On 8th August 2022 I had the pleasure of a day sail from Portsmouth on the tall ship Tenacious. Owned by the Jubilee Sailing Trust, she is unique in providing opportunities for both able bodied and disabled people to sail on a square rigger. She's got a talking compass so even blind people can steer. Wide decks and lifts between decks enable people in wheelchairs to visit all parts of the ship. We had a lovely day, the wind was a quite light so it was a bit of a drift but it was a most enjoyable experience, one that I hope to repeat before too long. You can find out more about Tenacious at www.jst.org.uk

Excellent experience. Was hoping to see them "crack" on the sails...pretty pedestrian for that beautiful ship.

Hi William, The sails were bit of a token gesture, the wind was very light and we were only expected to be out for a few hours. They had a rookie crew (like me) so there was a lot of pulling at the wrong time etc. I was actually surprised that they put as much up as they did. Coupled to which the sails unfurl more easily when the wind pulls them out, they furl into the yards and require quite a lot of pulling on sheets to get them out. With a bit of wind it would have been much easier as the pressure of the wind would have helped. Thanks for watching. Check out my other videos and Pleeeease subscribe.

Lovely. I'd give my eye teeth to do a transAtlantic on something like that.

Hi Again, I would love to go too, maybe I will. I'm a cancer survivor so I need 3 monthly medical treatment and constant blood tests (to make sure I'm still alive). It was a lovely day out though, I was on a hell of a high for weeks after, still am a bit :-)

@@davesailing I was in Portsmouth in 2018, didn't see her there, maybe she wasn't doing day trips then? Had to content myself drooling over the Victory and Warrior...I could spend a week visiting that dockyard. Be well, I enjoy your videos!

Done a couple of trips on her many years ago. Lots more safety gear now especially for going up the rope ladders to ascend the mast

Hi Stuart, yes I was very impressed with the safety brief and the fall arrest device. The climbing was very low stress. I got talking to some of the crew involved and they told me how much the safety gear had improved over the years.

Can't help feeling it's a shame that everything is so very safety-strapped and harnessed. Rigid ratlines not ropes; safety lines everywhere; making about a half-dozen sails on a day which cried out for every inch of canvas. An experience, I'm sure, but not very close to genuinely crewing a tall ship. But what do I know?

Check out the Jubilee Sailing Trust web site Roger. They are strongly focussed on sailing for everybody and so there are compromises and safety is paramount, especially when you've got doddery old farts like me going up the rigging. There would be such a furore if they killed someone. It's a lot different on board when they are on a proper passage and the paying crew are expected to sail the boat. There are watches, which include full time crew, Volunteer crew and paying crew and they run the ship for x hours. It takes quite a lot of work and time to deploy all the sails and on just a day out, no sooner would they have been rigged than we would have had to take 'em all back in again. The higher up the mast the rigging is less rigid and just rope ratlines.

Ok. I’m going to do that. A day pretending I’m Aubrey.
