We follow trauma cleaners as they sanitise and clear a property where a man died but was not discovered for weeks.

It’s usually the stench that prompts neighbours to call police.
It’s unexpected, metallic, rotting. It coats the inside of your mouth, revisiting you hours later.
It has been three weeks since Arthur* sat on his bed, his feet planted next to his bedside table where his wristwatch and bedside clock ticked away, then slumped over and drew his last breath.
As he lay there, curled over, the plums and banana he had laid out to eat shrank and grew mould.
His chequered handkerchiefs, blue slacks and white socks blew on a clothes line in the wind in his backyard. The dishes in the sink went unwashed and the days on the calendar he had been crossing off remained untouched.
The 89-year-old died in March and for three weeks, his home became his tomb.

I had the horrific experience of finding my dad 3 weeks after he had passed. He was laying in his bed with a heater on full. It's a sight and smell that will always live with me. I was left with the cleanup operation of his body fluids, the skin and hair were stuck to the pillow and mattress. I had to cut out the floorboards it was so bad. Strange as it may sound, I'm proud I cleaned up after him. RIP Dad.

They’re responsible for cleaning up anything regarding his death separate. Anything spoiled with bodily fluids etc has to be disposed differently than just every day things to clear house. The bags of trash with bodily fluids has to be disposed in a certain way so not to contaminate anything per strict regulations.. The remainder of the trash like carpet can be disposed as any other homes trash if preparing it for sale etc.

I'm a retired Justice of the Peace here in Texas. Part of my duties was to go and investigate unattended deaths. One of the things that Sheriff's Deputies always told me was the smell was bad. But I couldn't smell it at all. I have a birth defect where all of the sinuses in my head and face didn't develop as I was born at 25 weeks. One of the last death investigations I had was a gentleman who passed in his bed, in the middle of summer here in Texas. I estimated he had been dead for at least 6 weeks. The deputies couldn't believe I went into the house without any sort of mask on to cover the smell. I can't smell lots of things that people say smell badly. I can't smell skunk, natural gas, dead people, and lots of different kinds of flowers. There are some things that I can smell... Pizza, Gardenias (which smell REALLY bad to me). But I really believe my birth defect was a blessing from God that allowed me to perform my duties in caring for the deceased and their families.

@@toyoscio yes... It was really a very sad sight. Here was a man laying in his bed with most of his bodily fluids completely gone with his skin stretched taut over his bones. If I close my eyes I can still see him. What was really sad was his family... I asked them when the last time any of them had seen him and they told me on July 4th. When I saw him it was the first week of September. None of them had bothered to see him that whole time. But they were like cockroaches when it came time to try to collect things from his estate, like his car and other things. So very sad.

@@BenEBrady If I didn't stink-up my possessions, they be clawing over them. Next they'd be liquidating my stock shares and emptying my bank account. If I knew when I'd expire, I'd donate all my money to an animal shelter. I've always been nice to relatives and have reached-out many times only to be ignored, exploited, etc.... I'm adopted, and my adoptive sister is now schmoozing with half-brothers she researched and found, and I'm chopped liver. My female cousins (not blood relatives) only surface at funerals and to split estates. Some people just have rotten relatives and there's nothing you can do about it.

