) are memories I will cherish forever Also, I do refuse to buy a ball winder - when my kids were small, I used them. And now I just put the skein on my feet - great exercise for the core muscles. Anna and you are such a wonderful team! I am going to knit some chair socks too!

Way back in the late 70’s the community college that I was going to had a fiber arts certificate program where I took spinning, dying, weaving etc. loved every bit of it. At the end I was 7 months pregnant with my first child so didn’t get to finish the last class. Still have my ashford wheel, table top loom and an 8 harness loom. The 8 harness I bought in my 40’s and because of life have not even used it yet! I’m 67 now and trying to moving forward to get it set up. But I have never stopped quilting or seeing through my 3 children. Loved watching you spin. Might just have to get that wheel out. I also still have a big stash of all fiber stuff.

Dear Kate, what a lovely video. Whenever I see you spinning, I'd love to get myself a spinning wheel and try it out. It looks so comfy, meditating and interesting. I often see spinning wheel on second hand websites, but even If I would get one, I would not know where to start. I actually have nobody in the family with spinning as a hobby. My mom sews and I loved sitting next to her while she was mending and I was sewing dolls clothes and diapers - or what my 4 to 6 year old brain thought I would do. My Mom kept some of those and looking at those now always makes me giggle. Actually it's just fabric scraps - maybe in the shape of a diaper with random (!) stitches on. All "sewn" by hand. Usually with yarn, because sewing thread was too thin 🤣 Regards Stephanie

This was delightful to watch. It reminds me of me and my mother-in-law, I loved her so...goodness it's her birthday today, she would be 105! Anyway, I would sit and listen to her stories about the time she was growing up and the hardships during the war times and the changes in society and on and on. Anna, remember her stories so you can pass them on to the family, they are a treasure. And what a great thing to have this kind of relationship with your husbands' mother. (this is Nancy, not David)

I used to child sit for my neighbors and part of our “schedule” of things to do was a long walk through our neighborhood full of beautiful Victorian houses. And the little one always wanted to dress up for our walks. The things she would come up with amused the neighbors endlessly and the people driving by as well. I would often wear a cape and/or a hat or something to participate.🦋

Good afternoon Kate, I am so enjoying your channel and this particular episode resonated with me on so many levels. In my 60th year I too decided to make a list of things to mark the occasion - it was really fun to try new things one of which was spinning and like you I love it. The dress up tales reminded me of a time when my daughter was 6 and we were working in the yard in mid-Dec and quite filthy. We were off to see the Nutcracker that afternoon, so I said to her "We should go get cleaned up and a dressed up for the ballet." She looked at me askance and said "Mom i don't think any thing in my dress up box will fit you but I guess I could let wear my tiara!" Again thank you for such lovely visits on the lime green couch and with all of those wonderful cats.

My black cat loved sitting on my lap while I was spinning. Once in a while, she was interested in the string being produced, and there were several times, one of her whiskers would get twisted into the thread, and I constantly watched out for her whiskers. It must have pinched her hard, but it did not keep her from sitting in my lap during knitting or spinning. I have seen kitty paw chair socks. And am restoring a directors folding chair, I found on the "Sperrmüll" where the wood and frame are perfectly in working condition. I will sew a new seat and backrest and additional cushions for this chair and want to make those Kitty paw socks for it to prevent it from damaging the laminate floor.

We knitted them from when we were about 10 years old until we were 15 or so years old. ( we are now in our 70’s!). Your wool colour mix was lovely. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe..Love N hugs…Dottie xx

Oh, Kate, you really are an amazing person. You can do anything and everything having to do with needles, thread, and fabric....I really am in amazement. I love your home...all the color and creativity and the natural beauty outside with your garden and just where you live! The idea of socks for chairs is genius and much more fun that other solutions. .

This brought back memories of my childhood. Started with raw wool, washed, carded, spun into yarn and used for weaving with my dear grandmother. Thank you, Kate and Anna.

