The more we learn, the more we realize we are one big family. I learnt a long time ago that Umtwa, in many Nguni languages, refers to a short person particularly of the San (Masarwa) tribe. Besides the many variations in tribe names and dialects, many if not all African people can 'trace' their own languages in another group. "Nyama" is meat in many Nguni languages. Chances are you'll find the same across Southern Africa, to Kenya and beyond.

There were also the Gumba in Kenya, they were dwarfs two and lived in forests, but the were absorbed into other communities.

@@angelanyambura2843 The Gumba were not Bantu and they weren't too short. They were Cushites. They were assimilated by the Kikuyu and may be other tribes.

@@susangesare-sg5sr pymies means "tall as a fist";obviously this isnot their name! At some point we have to collectively stop to call ourselves with names used to diminish ourselves. We owe this to the next generations... You got Batwa, Baka, Bambuti, etc...let's not forget our names. This is how people in Australia are now called Aborigenes, when that's not even a name for a people for starters. Let's not do that to ourselves.

It's amazing that there are still people that can live entirely self-sustainably in such environments. A place teaming with life, threats to life, and health. Their knowledge is very specialized. I hope we learn from them before they disappear into the cities, and their knowledge is forever lost.

Awesome reminder of our diversity. Our hunter-gatherer communities in East Africa The Batwa in Uganda , In Kenya and Tanzania they used to be called Ndorobos (they consider it derogatory) now in Kenya we call them the Ilchamus in Baringo areas and we also have the Ogiek around the Mau region...

These people are called Abatwa in South Africa. Funny how the 81 year old man sounded familiar when he said "yiza nyama" come meat also means the same in Zulu and Xhosa. Kinda not surprised how these indegenous normads are all around in Africa.

I did not know that Uganda had Abatwa, too. We have them in Rwanda, too. The only difference is that in Rwanda, they're not living in the forest, and they're integrating more and more in the community 😊

We also have them in Congo Brazzaville but inter marriage with the bantu is slowly taking them out of the forest living. The autochtones ( pygmies ) in Congo have a skin tone slighly lighter than those from Uganda
