A Day on The Reno Branch!

The Reno Local, one of the more profound locals based out of Sparks, Nevada, traverses the previously owned Western Pacific Reno Branch north out of Reno.
This video is a look at a full northbound run of the Reno Local, from Sparks to Bordertown, Nevada!
Traveling only two miles along the mainline, the LSP49 (Reno Local) meets the ex. Western Pacific branch at CPRV241, at Sutro. After branching off the mainline, the local heads north into Downtown Reno, where a scrapping company lies, one of two scrap metal industries the local serves along the way! The railroad, and this area of the city do not combine well, and clashes between homeless and the local are always a possibility, and this crew puts in their work fast. Only 10 minutes spent in Downtown Reno, off into the desert!
Leaving Reno, we head north along the University of Reno Nevada campus, and leave the city behind. Dry landscapes are ahead, and this is just the start!
Parr BLVD is the next industry served by the 49, and receives loaded centerbeams. Though this location is heavily industrialized, signs of the desert are still visible on the hills surrounding the branch. After spotting one loaded centerbeam, the Reno Local continues its trip north towards its next stop at AmeriGas, located in Golden Valley!
Spotting tank cars at AmeriGas proves to be a challenge to say the least!
Making a successful hook, on a curve, with very little room for error is a challenge the Reno Crew faces when serving this industry, but they sure make it look like a breeze! (no switching clips featured)
Within no-time, the 49 is back on its way north to Bordertown!
After a short stop for lunch, we find the local traversing one of the northernmost accessible locations to photograph the train.
Trackage stays far from the roads along this section, and only a few locations are accessible by car. We wave goodbye to the Reno Crew, as they take two tank cars north to the last industry in Bordertown; Coast!

Great coverage of a rare beast! As is well known in my household, I am “obsessed” with the Reno Local. From the area I live (Sutro/McCarran) I can tell from the horn blasts it’s chugging up the hill from Fourth St. I’ll say ‘it’s the Local’. They think I’m a nut.🤤

Sadly, the daily train was that size 6 days a week in 2000. We had two jobs back then, one hauling the cars to Portola and back and the other spotted the industries. Very nice video and thanks for the jog down memory lane.

Great video. I well remember when the local ran from Parr Yard to Reno Junction in the early 1990's. The cars were then set out to be picked up be an eastbound train to Winnemucca & beyond. Not uncommon to have more than fifty cars on the local back then.

I always hit the traffic on my way back from work on the Sparks / Veterans overpass, occasionally seeing a train on the tracks makes the wait worth it though. Awesome video amigo!

Just found your channel with this vid. Very nice. I was gonna suggest the Mina branch and Fernley switcher; but in scanning down your vids it looks like you have covered these and more. The area is rich with cool train stuff and all those branches. I model the Mina branch as part of my layout, but only get into Wabuska. (It's the SPNG standard gauged) I look forward to checking out what you've caught.

Thank you! I have covered the Mina Branch and the Fallon Branch back in the early months of 2024. Unfortunately, that was back when I had a bad tri-pod!

Years ago when I used to go to the Reno Air Races out by Stead Airport I remember there was train tracks along the 395 and at Stead Airport are those the same ones that you see here? I never did follow them and knew where they went. Wasn’t familiar with the area to be honest still not familiar but I haven’t been to Reno in years. Thank you for the video either way.

Very well done video. I've often wondered about this train as I've seen it approaching Bordertown. Is there ever any interchanging of cars at Reno Jct.? Sometimes, when I look at the track as CA SR-70 passes over, the track seems to look shiny as if a train passes over it.