That a person can outlive their loved ones, & then it's very difficult to make strong connections with others nowadays. This man might have been an extremely generous, & kind person. Who had nobody who cared about him when he died? It would be nice IF, we all took a moment out of our busy lives. To see someone we know is alone, & bring them something they like occasionally, & spent 15 minutes speaking with them. WE, could make them feel wonderful, & not give-up much to do it. My neighbor died in the apt below mine. He lived on his own. I had previously called an ambulance for him when he took a fall in his kitchen while I was outside and heard him groaning. Just 9 days later, he died just sitting in his chair. Fortunately, his sister visited him that very same day and discovered him deceased. My other neighbour and I went to help her as she was hysterically crying. Strangely enough he looked really peaceful. But I dread to think what would have happened if nobody had discovered him even for a week because there was a portable heater at his feet pumping warm air right at him. He was a good guy. As your family ages you will all learn that elderly care is unaffordable & it will usyally only be one family member to step up. Parents are never prepared - debt not paid & no funeral coverage. They were too overwhelmrd & embarrassed in life to ask for help When they pass away the resr of your family will be at your door to split whats left. Youll be left in debt & broken & somewhat resentful Many families are like this. My parents spent their last five years with me at my apartment I spent my retirement on their care & debt Their 45 yrsr old neice still lives in their house & she just never had time to come over & say goodbye even when i cslled her to do it for them They paid her wsy yhroigh college * never workrd or paif her own way or even had her own place She stole their money their livlihood and their soles I just lost my house in foreclosure I sleep well at night My family is not unique. Sad fact in the case of Swedish "so called" well fare. Out of some 240 + annual deaths in homes, 25% (one quarter) of them lay forgotten and unnoticed for periods of 1,5 months. We just had an extreme case of an elderly man laying forgotten for 3 1/2 YEARS! His case is not exceptional. The more this occurs, the more it is a reminder something is wrong with the society allowing it to happen.

I am a hospice nurse and even a few hours after death or immediately, especially if they release their bowels or have an ostomy or significant wounds, the smell is unimaginable. There are times when I will spray perfume into my nose before going to do care or postmortem care. I also always carry around Vicks to rub into my nose. Though I wasn’t a hospice nurse, in my years in Home Healthcare, I had lots of dying patients and I wouldn’t trade a minute of it for anything. I can only hope my patients felt as blessed as they blessed me. May God continue to bless your work.

RIP Arthur. And thanks to the amazing work of these people that did such a good job cleaning everything up and being so respectful. Living alone and dieing alone isn't sad. What is sad is being around losers that make you feel alone and don't care about you. I'm 28 and I live alone. I also died in this bed I am sitting on right now (massive blood haemorrhage in 2019) but I came back to life and left hospital 2 days later to go..you guessed it..home. I'd rather live like I am now than be around some jerk that ignores me and makes me feel alone like I was before I started living alone. Doesn't mean I don't like people, plenty of people like me. Just i don't waste my time on people. Plenty of people live alone. It's not always bad. Being around the wrong people and being made to feel alone and being abandoned is bad. If the world was filled with more kind people so many people wouldn't die alone like so many elderly people do. Maybe if people pulled their heads out of their own butts and their tiny lives and stopped worrying about pointless stuff in their own little worlds and started caring and helping others so many elderly people wouldn't have to spend their last moments alone. Old people just want to be loved and respected and felt they are cared about. Same as anyone else. Yet most of the time they are forgotten.

The human body, and the bodies of most mammals are composed of over 75% water. That is also the reason why small, high velocity rifle bullets can do catastrophic damage on a deer or elk upon impact. It is called hydrostatic shock. The projectile induces a bomb-like explosion amplified by the water content of the target's body. All of that water have to go somewhere upon cessation of biological life.

So, they are knowledgeable in the decomposing body and ALL that goes with dying from fluids to dealing with all those fluids.. getting them out of sooooo many different surfaces from carpet, wood, cement and tiles... wow! When I was stationed in Naples, Italy back in the late 1980s, I decided to take a walk off base. Near the base, I ran into what I tell people is like an "invisible brick wall." The smell is so powerful! On the side of a building, near the back of it was a bloated and now black animal. I couldn't even tell what it was and glimpsed at it for only a few seconds. It looked like a swollen barrel with four legs sticking straight up. Even though I was approximately 1000 feet away, the smell was indescribable and incredible! Needless to say, I did an about face and went back the other way! Parts of the city were unkept and pretty bad back then. Even over 30 years later, I remember the incident. I hope I never smell it again.

But I do have family close by and my husband of 40 years is here too. I guess the best thing to do is pray for you, I hope you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, so at least your days after your demise are promised to be devoid of sickness, disease, and death. God bless you sir, you’ll never be alone with Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit is imparted to you to live inside you.

She found only a skeleton in the bathtub that looked like it was wearing a wig. The tub was full to the top of all of the bodily fluids. Turns out the lady had killed herself weeks earlier by swallowing a bottle of barbiturates. They showed EVERYTHING on that show. It was truly disgusting but also very sad.
