A day of me being a PhD student My survey link: essex.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/fo... Come follow me! Instagram: / jammi.dodger Twitter: / jammi_dodger94 Email: jamieraines@hotmail.com
This video is so different from your regular videos, but I like it. It’s very technological, sophisticated and professional. I like this side of you just as much as the fun side.
Life of a PhD Student: *makes to-do list* *overestimates how many hours are in a day* *leaves half the list unfinished* I'm glad to know there are other PhD students doing it too! :)
OMG I can't believe we are making similar topics!!! But I'm not phd, here in Russia it's bachelor degree (diploma), and I also write it about LGBT+ community well-being and trans people as well! I'm so happy that my university and professors are open-minded to help me with it and accept the topic, because it's not so easy and safe to discuss such topics in public & in written form.
Thanks for the video and I love that you love numbers (mathematician turned computer scientist here). I started my PhD 3 weeks ago, so I'm still in the "I don't know what I'm doing phase", reading loads of articles, trying to figure out where to start on my research, and writing a research proposal to outline what I plan on doing in the next 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years etc 😅 I can't wait to be in a place where I know what I need to be doing and by when. My supervisor wants me to publish at least 3 articles while I'm doing my PhD and at the moment, I don't even know how to go about doing that 😂
Thanks for the motivation!! 😀 I’m in the middle of completing my diploma so I can go to University. I’ve been slacking so badly but I really needed this! Would love you to do more of this content!!
i love almost all of your videos and this one did not disappoint, even though it was vastly different than your usual ones. i found it quite interesting to hear about your day and your research, etc. and not gonna lie, it’s just cool watching you geek out about spreadsheets
Watching this whilst approaching the final month before my Masters dissertation is due is actually very calming. Got my week all planned out and contacted my supervisor because this reminded me I hadn't. So thanks for that and good luck with it all.
Ah this video was everything I wanted, I posted before about how I wish you'd discuss more about your PhD and ahhh this was amazing, it made me feel a lot less alone day to day in my research - its such a strange 'job' we do! V isolating and all over the place! I'm in my first year of my PhD atm and hoping I get to bump into you and Shaaba at Vidcon, that would be the highlight of my weekend! I bought and moved house in my first term before xmas and your videos were honestly a lifeline, I packed and unpacked to your vlogs of the both of you moving :)
I would love to do a phd. Funding is an issue however. Want to look into “transcending the work place; a study of transgender individual in the workplace.” Focusing on the different perspectives of pre and post transition. Looking forward to your finished thesis...I believe you said you would publish for us to read in a previous video. (Might be wrong). Great video as always
i liked seeing how your experiences are similar or different from mine, it was cool to get a small window into this part of your life right now. also you geeking out about data is amazing
I love how passionate you are about your subject Jamie! You're such an inspiration and you're going to go so far with your positive attitude - p.s your survey was ace, hope you get the results that you want from it :))
Bloody hell! Sounds like you're a very busy student at the moment. Completed your survey btw. Some questions were hard to complete, but that could be one of the benefits when it comes down to analysing the data
Wow... it sounds like you’re on par for an excellent PhD thesis paper!! GREAT JOB!! I’d be VERY interested in reading your paper when you finish it... and I think another girlfriend (who did her PhD in Psychology at Harvard)!would be interested in reading it also!! Keep going, you’re almost done!!
Hahah phd student in biomedical sciences here and i totally relate!! Especially the not getting as much writing done as you had hoped! 😂 and I love tidying up spreadsheets too!! Good luck with everything Jamie!!
That was super interesting Jamie! Loved finding out more about your PhD! I’m currently a second year undergrad (Zoology down at the uni of Southampton!) with no idea if I want to do further study afterwards or not. I guess I’ll see how the third year dissertation goes and go from there...
Loved this video. I plan on being a PhD student in the future as well. Thank you for giving me some insight and I hope to see more content like this. :D
This is really interesting and I’m enjoying the different style of video. I’m actually thinking about going into physiology for DID and systems, that or some form of biomedical chemistry.
This is super helpful for me, actually, since I plan on pursuing a PhD myself! It won't be the same major, obviously, but biology PhDs are very similar from what I've heard, doing research projects and whatnot! So this is very helpful in helping me figure out how I might go about things!
