A day in the life of an ACUTE CARE NURSE PRACTITIONER

This video is all about being an acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP). ACNPs make up a smaller portion of the NP workforce, however, they have some really cool educational training and knowledge. ACNPs function in many different capacities, including critical care medicine, emergency medicine, inpatient medicine, and specialty care. At their core, they are trained to take care of unstable patients that require hospitalization and hemodynamic monitoring.

I work in a Covid / Cardiothoracic ICU and our NPs insert Swans (along with all the other lines) fairly regularly. I will add that they work for a physician group and have additional training and privileges that I have not seen with other NPs at our hospital. I'm sure that probably makes a big difference! Great content, as usual David!

Hey David! You are awesome and love your videos! 😁 CRNA here and currently going for my ACNP cert (I know, I'm a glutton for punishment, but I am a nerd and love to learn other skillsets!). What's your name on The Gram to follow you? And PLEASE don't feel too bad for being real in your last video. You have to keep it 100 with us. We need to accept the good with the bad and you are doing us a disservice without telling us that. You ARE NOT negative and those wanting to get into the profession need to know that the profession isn't always rainbows and butterflies.

Thanks for posting David! I’m in FNP school now. I’m glad you highlighted FNP v.s ACNP v.s ENP(briefly). I want to work in the ER & I plan to post cert in an ENP program. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy the content. I’m looking forward to the 5 min Friday’s 👍🏾

I love the idea of you interviewing other NPs/PAs/MDs! Many of us on here are contemplating paths so I think many would benefit from that. Also, in another video you said you have considered going back for a psych DNP and I’d be very interested in hearing more about your reasons and perspective on that.

Love your videos man! Definitely don't think the apology was needed, you're just keeping it real! Thanks so much for that. I'm applying to NP schools right now. Opinion on Direct-entry programs where you earn your RN and NP in the same program?

Thank you so much for watching! Appreciate it. As far as direct entry programs- I know of a few but I don’t know a whole lot about them to be 100% honest. I have a few colleagues who went that route and have done fine.

Hi! This was very informative, I'd like to go into outpatient/urgent care (I'm currently in an ABSN program and will be graduating this upcoming April); I start my last term soon and I will be going into complex care clinical and will be doing my preceptorship, so who knows, I might end up liking the critical care stuff and decide to go for ACNP 🤷🏻‍♂️ Decisions, decisions...

Hi David quick question: does an acute care nurse practitioner have to work in the ICU? Can they work in a step down in the hospital or med-surg unit? I want to pursue my ACNP however I'm not interested in working in the ICU.

Hi David, I recently discovered your channel and watched many of your videos because my girlfriend and i want to become travel nurse practitioners (in the same fields as you) but we want to know if it’s rare that hospitals/clinics are willing to take two travel np at the same time. Is it a realistic goal for us to want to work at the same place and have the same or similar schedule? and if you can’t answer, do you know who i can ask because i can’t find anything on the internet. Thank you for your time and thank you for your great videos!

Unfortunately, the main hospital system in my region does not honor ENP programs and all NP’s hired for the ER must have both FNP and AGACNP. I think it’s because A) the ENP cert is fairly new and B) there is a small chance they might have to float up to the ICU. So I had to choose a different program, otherwise I would have loved to go the ENP route.

hi, i think thats a great idea that you interview others. Also can you talk about hows FNP like ? I am looking into getting NP but I am looking into both FNP and acute care and try to decide on that. thank you

Gosh, David. You have so much experience! Have you tried applying to jobs outside of the hospital setting, like an outpatient urgent care or clinic? Nevertheless, you're a badass and thanks so much for your insight / videos.

would recommend becoming an FNP before specializing in acute care NP? do you also think its very crucial to be an ICU RN before schooling?

Thank you for the videos!! Im at a crossroads... originally on FNP track but now planning to change to AG-ACNP. Would you say that one has advantages over the other when it comes to job openings/ need and pay? Would your opinion be that FNP is a better foundation to start as opposed to ACNP or does it really matter? Thank you again!

I have a question. I want to do OR nursing and then eventually do ACNP w/RNFA and be a surgical NP. Does UAB take OR nursing of 2 yrs experience? or only ICU??
@DavidWarrenNP

Hmm I’m not sure to be honest. Reach out to the program directors! They will most likely be able to answer those questions.

@DavidWarrenNP

Hi! Thanks for watching. So AG-ACNP= ACNP now. The ACNP credential has been retired, and all programs are AG-ACNP, but they are essentially the same as ACNP.

To become a ACNP, do you need to get into a AC Np program or just work under acute care speciality until ur certified?

Hey David, appreciate the videos and information and your advancement of the np role. I know you are open and honest about your concerns of the NP market but paradoxically with every video I bet you are making more and more nurses want to become NPs because of how inspirational you are 🤣 I’m in FNP program now, by the way EVERYONE is online now because of covid, even prestigious duke and chapel hill (where I live). It’s just the way of the world unfortunately. Anyways, I’ve worked Er,icu, and inpatient as a Rn. But I’m kind of up in the air about where I want to land as a FNP. would you recommend going straight into an ER, or primary care first? Urgent care? Thanks for your insight!
