The fact that they turned her origin story into a book and not an episode in S4 where Twilight could ask Cadence how she became a princess and how she delt with the responsibilities early on.
I don’t know if there is a Canon answer for why Prince Blueblood is Celestia and Luna’s nephew, but my personal theory is that he is like one of the last descendants of the original unicorn monarchy from a hearths warming tale. He’s the last descendant of Princess Platinum
Thats a cool theory! My personal theory/head canon is that prince blueblood is the son of some ponies that were close to celestia and luna and something happened to them, therefore celestia and luna took him in.
I’ll admit her debut always left a bad taste in my mouth but the fact she started as a pegasus and not a unicorn is interesting in that magic would be an unfamiliar thing at first.
It’s kind of sad how you have to read the IDW comics nopony talks about the G. M. Berrow novels you can only find in the middle of juvenile fiction at the library to fully grasp Cadance’s character. She is far from my favorite character, but she is a great one nonetheless and pretty underrated. I wish we saw more of her and her backstory in the show.
Right, she has more personality in the comics and she was actually doing much more in there fighting wise compared to the show. Like “Siege of the Crystal Empire” and even in Season 10. I wanna know how she became an alicorn fr and her transformation

yeah i also heard the books had something about her backstory, but unfortunately they're harder to access than the comics :/ i have been meaning to read the one about cadance tho, it's like the only time we get insight we about her lmao
I think the inconsistency regarding Twilight not recognizing Cadance at first might be because either Twilight only ever knew Cadance by the latter name and not her full name, or Twilight got so used to calling Cadance by the latter name that she forgot what Cadance's full name was. Both are equally possible. Not to mention, Twilight did say herself that she was having trouble staying in touch with her brother in the Canterlot Wedding episode. Not directly, but it was somewhere along those lines. It's actually the same thing with Applejack and Coloratura. Applejack didn't recognize Coloratura's name until Pinkie showed her Coloratura's cutie mark. Long names are easily forgettable, but nicknames are easier to remember.
Oh for sure! Always called my aunt “auntie Liz”. One time someone asked me who Giselle was and I was like I have no idea I’ve never heard of her. Then a few days later I was reminded that Giselle is Liz 😅
IDC what anyone else says, Cadence is best princess. Who else of the royal alicorns can 1. Run a kingdom as an actual Queen rather than a princess, (even though she still keeps the title of Princess), 2. Has a significant other ruling alongside them and assisting them consistently, and 3. Be a caring, attentive mother to a baby alicorn, and a damn good one at that?
I was thinking the reason she's Twilight's babysitter might be because her brother was friends/romantically involved with Cadence for a long time, maybe even before she went alicorn.
Although I would love to have concrete Cadance backstory, I do think kids shows are stronger when they leave the world a little mysterious. That way, kids playing with the toys can come up with their own backstories for the characters and play those out. Also kids who haven't seen every episode just need a grasp on Cadance's personality to start playing with her toys. (I do think she was designed to sell toys, but so was the whole franchise, and I'm a fan of the 80s cartoons and toys too so I've made my peace with that- she doesn't have to be a bad character just because she was made to sell toys!) I preferred earlier on in the show when they didn't flesh out as many non-pony species, kingdoms, ancient ponies- I love worldbuilding lore, but it began to feel a bit tangled even for me.
I feel that Discord is also a mysterious characters. We know pretty much nothing of his backstory… Where is he from? How did he get his powers? Is he the only one of his species? How does he exist? Was he born as the lord of Chaos? Does he have some relation to the devil? Was he created in a freak accident? Where did he get his powers from? Is he god? Is he satan? How old is he? Did he know Celestia as a child? Can he move between realities and universes? Was he around when Equestria/Earth was made?
in the comics we don't really get a glimpse of his backstory but we know the title of "Lord of Chaos" is because he manipulated everyone's memories in the past to believe the deeds of the Lord of Malice, Cosmos, were his because Cosmos was so wicked and so dangerous, even Discord thought it was better for her to be forgotten. At first Discord just liked playing harmless pranks but since he did that, everyone thought he was some sort of evil deity that would try to harm them, which forced him to self isolate and made him bitter toward the rest of the world.