I’m a master’s level student, this was actually so helpful for me! Inspired me to get into Monday work after being sick all weekend. Also reminded me I very very much need to update my literature review!
I am currently in a Masters programme at the moment, and am going to start my PhD next year. Thank you so much for doing this video, I really enjoyed it! I have been toying with the idea of moving to a physical journal for all my notes, I tend to keep my notes and to do lists on my computer, but I think there could be benefits to switching it up.
Aw this was great! Sometimes I miss being a student. I don't envy anyone getting through the mountain that is a PhD, although I did think about doing one after my masters which clearly was a crazy thought! haha. You're doing brilliantly though!
This was nice and interesting to watch. I'm trying to finish my masters thesis and I could relate to a lot of things in your experience as a PhD student. 8:04 was so relatable and in general it was fun to see all these little every day things in your life, and student life. I'm not sure if you've done an update on your PhD studies in your more recent videos ( I tried to look but didn't find), but it would be nice to hear how it's all going at the moment :)
this was so interesting! i'm in the middle of doing my psych undergrad dissertation at the minute (on understanding how trans people talk about body image online) and hoping to go on to do a PhD in psychology eventually so it's great to see what that looks like on a daily basis
I filled out the survey and it was really well done! I’m also a psychology student, just still in undergrad and it was fun to see what I have to look forward to as I get into my upper years and into graduate school
Really liked this video! I just started writing my dissertation in philosophy. I'm german and doing it in Germany so I'm not doing a PhD program where you have to do any exams or attend seminars or stuff like that, just writing the dissertation, and I really like seeing how other people work on things (somehow) similar to what I do! It's also nice to see that I'm not alone with the breaks for crying and taking naps. xD
I love seeing this! I’m planning on completing a Ph.D. in the U.S. on Mexican history, focusing on gender and sexuality in the 20th century. But it’s always exciting to see other people’s workload and process!
Oh gosh, just had massive flashbacks to my PhD... I'm glad it's over, it was a hard time. BUT now I look back at it and only remember the good times (I did my PhD in Lancaster and am now living in Germany again, I do miss my friends there quite a lot). Good luck with everything!
This was super informative! I'm a psychology undergrad and I've been thinking about doing a PhD for a while but I don't know what I want to specialise in
I'm doing year twelve psych right now because you inspired me when you first talked about your uni psych career and what you wanted to research, also we're both named Jamie except Jamie's my birth and its unisex so Imma keep it especially since u c it as masc

Great video man! You'll be finished the PhD in no time!
This was really interesting! Also motivating, I'm in the last semester of my environmental engineering undergrad & have been feeling generally bogged down about everything I have to do haha
I'm currently working on my bachelor's thesis. Hoping to get my study online within the next week, which will be accessible to the United States. I am excited but also super nervous about the next few weeks!
You sure have a lot of "spuds" who have or are working toward higher degrees. It's especially interesting that many are in psychology! I, too, have a PhD in psychology (developmental). It's different in the US. After 4 years to get a BS in psychology, I entered a PhD program. It took me *9* years to complete the PhD (5 yrs of classes, 4 yrs dissertation)! It took so long partly because I had 2 little kids (my daughter was 6 months old when I started & my son was born in my 2nd year) and I worked, first as a teaching assistant, then as a lecturer, 50-75% time while doing classes & my research. I also had depression issues, especially during one year after completing my classes, when I didn't get much done. I eventually worked doing research at a university, mostly analyzing data. I enjoyed it a lot, and miss it now that I'm retired. It makes me smile that you're a psych PhD!
PhD student here too, currently taking a midnight break from papers to watch my favorite trans icon on RU-vid vlogging about the grad life :) Oh, and I filled out your survey too! Looks like you'll be collecting tons of thorough data for your research! Good luck!!
just wanted to say thank you for putting your content out! It's super helpful (trans and not trans stuff) and you're brilliant, so yeah you're epic! btw, this video was super cool and interesting?!
Thanks Jamie, it was nice to learn a little bit more about your work. I have been thinking about doing a PHD, but I don't know... the one I have found which is perfect for me needs an MA in something my MA isn't in! So I don't know if I should email them and see if there is another option or to do the second MA with my own money then apply for the PHD. Studenting is hard. xx
Watching this inspired me to continue editing my youtube video - got the footage reasonably cut and the sound all sorted! I've got my BS in Art Education as well as my teaching license, so that's fun. No edTPA in a Masters (that I know of) but that wasn't quite a picnic. I feel ya
I’m currently getting an associate in computer science, but I’m an English tutor on campus and as such I’m constantly surrounded by research and such. It’s heaven for me. Doctorate degrees seem like so much work but they seem like my dream come true. I hope I get a good job so I can be a student forever!