LOVING Anna the swift! You can tell she’s already getting the hang of ducking and weaving! That wool is SO gorgeous! I’m always knitting rainbow colours because they make me so happy! Speaking of which, how is your rainbow….cardi? No, I think it was a vest, correct? I have a feeling Anna will be knitting after her first quilt. :) I almost bought a spinning wheel about 4 years ago and I know in the next few years I’ll be buying one - everything about spinning appeals to me. I am a prolific knitter and what I love about you is that you always make it not only ok NOT to spin perfectly, but you make it almost a challenge - as if 'why would you want perfect wool....?'! :) I’ve only spun on a Ladybug and I did like that it was a bit more compact - although I know Ashford are some of the best - seeing the factory must have been AMAZING! I love the fact that we’re talking CHAIR SOCKS!!!! Truly - what can be better?!!! Not only do they save your floors, but they stop the dreaded NOISE! Thank you as always, you have no idea what your videos do for me..... :) xxx

I remember holding wool for my mom as she wound the wool into a ball of yarn. Happy memories. She tried to teach me to knit and crochet. Just can't or don't want to learn. I sew and quilt however. Your home and videos are so peaceful and relaxing in this troubled time. Anna is so precious. You are blessed.💟

I absolutely loved the first few minutes with the different views of your house absolutely drenched in colour. And that yarn! I love the thick and thin handmade look. Thanks for a great video.

home from hospital but love snuggling on the lime green sofa watching your adventures.... the hours I spent as a child holding my hands up while granny wound the skeins of wool for winding the wool into balls for knitting me cable knit jumpers for school... you have inspired me to plow on with the pinwheel quilt which I had put to one side... random schizophrenic colour ways. I am reminded how Oliver cat used to jump on my lap and get in the way of my stitching.. he used to love to steal bobbins of thread and play with them. he used to jump

What a lovely video Kate. It was nice to see you back at your spinning wheel. You spoke of your Snowdrops blooming. My gardens are still sleeping, March came in like a lamb so I guess it will go out like a lion. Do take care Kate and Anna and enjoy your week.

I hadn't realized that so much time has gone by since we watched you spin. I used to help my mom wind her yarns. Fond memories. And you took us out in the garden too. I've missed being in the garden. Our daffodils are in bloom now and the grape hyathants are sticking their heads above the green. Thank you for the gentle time this evening. Have a great week, Kate.

Not knowing at all what to expect today I suddenly sat watching you winding a ball while I was winding a ball of yarn. That was very meta and very lovely to have your company. As I have no lovely Anna I had to use my feet for duck and wave 😀 Love from the Swedish West Coast

What a beautiful video. I remember doing some of what Anna did, for my mom. She must have done a bit of handy work back in the day. I know how to do a little crocheting, knitting, embroidery, etc. and I vaguely remember her teaching me. Mostly sewing. I love your quilts, and keep threatening to start making something similar. I love your colors, your loving ways, and your whimsy. Thanks for posting all you do... I look forward to it.

Hi Katie. This video made me laugh, because I’ve just finished making socks for my table and chairs in our kitchen. I crocheted them, using oddments of cotton yarn I had left over from making the grandchildren crocheted fruit and veg for their play kitchens. Your chair socks look lovely, and it’s a great way to add some pops of colour, and have fun too! Thanks for sharing.

Thank you once again, just love getting up on Mondays to the TLHH and sitting in my arm chair eating my fruit and yoghurt and slowly starting my day with you Kate and Cat Rita. This last week I have made a quilt and bound 3 others that have been sitting for about 3 years waiting for their binding, they are eye spy quilts for charity, think they will go to the special school, 1 all things girly, 1 all boy sports and another healthy foods and not so healthy foods, the children have quiet time after lunch and they lie on the floor and a couple of years ago I came up with the idea of having quilts for them to snuggle under in winter. The teachers said the children really relax quickly with their quilts but also enjoy looking for the different things in the eye spy ones. I am enjoying being back in my sewing room after 2years of hardly doing anything but now my health is slowly improving and we have retired from fostering after nearly 40 years of fostering about 70children in that time. No more phone calls demanding attention for all sorts of things from dealing with courts, doctors, specialists, school issues and arranging access, somedays the phone dosen't ring at all, yesterday visited our last child, now an adult, in his supported accommodation, and he made me a lovely coffee, his careers are mostly lovely Indian young men who keep him on track. Thankyou and Anna for your ball rolling, I can remember holding the scain for my mother and Grandma. Blessings from down under, sorry no cooking this weekend.

I've seen your most recent spinning after you moved the spinning wheel into the porch area. That was a good move and it's in a much better place now.