I’m really upset we didn’t get more screentime and interactions from Princess Cadance. She had a great introduction, and definitely proved herself worthy of her Princess title. I loveee her backstory in the chapter books, and I love how sweet, and caring she is. The saltiest I’ve ever been is when she made an appearence in the finale, but didn’t join them for the final fight. I wanted to see her and Chrysalis banter in a fight, and would’ve loved to see her lead her subjects to wage against the terrible trio, especially since their whole thing is that they’re filled with love.
wait was that the real reason?! I remember the episode airing around the same time as the wedding and made a joke about it with my friends at the time, but didn't know if it had ever been confimred anywhere!
@@oddishhime I don’t know FOR A FACT if any execs have outright admitted it but the timing and marketing around her debut episode and HOW HARD they were pushing the “royal wedding” buzz word during that time makes it seem rather obvious. Another mlp RU-vidr (I think shunks who makes great content) brought it to my attention. And it makes sense as to why her and shining armor seemed to have been introduced out of nowhere with no other thought put into them at least at the time, because they were made to sell toys and profit off all the wedding fever hype 😖😖😖
I'm just a bit confused about the whole "why is flurry heart an alicorn" question, because, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it obvious that it's due to Cadance being the only one out of the four known alicorns in the whole series to actually give birth? Perhaps if the other alicorns did too, they'd also give birth to alicorn babies.

Idk, it just irks me a little as the show made a big deal out of her being the first alicorn birth ever, considering it’s established alicorn status is earned, then they never elaborated on it
My head canon was that born alicorns are immortal (like Luna and Celestia) and “awarded” alicorns (like cadence and twilight) were just powerful and deemed royalty. The show destroyed this from every angle and it irritates me but whatever lol
when flurry heart was revealed, the princesses say that she is the first born alicorn. so nor Celestia nor Luna were born alicorns. or this dialogue was a very confusing error, which i doubt with how mlp has really good writers
Calling her a cash grab is beyond unreasonable in my opinion; She does give off marketable toys energy but her design and personality in both the IDW and show can easily put her in top tier with the other princesses for being a nod to the original color pallet of mlp toys and the fact she did parkour in a mind shaft to find her true love while being badly hurt physically and mentally. She is also a wonderful mother let us not forget whom she is raising?!?
someone in the comments here said her introduction into the show was very likely as a cash grab for the Royal wedding that was happening at the same time.
Fun fact: There is an alternative version of cadence that is evil in the MLP IDW reflection comics. In the alternative universe she's the princess of hate and her cutie mark is a broken crystal heart. It's also stated that in this alternative universe, she's the most evil and most powerful among evil Celestia and Luna. It's also hinted that she may have a transformation similar to Nightmare Moon and Daybreaker but sadly it's never mentioned again and we never get to see it.
looking it up it says she was stated in the comics to be a "very distant relative of amore" however the comic has contradictions to the show apparently
From the theories I read, the long-flowing mane (that the other princesses have ) is directly dependent on how much magic the pony in question has, this is why Mistmane (who isn't an alicorn) had the same flowing hair as Celestia, Luna, and (later on) Twilight.
Princess Cadence is my absolute favorite princess no doubts about it she's just so sweet and fun and the mysteries around her make her so compelling, i absolutely love her
Even if Cadence was made to sell more toys, I always really liked her and considered her one of my favorite Princesses for the show. I do wish we got to see more of her, especially more of her and Twilight since they have such a sweet bond
I love this video! I hadn’t thought about the fact that in the show, we know next to nothing about Cadence, despite the fact she’s the sister-in-law of the main character. Her kingdom and presence in the show are also quite important. I remember really loving her personality and her character design and it’s strange how there were never episodes about her origins or even how she fell in love and met Shining Armor in the first place. Celestia and Luna kind of got the same treatment as well. It’s really unfortunate because these are awesome characters who I would’ve loved to know more about.