I did my master dissertation in psychology (in Germany) last year and I loved this video, I could relate so much, especially about the analysis, I'M A STATISTICS NERD! so so happy for you that you found your hypothesised results. if you publish your research, would you post about it? I'd be so interested to read it!
When i watching this vid, i am myself on my assignment. Yes it was hectic and i wish i could go to sleep now but i can't as i need to submit it by this thursday. You are young and you're lucky to have an opportunity to do your phd at this age. I am old or i shall say matured haha.... my story is lengthly so now only i have a chance to complete my first stage of study besides the secondary school things. Im doing my executive diploma in counselling at my local uni. Well jamie... keep it up. BTW i have done your survey
Insightful video. Just curious to know if you use any biosignal tools (EEG, ECG, EOG, EMG) for arousal data collection?

Hey man, great quality video!! Can I ask for some advice on Vlogging for PhDs? I'm starting a channel and am wondering if you have any tips? Thanks a million!!
I don’t do any courses as in-depth as your PHD but I’ve completed a couple of courses through the skills network which covers so many different courses from Psycology, understanding autism, understanding Dementia to accounting, mental health and loads more. You can either do it paper form, online or a bit of both. You do it at home and you get set dates of when each section of the course needs to be completed by. Very interesting but sometimes not mentally challenging as all the info is in the booklets given and you just need to retract the right info and put into your own words. I’m hoping to start a level 2/3 training course for youth work trading for the National Youth Agency part of my new job which 1 of my sessions will be working with the LGBTQ youth group which I can’t wait to complete.
Hi, I think when you ask if our parents/friends usually used correct pronouns/name maybe you can separate them. I mean my friends do but not my parents so i don't how to answer. Sorry if what i said isn't clear English is not my native language.
My PhD was like... 10 hours in a chem lab, followed by 4-5 hours of number crunching at home. In addition to all the exams at my first and second year; I remember that time sleeping just some 3-4 hours a day, max. Weekends were like... What is a weekend? Oh, but the sampling aboard research vessel was fun.
Computer engineering/science undergrad. It can be grueling lol. On my senior year now and it’s just good to know there’s light at the end of the tunnel
There really needs to be a don’t know/not applicable/other answer on all of these questions (and no surprise NOT questions making us switch from agreeing to disagreeing and back on those lists. It’s hard enough to remember which end is which as it is.)
I did the thing! Had to do your survey via FireFox 'cause Explorer pooped itself, as it does. I can see what you mean w/ enby inclusion, a few q's were awkwardly binary lol
"I look at numbers, I write and have meetings... and sometimes I cry": look, it me! (I'm also a phd in psych :) but I'm more in compared/experimental psych)
Jamie I am wondering do you think you will be possible to have captions added to your videos in the future (sorry my words are a big jumbled I am very brainfoggy today)
Just so you know, this video is making me feel that I need to work on my thesis.. I'm just at the starting stages of it all, so I'm nose-deep in research. I understand how you feel.
I'm just finishing my Masters in Clinical Psychology. Can you tell us what you think you will do when you've finished your PhD? Are you interested in a Post-Doc? Or what other paths do you see? Thanks :)
you kept saying you hope this wasn't boring and it absolutely wasn't, im studying psych but im an undergrad and im considering grad school so i really liked seeing what you do every day because i have absolutely no idea what grad school even consists of lmao
Ok i want to ask, i am quite young so i have no idea how university works, do you do your undergraduate first and once you finish that can you go straight to your phd. If the undergraduate takes 4 years and phd takes 4 then it would be 8 years altogether right?
I applied for (and got accepted into) PhD program in the uk 10 years ago but in the end I decided not starting it and not regretting any bit of it. I think the reason is because I dun like my topic at all and studying for the PhD was just a way to escape from the reality. I dun even understand why I wanna study information management! 10 years later I got another master in a completely different field (cultural anthropology) and I so wanna do a PhD on it - however right now the opportunity cost would be so expensive.......
