just do it, practice your software, Illustrator, photoshop, learn color sceience and how they affect brand identity, in terms of security, reliability and integrity, those will come in handy. Learn how font works like Typefaces and how they match other stuff and lastly create mockup branding in different category of businesses use those as portfolio on what you can do and you're good to go. Keep in mind though freelancing as a graphic designer is not an easy task, there's a lot of competition but it doesn't mean it's not doable.
