While all children can seem quirky or particular about their likes and dislikes, children with Sensory Processing Disorder (also called Sensory Integration Dysfunction) will be so severely affected by their sensory preferences that it interferes with their normal, everyday functioning. Sensory issues are usually defined as either hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness) or hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness) to sensory stimuli.
About Brain Balance:
For over a decade, we’ve helped over 50,000 children improve the critical skills needed to create a brighter path for their future. Our team can help determine why your child struggles, then help equip them to better handle their own challenges, so they can enjoy and thrive in family gatherings, classrooms, social events, and more.

I've always had SPD and I found this really relatable and I still struggle with it to this day.

I have SPD and it's so frustrating when someone says "it's not that loud" or "just ignore it"

I have problems with my brother's noise, too. Only thing is, I get fed up when he's hard-headed. Or says the most offensive thing. "It's not that loud." Me: "Well, then me popping you with a shoe won't hurt then!" Then he stops hurting my ears. But my mother belittles my sensory issues as an "excuse" when it's far from it. I can't help that my brain has too many connections! I have to do what it takes to survive in this world, not her. She was there when I was diagnosed with Autism, and she has known that long before I was diagnosed, but she knows nothing about autism. She doesn't even try to learn.

I certainly have Sensory-Processing Sensitivity. I have found that the people I feel good about and enjoy having around do not bother me with sounds that normally would otherwise. It's strange, but how you feel about something strongly affects how you perceive it.

At the end of the day all people have things that annoy them or are hard to cope with, it's the individuals responsibility to comprehend that they live in an entire world that does not nor will it ever revolve around them. So, as harsh as it seems, the best help, in my opinion is to force that understanding and help them grow beyond their condition. I don't like stupid people but I know that yelling or hitting is inappropriate and as offensive if not more than someone making a loud noise. There is a sense of entitled, self importance that is engrained in these children when not approached in the correct way. It's not about making them ignore their issues but it is about making them cope with them.

As a person with SPD, the easiest way to explain part of it for me is “When you *don’t* do something, they assume you *won’t,* when it’s really that you *can’t”*

i've had acid reflux and a gag reflux since i was little, so i've been very afraid to try new things. i've been able to narrow it down to wet or soft foods, like yogurt, that might have dry or hard chunks in them. any way, i have never eaten candy, and the only chocolate ive had is cookies. it is very hard for me to stand the smell of chocolate or candy. honestly, i just think it's disgusting. and also hearing people chew food makes me gag.

@Mar A Wow, sorry I scratch the flesh off of my hands because I get intrusive thoughts about the texture of my skin, and I pull my hair if it isn't straight enough - it must be normal and I should continue because there's something wrong with me :D It must be my fault I can't focus at school, because of some random extroverted kid rambling on and it distresses me; which means they all hate me now! And the walls cave in on me and my head feels heavy and I feel like I'm going to die because my fingernails are too long and everything frustrates me. Let's just convert our brain to mentally healthy because there's so many disorders this one must be irrelevant :)

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing your perspective on this topic. Sensory processing disorder appears in different forms and different severities from person to person.