I’m glad the writers thought to make Luna and celestia feel more like actual characters in the later seasons, it’s a shame Cadance didn’t get as much attention!
Honestly I really really love Cadence, ever since she was revealed I just really felt drawn to her. It's so sad that she wasn't that included in the show😕

20:10 that's a fun theory, but it doesn't make much sense to me. i've always assumed that the flowing manes were associated with their magic power. for example, mistmane has flowing hair as a pillar and she isn't an alicorn. when luna is transformed back from nightmare moon, and her power is drained, she loses the flowing mane. twilight didn't gain flowing hair until the finale too. i like the idea that pegasi get fun wings though! thats so cute
They never said Celestia and Luna weren't born alicorns they said the birth of an alicorn is something Equestria has never seen Celestia and Luna were born before equestria was founded. I basically ignore gen 5 but it's cannon the Celestia and Luna are born alicorns. The crystal hart spell comic goes into who Cadance is and how she became an alicorn. I like Candace but I don't like what they did with her they made her look weak always calling Iwilight for help insid of fighting herself. Candace was Twilight foal sitter before Twilight was Celestia's student you can see it in the fall of Sunset shimmer comic.
I saw on one YT short about a theory that cadence could have originated from a previous princess. The video is titled "Is princess Cadence a reincarnation" and it goes over a comic backstory for Sombra and the princess at the time Princess Amore. And how she died but it was possible she could be put back together. Then comes our cadence or princess Mi Amore Cadenza. With similar names and similar cutie marks. Idk it's an interesting thought.
As a kid, Candance reminded me of my older cousin Kimberly, so she was naturally one of my favorite characters. I guess her being colored like strawberry ice cream helped
I love Cadence so much, she was my favorite character growing up. I think it's such a shame that her lore in the story is so scarce and what we do have is unreliable and not exactly canon. Like those comics don't make sense, supposedly Twilight got babysat by Candence BECAUSE Shining wanted to date her and Twilight knew Cadence loved her brother. And then they get together and become a couple, which Twilight probably knew about as they get together after Cadence babysits her ONCE and it's pretty much confirmed that she babysat her a lot so Twilight would've known. So then in Canterlot wedding, why did Twilight flip out about her brother marrying a princess? Like his high school sweetheart was a princess, it's insulting to imply that Twilight wouldn't put 2 and 2 together. And on top of that Canterlot wedding doesn't make sense in of itself because Twilight isn't stupid, she's close to Celestia and should be aware that there are only 3 Princesses and that Cadence is one of them.
I guess the comics were released way after the wedding episode which explains some inconsistency, but yeah, twilight not figuring things out is so out of character 😭
Princess cadance is a underrated princess in mlp fim when i was a little girl 8 years old i wanted the wedding toy of her and shining armor i saw the wedding episode when i was a kid
my theory is shes reborn as princess amore from the idw comic. thats the only theory i have because i dont really like alicorns with no backstory. the idw middle school is really cute as well
She’s the third princess obviously but there was a time that princess cadence just came out of nowhere like she was the third princess and that was a pretty big deal, including her marriage and stuff, but who really is she and we still don’t have a lot of answers we know she babysit twilight butwe don’t have a lot of stories about her like Celestia and Luna
the cartoon in the wedding episode twilight is clearly confused by the fact that cadance merries her brother, is she DID help them get together this would not be the case and feels like retcon
They didn't exist as characters before higher ups telling the team they need to make a pink princess to sell if they wanted Celestia toys to stay white. So really it has to be headcanoned fixed by either they broke up for a spell, or Twilight really was so lost in her own world by the time the pilot happens she didn't remember any meaningful details of her family and friends.
She understands eventually. She was just confused at first because they referred to her as "Princess Mi Amore Cadenza". Then, Shining Armor says...Twilight, that's Cadence. And she understands. It makes sense she wouldn't know her full name, as she was just a foal and it's easier for a kid to say and remember one name instead of a long one. She doesnt seem shocked after she knows it's Cadence, just excited. So it would still make sense regarding her helping them get together. She could have been thinking he was marrying someone else and didnt tell her he broke up with Cadence, or maybe they did break up or lose touch for a bit, and they didnt tell her they recently got back together.

