I'm sharing another day in the life of a professor. On Mondays, I don't have to teach so it's mostly an administrative and planning day for me. Let me know what aspects of life as a professor are you interested in seeing next!

What kind of work should we expect to do in summers during your career as a professor? Conferences? More publishing? Anything would be helpful.. Not so many professor youtubers !! Greatful for your channel thank you

Also very interested if professors do a lot of work in the community for different social causes or do they strictly stick to work within the classroom and research
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 5 лет назад
@@sarastewart1215 It really depends on the type of position you have. For example, I am a lecturer which means I focus 100% on teaching. So in the summer, I may teach one class or if I'm planning redesign a class, I would spend my summer doing that. Otherwise, I'm free. If you are a tenure track professor, it's likely that your load is 50% teaching, 50% research. But often, teaching takes up most of your semester so you may have to spend the summers doing research to keep up with the number of publications you need. So it really depends on the position as well as the type of university you work at.

@@sarastewart1215 I think it depends of the area you work in. For example, the math department runs a Math Summer Camp for high school students in the community. Other professors may teach a service-learning course where the class does a semester long service project in the community. But it definitely depends on what your interests are.

Hey! So what are the typical hours for a lecturer? How much time off do you get a year? What's the average pay for a lecturer?
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 2 года назад
We don't really have set hours. Just however long it takes to prepare for and teach your classes. I teach 12 hours each semester. So that's typically 4 3-credit classes three times a week. Salary is dependent upon your field and your school. If you Google professor salaries, you can see the breakdown by field, position, and school.

Are professors sometimes told to make the exam to hard or to easy?
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 4 года назад
I've never been told to do that. I ask my students questions that let me know if they really understand the material or not.

Hi Toyin, I really love your channel. I have master degree but non-linear with my bachelor's degree. What is your suggestion for me to teach since the minimum degree to be a lecturer here in Indonesia is master degree? Thank you for your answer.
@theacademicsociety

Thank you Galeri! Are you interested in being a lecturer in your master's field? I think it's helpful to reach out to people with positions similar to what you want and learn about their path to getting a job and see if they have any advice for you

How many hours do you work per a week ??
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 3 года назад
I teach 12 hours a week, I have 4 office hours each week, and I spend about 3-4 hours prepping for class each week. Grading varies but I would estimate to spend about 3 hours grading each week as well.

do you call yourself a professor? is it common in the US to call anyone who teaches at university a professor? in the UK , that isn't the case. even associate professors aren't called professor. I wonder why huge differences exist across the two countries
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 4 года назад
My job title is actually Lecturer but the word "professor" is more understandable to people so I use that when I name my videos
@shahilagh
@shahilagh 4 года назад
@@theacademicsociety Well, Lecturer is highly well known and it means someone who teaches at the university. It is both clear for people and consistent with your actual role.
@theacademicsociety
@theacademicsociety 4 года назад
@@shahilagh In the US, it seems that "lecturer" is a fairly new type of position. When I've talked with people in person, they are usually unclear about what a lecturer is. However, in my videos, I always share that I'm a lecturer and when relevant I share my duties as well.
@shahilagh
@shahilagh 4 года назад
@@theacademicsociety I think you are doing a GREAT job, but I wouldn't call myself professor If my role isn't called professor.
@chicano4041
@chicano4041 4 года назад
@@shahilagh In the US, you get use to calling yourself a professor because students will call you professor. Even if you tell them you're an adjunct, part-timer or lecturer. That's the way it is here. Also, depending on where you teach, the school will literally give you the title adjunct professor, part-time professor or visiting professor. So, in short, saying professor is just easier and understood in the states.
