Considering that these habits are only three hundred years in the past, gosh, it does make someone grateful, right? And it also helps explain the astonishing lack of respect for human life that's so often the topic here. If life is as doubtful as it was for these pirates, it would cheapen life altogether, and urge them to take, seize, make war, and generally run amok all the more. I'm so glad you covered this subject as I've often wondered and shudded at the practices at the time. As a disabled and chronically ill person and a qualified Aromatherapyist and Herbalologyist I am always using both and have three medicine chests that mean more to me that gold because they do work. If I had been a Pirate Ships Surgeon I would have reccommended both fruit and herbs in their diet as weight for weight herbs and wild herbs have more goodness in them as fruit of vegatables and has more healing actions and properties to aid a speedy recovery. 😊⚓⛵❤🌿🌼
Another great video! I didn't notice this new channel until today, ended up binging the lot. Also subbed. One thing though, I hate to tell you but... Modern medicine does indeed still use cauterising, leeches and maggot therapy. In fact the cauterising is so common it is basically used on a small scale in almost every surgery. There are special cauterising scalpel and laser cutter tools used to control blood loss. Admittedly nobody is heating an axe up over a fire and using it to close a wound but it is definitely still used. The leeches are used to promote blood flow, relieving congested veins, preventing blood clots, and ultimately improving surgical outcomes. The especially bred sterile maggots are used for wound care (eating dead flesh, cleaning the wound), debridement, antibiotic resistant infections in wounds, chronic wounds, osteomyelitis. They are also used by vets for horse wound care.
