A Day in the Life of the Celebrity Edge, and 6 Ways in Which That Day Will Be Different!

I recently sailed on the Celebrity Edge from Fort Lauderdale around the Western Caribbean. I reviewed that cruise in last week's video which you can find here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jcWQpmVCRrw.html
I usually jazz up a ship tour by making a "Day in the Life" video, but as the Edge had some quite different features I also wanted to discuss, instead of making two very similar videos with lots of overlap, I thought I'd fuse them into one video and try to cover both aspects of the cruise together.
I'm not sure the video works! Let me know in the comments... I also miscounted the bars - there are 6 in total (Edge, Casino, Martini, Club, Pool and Sunset) with the Magic Carpet being the 7th. I don't think that mis-count makes a difference to the point I am trying to make!
This video was originally released on my Matt's Planet channel, but as I am now featuring all of my cruise content on this new, cruising channel - Matt's Oceans.

Thanks so much for this video! Looks like the epitome of the perfect ship, where all the designers failed to consider, was the people who might end up onboard...

Thanks Steve - that's the summary! Lots of people love it though... And I believe its replacing the Silhouette as the UK based ship next Summer so lots more people will get the chance to try it...

More and more Matt we are coming to your channel to assist us in deciding on ships to give our time and money to, and your 'Edge-y' video, highlights a number of things that would put us off this ship now we've seen and heard your observations. Those windows by the way.....could live with that....but they aren't exactly a cutting edge inspirational design concept. Its exactly how a River Cruise cabin becomes a pseudo balcony on river cruise ships. Great vlog again. Witty AND informative....the first of which, many on RU-vid fail to include/edit into their work 😏

Thanks so much! I obviously need to go on more cruises.... OK! Off on P&O for the first time next week...

I do love your reviews. But I have to request a correction: You've emphasized the Edge has only 5 bars making it hard to find a drink. That is not correct: Sunset Bar, Pool Bar, Casino Bar, Eden Bar, The Club, and Martini Bar add up to 6. In addition, there is a bar in the Oceanview cafe, Magic Carpet, and Cafe Al Baccio (granted the last is focused on coffee drinks, but they do serve alcoholic coffee drinks here). That's 8 or 9 depending on your preferences. If you're in a suite, you also have access to Retreat Lounge and the Retreat Sun deck. And of course, each dining venue has bar service, so you can get a drink in any of the restaurants. So in the strictest sense, there are 8 bars to choose from (11 if you're in a suite).

Hello Laura! I did make a correction in the description to 6 bars - who knew I used to be an accountant... I also said that when the Magic Carpet was in use as a bar that made 7, although that's not all of the time. As for the cafes and restaurants, they're all predominantly restaurants that you wouldn't go to for just a drink, and I wouldn't call them bars. So 6 is the number I'd settle on, 7 if the Magic Carpet is in bar mode at that point in time. But either way, as a passenger on the Edge, you are very thinly served by bars, and you are far more thinly served by bars than you are on any other cruise ship I've ever been on. Whether the count is 5, 6 or 7, is that a point you disagree with?

The Edge class of Celebrity ships are definitely aiming for a certain customer group, which does not include me!!! The other Celebrity ships are much more my "cup of tea" Only been on one Princess cruise myself but I believe their ships are much more homogenous so you won't have this problem if you stay loyal to that brand!

You're welcome - hope I didn't put you off - its a great ship, just a little different from "traditional" cruise ships!

That was very informative. I'm sailing on the Edge next month and will be curious to see if I feel the same way as you.

It's always a little scary to be critical of a ship when others may react to something very differently to how I did.... I try hard to put my points in context! I'd love to know how the experience was for you when you've sailed if you have a moment!

Personally I think you will have a great experience but there are bound to be hiccups until you get to know how things work especially on booking dinner reservations so sort that first !

