#RedForEd has elevated Phoenix teacher Rebecca Garelli into a strange new position: A classroom teacher with a statewide profile.
Garelli, 37, has worn red for much of the past few months, ever since she created a Facebook page that ignited Arizona’s buildup of teacher frustration, then helped stoke it into #RedForEd.
This is her second year teaching middle-school science at Sevilla West, a west Phoenix school 30 miles from her Gilbert, Arizona home. It was the only school district in the Phoenix area that offered her anything close to what she had made back home in Chicago.
Read about how Rebecca manages her home, classroom and activism here: bit.ly/2AgenJT

I can see where you're coming from, and even if noone asked you, most of us are glad you shared because you have the experience and went through the system entirely. You, in 34 plus years, have seen Common Core take over, full power granted to whiney entitled students, teachers fired for defending themselves against badly raised and hateful students, and teachers put on pedestals for supporting the corruption. I'm not a teacher, but I've seen and read enough to agree that the teaching career today is not suitable for honest and focused teachers who dont want lefty, anti white political ideologies in their classrooms.

This resonated with me. It looks almost identical to my day. I also live over an hour away from my school and rarely eat on my 25 minute lunch break. With the workload, paperwork, amount of students not on grade level, demanding parents, and traveling time I'm utterly exhausted when I get home. Then I make dinner and grade or continue writing an IEP. It's a depressingly thankless and demanding job. People say they appreciate teachers one moment but their actions say differently in the next...

You need significant and palpable pay raises, support in the classroom and from the state u reside in. Then comes acknowledgement from the school administration. They should pay 4 your gas as well. Not 2 mention providing the classrooms with all of the necessary tools needed 2 keep students interested and motivated. These things should not be coming out of your pockets. And while I am on this rant, the PARENTS should be making sure their kids get enough sleep and are fed nutrient RICH foods 2 keep them healthy, not 2 mention mindfulness, breathing exercises and/or yoga 2 maintain healthy responses 2 whatever they may be up against. The problem is not money. For decades we've spent more on "education" per capita than most countries in the world and get less quality education in return. The problem is how the money is being spent. It seems the first thing a school district does upon receiving a budget increase is hire more administrators. Then they build new schools that they knock down in five to ten years. What's wrong with "education"... the US Dept of Education, the school boards, the NEA, and "parents".

Teachers all over the US face challenges. The fundamental thing that people don't understand is that US Senators make around $175K per year plus lifetime benefits. Why does anyone believe that they would vote for all teachers to be able to make what they make? Even if they did, under a tax funded system, why would anyone believe that people would agree to an insane tax hike to fund teachers who are already demonized in many circles?

I’m an 8th grade science teacher in CA and one of my sections is ELD science (mixed grades). 19 years teaching. I’d like to tell Ms. Garelli that she needs to move closer to Sevilla or get a job teaching closer to home. I used to commute 55 min one way to a school I worked in as a HS A.P. Did that for three years and got out of Dodge, finding employment now only 15 min from home. Trust me, you don’t owe anything to any school. Your mental health is what’s most important. Second, try Sketchers walking shoes. Extremely comfortable. You need the best shoes you can have for the rigors of teaching because bad footwear zaps your energy. Also why are you watching kids at lunch? That must be some AZ thing. In CA, we have duty free lunches. Of course our unions are stronger. You’re a great teacher and you work well with Latino kids. As a Mexican American, I can tell you have what it takes to do our Latino kids right by them. Keep up the good work!!!

Hate to tell you this but this stuff goes on nationwide. You will find some pockets of good districts but they are far and few and most teachers can't get hired there because they are some of the rare good places to work. They also tend to only hire longtime locals and relatives. Most are s-holes. Even some of the private schools aren't worth dealing with, especially on the teacher's side because they pay nothing and give almost no benefits. I know a teacher who just retired after 34 years in a private school, but she has to keep working crap jobs because they did not provide her with any sort of a pension. Lots of jobs are like this now. No pay, no benies, no future.