the unfortunate situation with the comics is that the more I look into it, the more Im finding reason to believe that secondary education is not really a thing in Equestria. (all the more reason to put Cadence with the anxious Twilight as a foalsitter) I mean, the most damning thing is how both Spike and Twilight are clueless about highschool in Equestria Girls. (Maybe Twilight would be oblivious from specialty education, but Spike knows his shit) but literally the ONLY direct highschool reference in the show itself that I can find? Fluttershy's drawing of pony Revolutionary Girl Utena, and how real is pony anime??? Even the friendship school doesn't teach additional fundamental curriculum, its all just friendship. So that's Neigh Anything, one of the curest pieces of pony comics, basically invalidated. This is why I honestly wish the comics had just been their own take on g4 from the start. There's some fundamentally different ideas from the show that's a ton of fun on their own, but break when put under the pressure of the insane volume of G4 lore.
I love cadance so much. She’s such a wonderful older sister character. Her immense love is regal yet deceptively subtle. Yes she’s the princess of love but the way she constantly showcases love is so inspiring.
Wait, if Twilight helped Cadence with getting together with Shining Armor, how come she acted so shocked when he found out she was still seeing him a and getting married to him? I get Cadence going by her full princess name threw her off, but she never put together that the alicorn her big brother has been seeing for most of their lives would be the one he was marrying?
I love cadence and am fascinated by her 💖🎀 I think it’s fun to make up your own ideas about her backstory. I don’t like how flurry heart was born an alicorn though personally, I feel alicornhood should be earned, and she should have perhaps grown up as unicorn or pegasus and gotten wings/horn at her coronation.
I feel like the writers just added in another princess without thinking about the lore, and then realized it made no sense so they had to come up with something fast to explain her existence. The wedding and story wouldn't have been as grand if Cadence was just a normal pony
Candace was created by force from the higher ups. Such a tight leash that goes against her initial vision is what made Faust leave the show. Super early Celestia toys painted her coat in pink. They wanted her to be accurate to the show, so were told to make a pink princess to sell instead. Candace was the result.
Fun analysis! Cadence sure does bring up a lot of questions about alicorns and their lore, that was only made worse by the princess-ification of twilight xD and flurry heart. Regardless she’s a sweet character with a really beautiful design and singing voice, and a canterlot wedding is one of the best episodes of the show! Btw I love your BAB of her! I also have one I got second hand and I’d like to figure out how to get her wings to stand up straight
I don't think that flurry heart was the first naturally born aliucorn because i find it improbable that both Celestia and luna being sister were chosen. Point: 1. Both celestia and luna lack the ability to communicate with ordinary ponys which celestia openingly admited to never doing. 2. They are too old, if we go by their age then both twilight and furry heart should both be around by the time of new generation
Been working on an MLP story for probably about seven years now. I started it with the goal of creating my own history for a lot of the grey areas in MLP canon. Current backstory for Celestia and Luna is they were born in a distant city of alicorns (now lost). Ponies there were born as unicorns or pegasi, and had to earn what they lacked themselves (instead of, for example, being given wings like Twilight.) And sometimes a full alicorn would be born. Celestia and Luna were taken away from this place at a very young age, so they don't recall much about it. I'm sure a lost city of alicorns is an idea that's already been used somewhere, but it's become too engrained in my story to change it now.
@purplepartytigerd1598 in the new mlp series on Netflix, the main villain actually comes from a place where alicorns lived (I can't remember the name off the top of my head) and knew Celestia and Luna as fillies. Your theory isn't too far off. The new series isn't as good as fim, but they do touch on it quite a bit throughout the series.
I absolutely love the Cadence/Shining Armor backstory from the comics, definitely two of my favorite issues... it's so funny and Andy Price's art is amazing
Princess Cadance is one of my favourite Alicorns and ponies of MLP fim since season 2. I love her character, traits and her design is so cute. I love her title the princess of love, the best foal sitter turn sister in law for Twilight and wife of Shinning armor I really love her story throughout the series.