Just got off the Edge 2 weeks ago. Yep, I agree with everything you said. Service was good but this ship is not our cup of tea. Back on the Equinox class next time. BTW, menus were repetitive. Food in the steakhouse was marginal. Prime rib was tough and filets were not done correctly.

Thanks Richard. It looks beautiful, but it didn't really work for me! Equinox class pricing has shot up too - good for Celebrity - so it may be a while before I'm back with them!

100% nope, wouldn’t travel on this one. Really great review thanks Matt. So there could be over 700 people in each of the 5 bars if it was full? Definitely wouldn’t be happy with that. Never been on a cruise, but I have cruised to Spain on the Pont Aven and have to say I love it, we’ll most of the time, when it’s not force 10 in the bay of biscay lol. Trying to persuade the boss to go on a proper cruise or trans Atlantic on a Queen but not managed yet. He thinks cruising is for old queen’s and he’s not ready to be classified as a Queen lol. 😅
@MattsOceans
@MattsOceans Год назад
Had a comment recently that staff shortages on an Edge cruise meant that they started to close bars as well! The Pont Aven is 40k tonnes (tons???) - the Edge is 131k so its a different experience in bad weather, even if the Bay of Biscay can still bite even the biggest ships! Gary Bembridge made an excellent video about a transatlantic on a Queen recently which I'd recommend if you're considering it - he went with his husband who also had a different attitude towards cruising...

Well once again I’ve been on Beyond and didn’t have any problems. The magic carpet is excellent especially for tenders Never had a problem getting a drink especially as the waiters served you quickly. Our entertainment was good but found Eden too small when big shows on and we had many people commenting on the infinity balcony’s some with a 👍 and some not sure It seems you concentrate mainly on what you don’t like with the odd things you do like which is okay but not everyone is like you

So who wins out of Celebrity versus P&O? 100% positive videos get really boring so its all about balance... I really didn't like the Edge and I really didn't like what P&O has done on the Azura...

Well Matt I’m pretty sure , like the steep hike in 2024 prices , there are going to be numerous changes and I’m afraid in my opinion this is going to be the norm and cruising as you and I used to know it will never go back to how it was. Once those changes have been about for a year or so and everyone has had a moan it will be like everything else that has made a difference in our lives those changes will be accepted as well. I hope I’m wrong but I think one cabin service will be with us for good and less food waste because of smaller portions will not change at least for several years to come. Yes ships are attracting more 1st time cruisers but I would think after land base holidays they would be well pleased with their cruise ! It’s people like us that see the differences but overall I hope you would agree that trying to reduce a $35.4 billion debt isn’t easy and cruising is still a good value holiday.

Hi Matt you asked Celebrity or P&O ? For quality in every way Celebrity , for value for money P&O. I have done comparisons with beach resort holidays of the similar categories and dates and overall cruises are better value ( with extras🥴) Will say and never tried but I think MSC are going to be a market leader soon Hope we are ok 👍
@MattsOceans
@MattsOceans Год назад
I fear you may be right but I hope you are wrong! I was thinking about other sectors... Would we accept planes crashing every now and again because airlines are scrimping on maintenance to recoup some of their losses? Would we accept McDonalds killing the occasional customer through allergen contamination because they scrimped on procurement to recoup some of their losses? Obviously no and no, and its not a good comparison... P&O (and others) are scrimping on the service experience as a deliberate choice and it is down to us to either accept that or to reject it and spend our vacation cash elsewhere... Even if it doesn't come through in this video, I'd still much rather go on a downscaled cruise than sit on a lounger (that doesn't move!!!) in a resort in Spain... I'm just not sure that diminishing the quality of their brand, and more importantly diminishing the perceived quality of their brand, is the smart thing to do if they want to boost their financial position... They may win loyalty from new customers who have no benchmark, but they'll lose heaps of goodwill from the brand loyalists who have built P&O to where it is... Which I think is the general sense you get from those who have travelled on P&O over the years and aren't looking to go back... It's easy to let a brand slip down market but its a nightmare to ever get it back up if you do....