Tired is to put it MILDLY!! It's not what it used to be! My teachers would turn over in their graves if they could see the DOWNFALL of what's become of the so called EDUCATION SYSTEM! Growing up 4 decades ago, from 9AM to 4PM, we had an hour of direct LEARNING in EACH SUBJECT, with BEAUTIFULLY illustrated books and workbooks. You could hear a feather fall upon the floor..because our parents had taught us to RESPECT those in authority! Spanish speaking children knew the English language fluently by the end of the First Grade! We did not have "Emotionally Disturbed" children, as that today who create such disruptions that motivated peers have to WITNESS, which ruins their learning environment! NO!!! We had UNINTERRUPTED LEARNING 6 hours per day! Today's techniques are a farce...teachers giving "high fives" to their students, giving out constant PRAISES when a disobedient student FINALLY decides to hand in work! (What about the feelings of the students who ALWAYS had in completed assignments?) Today's education system is run by nit wits who have made teachers become counselors, social workers, and glorified baby sitters, while parents sorely lag in appropriate parenting skills!!! Teachers are now at their wits end trying to teach and contend with disobedient, unruly, disrespectful children of drug addicts, alcoholics, and neurotic parents who should NEVER have brought these precious innocents into their dark world in which teachers must now find a way to cope!

Karenina Beltran I was flipping through a photo album and found class pictures- I counted 40 to 45 students in each photo. One teacher, no assistant. There were no long-term disciplinary problems because it was dealt with by the principal right away and parents were called in. There was an emphasis on writing, reading, grammar, math and spelling. When I volunteer in a classroom now, I’m shocked at how the children have no skills. They don’t know even how to sound out words, much less read or compose a sentence. They will be mentally and financially crippled in life.

I think a lot of working class parents tend to have an inconsistent and violent disciplinary style. They are usually busy working and have no idea what is happening at school. They are only involved when its something negative. School should be an extension of home not a place you leave your kids with strangers.

After 13 years of total abuse, no support whatsoever, and my health deteriorating because of the job (I'd be dead now if I would have stayed), I finally called it quits. My health and sanity were too important to keep trying to do the impossible. It very much scares me for what our society has to look forward to.

@John Connor Oh, please. There is much, much more to teaching than just having subject knowledge. You need to have all sorts of understanding of how to impart knowledge and skills. Knowing the subject matter alone won't cut it. There's a lot involved from psychology to public speaking as well as different forms of management skills. Nowadays, in many of the schools, you also need to know a lot about security and self-defense. That was essential for the system I worked for. Another big reason that I quit. And that's only for starters. It can be a very, very tough job but can also be wonderful if in the right environment. Unfortunately, these days, those are few and far between.

@John Connor You clearly have never been a teacher and know nothing about what all it takes to be a good teacher. They are much more than babysitters with tiny bits of knowledge as you seem to assume. You might not need those extra degrees but you are expected to have many of those extra skills as well as being required to continually take such classes and workshops throughout your entire career. Teach a year and then come back. There is so much more involved than meets the eye and what the average person assumes.

How much of funding has historically gone to the classroom? How much is being cut to the classroom? How much goes to administrators, test-making and textbook companies (billion dollar industries thanks to the deprofessionalization of teachers), and the entire education industry which jumped on board the cash cow which politicians created by sticking their noses into education in the first place. What is being cut as far as I understand, is not what goes to the classroom, but all of the bloat surrounding it. They make the classrooms suffer to milk more money from taxpayers who will do anything for the sake of the children...except stand up against the real problems that schools face: government intervention and the breakdown of the family.

The strain on teachers today is enormous. Why? Because a huge percentage of parents do not parent, do not raise their children to have a sense of decency and respect. Result: the classroom is a jungle. This drives the parents of the well behaved into alternative schools and home schooling, increasing the ratio of hooligans in our public schools and wearing teachers out.