All I'll say is that out of all the Alicorn princesses, Cadence never got anywhere near as much love as Celestia and Luna. And I too can understand why she got so much hate because she was such an out of nowhere character just like Shining Armor both of whom people believed should've been mentioned at some point in either season 1 or early on in season 2.
The other day I was scrolling through the wiki fandom pages for the show. I found Cadence's. I'm not sure if it is reliable or not but it goes into the comics as well as the show. According to this wiki page, Cadence is apparently distantly related to Princess Amore and Amore was the last ruler of the Crystal Empire before Sombra took over. I don't know if there is a time line for how long Sombra was in control or how much time had passed between when Amore ruled and when Cadence took over. If this is true, there's still a lot of unknown questions. How many generations were in between the two and how exactly are they related? Like if Amore had relatives, what happened to them? How were they able to continue the family tree? Could these ponies relation to Amore be a part of why Cadence was abandoned as a young pegasus? The shift of princesses is also pretty interesting. In present Equestria, to be a princess it has to be earned, but back then, it was through relations. In the early ages of Equestria, the two princesses we are aware of were both unicorns, these unicorns being Amore and Platinum. But as soon as Celestia and Luna became Alicorns was when the idea that only alicorns were princesses and suddenly Cadence also became an alicorn. If the idea of her being related to Amore is canon, maybe her becoming an alicorn was always meant to happen to fit with the modernized idea of what type of pony is a princess? Cadence's cutie mark does resemble the Crystal Heart. If Cadence is distantly related to Amore, maybe that is why her cutie mark is what it is and why her talent is tied to love as the Crystal Empire lore is tied to love as well and also why she was placed in charge of the Crystal Empire? I don't know if any type of media ever explained why Cadence was suddenly taking over the Crystal Empire, but it could be speculated that either the kingdom just needed somepony to lead them or maybe there could have been a deeper meaning.

Oh god I forgot about the blood relations too, that just raises further questions because it implies at the very least either lunas had foals, or that either one of them had spouses at one point, element too big to gloss over 😖

If they want to sell toys , then they need to be more Productive in giving Characters back stories. People like Characters with back stories. If they want to sell more toys They need to get with their program. Their excuse of just wanting to sell toys doesn't fly.

They really should have kept the Alicorn count to just luna and celestia I had come to terms with the contrary but the last three episodes really broke all manner of logic sunbutt and moon butt are thousands of years old but then they just retire WHAT!?! 😤 I know I know it's been said, but at least the comics did a slightly better job with candance
It was obvious that the final goal for Twilight was to become the ruler, it's the whole point of her journey, to become an empathetic and wise leader, something the sisters couldn't do (they suck at communicating to each other)

Of all the pony characters in my little pony friendship is magic, Cadance is my favourite along with Twilight, sort of Fluttershy, and Starlight after she reformed, but my favourite character is Spike just because I find him cute a lot. Just not all the episodes though anyways. Twilight is also the pony that took care of him too (well sort of Princess Celestia too as mentioned in the comic story of when Twilight tells the other main five of how she got Spike), which I’m also thinking (this is mainly based off some fan fiction stories about Spike), that Twilight and Celestia were kind of adoptive mothers to him (even though it was confirmed in sparkle’s seven that they are adoptive siblings, I still think Twilight and Spike are adoptive mother and son along with Celestia too) which is why I consider Twilight my favourite as well. But anyways back to Cadance, after watching the season 4 episode, Equestria games (which is now mainly my favourites of the episodes), I feel like there should’ve been more episodes with Spike and Cadance together after the third time that they were together, which is times they are a changeling just because I agree the second one with them wasn’t that good due to Spike being whatever and also since Twilight and Cadance get along, they should’ve had a bit more for Spike with her too next to Twilight. Also (in some other fan fiction stories with Spike and Cadance together), it was likely that Candace also foal sitted Spike as well, some time after Twilight hatched him and was of course at the school for gifted unicorns.
