IF you find a hospital that uses the AORN Periop 101 with a residency that will train you for a solid 6 months, as well as a supportive environment, it can be. I started OR as a new grad, unfortunately in a very toxic environment, and hated it for years before I grew to love it.. It is a VERY steep learning curve. Be patient with yourself, you might not feel like you really know what you are doing for about a year or more. Not all OR's are created equal: If your management tolerates surgeons throwing instruments and being verbally abusive, that's not acceptable and you don't have to take it. Find a better OR. Once you learn the ropes, it can be a great field, but until then, give yourself lots of grace. Learn to take feedback, even when delivered abruptly, and don't take it personally. There's a lot of moving parts to learn. I do not recommend outpatient OR as a new grad, as they are not set up to train you adequately.

But the last time I heard they don’t want to employ them because they’re not nurses. This is from the company I work with, not sure with other private companies.

I don’t think there’s any difference really. It’s just depends on which country you’re in. I think overseas scrub nurses are known to be surgical nurses. However, I stand to be corrected.

It isn’t easy but once you know the basics you will not go wrong.

@@phoebekwete I’m really not trying to insult the OR profession, I’m just trying to get out of bedside and many say once you get the routine with different procedures, it’s pretty cozy. My rn friend said they would never go back to bedside

@@phoebekwete thank you. I just wanted some clarity on surgical nursing. Hopefully you were not offended by me assuming OR is easy bc I'm sure there are challenges, but procedural focused nursing jobs are more routine than floor, so I assume there are going to be surgical days where it's standard procedure in that the day is not hard. Thank you for the input
