Re: the “unkillable/s” drums: Frank wrote on the drums, not Gerard. It was near the anniversary of his near death bus accident in Sydney that lead to him having continued chronic pain and PTSD. Frank also posted on Instagram, going to the spot of the accident and flipping it off. Anyways I’m really emotional about Frank Iero writing “unkillable” on the drums after almost dying and everyone needs to know it.

You didn’t touch on it, but “UNKILLABLE” in Sydney is a reference to Frank surviving a horrific accident in the city several years ago. He was run over by a bus and ended up in hospital for weeks. Instead of saying “Trust me” during Not Okay, Frank screamed “You’ll never kill me” and then on the second night, Frank was the one who added the ‘S’ onto the drumhead to make it into “UNKILLABLES.”

Also there was this huge conspiracy in the fandom when they broke up that they were going to come back and they were going to do it in 2019 (which they DID but then covid struck). A) because Danger Days took place in 2019 and B) because Gerard once upon a time said that he always wanted to follow in Smashing Pumpkin's footsteps be together for 12 years, break up, and reunite after 7 years. Which they did. + the whole 'fake your death' thing made everyone insane. Jury out if it was actually intentional but it's insane

Two important things to note about the Dublin shows on the tour, on night 1 Gerard made a joke about the queen of England prompting an entire crowd of emos to chant "FUCK THE QUEEN" a chant that was also repeated the next night when he tried to explain himself which was magical, and also on night 2 Frank (and maybe Gerard for the first song my memory is hazy on that part) wore t-shirts that acknowledged and commemorated the victims of a mass shooting that had taken place in a school in Texas the day before

16:30 their shirt says “ALL HAIL THE RAT KING” with a print of a rat king in the center. A rat king is the term for when 5 or more rats get stuck in a very confined space and get their tails knotted together, generally because of attempts to escape that involve crawling around or over each other. They’re commonly associated with class disparity and how the rich make life hell for the poorer people. I think the motifs speak for themselves on that one Edit 2/4/23: I just found this EXCELLENT video on rat kings if anyone is interested, she explains more about the class/wealth thing as well: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jo8jlfVZ194.html

MCR and paramore both making BIG statements with their time on stage at WWWY fest is something that can be so personal. But no really Hayley making a speech about how the nostalgia of the festival is weird because the scene wasn't always safe (and how they found a kinship with my chemical romance during those days as both bands were alienated in different but very normal at the time ways) and then immediately after their set having MCR come on the stage with their stunt must have been FANTASTIC to witness live. I wish I could have been there god damn.
@sezzac155
@sezzac155 Год назад
Agreed. Wasn't there, but to this day I think Paramore or at least Hayley was in on what MCR was about to do as secret keepers or something. Because like even some of MCR's crew members dressed up and were part of the stunt as the band were arriving on stage and so they would have likely needed others to temporarily fill in those 'regular' crew member roles. Like to make sure no else who didn't need to see the crew members in addition to the band did not. They kept the stunt really damn quite considering they apparently had freaking posters made for the stunt/WWWY is the point i'm trying to make. They planned this to the extreme even though it's a relatively simple thing to pull off. And Hayley's speech while being earnest and real to Paramore also acted as a heads up to the audience. Because like Gerard has made similar speeches before. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it would be an AWESOME way to acknowledge/continue the still obviously there kinship.
@FromRussia_With_Love
@FromRussia_With_Love Год назад
Well...MCR yes, Paramore not so much. Paramore is the same garbage as it's always been. Hayley is on some bullshit talking about "the scene." She's famous entirely because her rich parents paid for her to have a music career.

@@valcadash No, she's not an excellent musician and vocalist. She can barely play one instrument. Apparently her family wasn't struggling enough that they couldn't toss money around to get her a career when nobody was interested. @Karnickel93
@Karnickel93 Год назад
@@FromRussia_With_Love Since when is "Singing" or "Vocals" not considered an instrument itself? I don't much care for paramore these days, but Hayley can sing and not every musician needs to master multiple instruments. 15:34 The "I heart MCR" on the drum is because Warrington is very close to Manchester (Gerard seemed to think we were actually in Manchester) and MCR is what Manchester gets abbreviated to. The first time I visited I just thought everyone was really into My Chemical Romance and that was why "I heart MCR" was everywhere 😭
@jl8417
@jl8417 Год назад
I go to uni in Greater Manchester and if you're not from the area I can't emphasis enough how much 'I heart MCR' has been plastered everywhere since 2017 Like it's on murals, merchandise, buses and yeah, if you didn't know MCR was short for Manchester, it looks like someone on the city council was a big My Chemical Romance fan... The reason I heart MCR is a thing, is it actually became so widespread after a terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert Given how much 9/11 imagery was in the US portion of the tour, I think it's probably a 3 fold reference 1) Just generally using an image/slogan that's commonplace around the area 2) A nod to MCR standing for both Manchester and My Chemical Romance 3) Another reference to terrorism (though Warrington is not in Manchester, I am glad they went with the MCR reference and not the other incident that actually happened in Warrington, much more controversial😓)

The red costume from The Phantom Of The Opera is supposed to be the red death from Edgar Allen Poe's The Masque Of The Red Death which is about rich people who during a plauge locks themselves in a big house to party and essentialy ignore everyone outside suffering. Same, I was reluctant to get into them as I was introduced to them by a friend at about 13 and it was too much for my still-generic-radio-pop-enjoying little brain, and then when I realised they were a bad friend and broke off the friendship I associated MCR with them for years (also Gerard looks a lot like the girl who bullied me at school asdfghjkl). But I’ve finally healed and processed those parts of my past and have come around and finally given their full discography a listen beyond the handful of songs I already knew and liked and oh my god I wish I’d given them a chance sooner, a lot of their music Is my taste now! I’m annoyed as I have a friend who I was living with when MCR announced their reunion tour and they wanted to go but the price was too high for us broke students at the time, especially for me as a casual fan (also the closest show to us, Milton Keynes, is kinda far and we would’ve had to book hotels and stuff too etc). I went to a Green Day show with a friend as a teen almost 15 years ago specifically to see MCR (they were opening) and, to this day, it was one of the most influential and punk moments I experienced that completely shaped the way I thought of myself and protecting others at shows /calling out predatory musicians. Gerard started talking about girls flashing rock stars and throwing bras at the stage which felt uncomfortable but was normal/expected at the time, then pivoted to something like "and if anyone says shit like that to you, you say FUCK YOU AND THANKS FOR THE VENOM!", then went into the song. I remember my friend and I staring at each other in shock then going fucking feral, I still get emotional when I think about it. (Green Day came on after and did exactly what Gerard was criticizing while the front man stuck his hand in his pants and touched himself in front of mostly children). I learned so much in an instant from something he might have perceived as talking nonsense on stage, MCR forever has my love and respect 🖤

I bought my MCR tickets pre covid, at the start of a relationship that quickly turned toxic and abusive, with the intent of going together. By the time covid came around, I was fully aware of the manipulation and abuse happening in the relationship and was so confused but so relieved when we had to live separately. Soon I broke up with them and felt a bit lost. I ended up going to MCR, Dublin, alone (first time going to a concert on my own) and it was honestly so beautiful. I was so sad and alone in that relationship, and by the time the concert came around I had found someone that I truly loved, I had come out as non-binary, and had healed from the abuse. It was full circle. It felt so beautiful and I was so wonderfully emotional the whole time. So yeah. Gerald's queerness means a lot to me and was a huge part in my coming out and healing from the abuse. Also, on the first night of the Dublin show, Gerard talked about how they felt so restricted and the band felt joyless. They said that this concert was the first time they felt like they could go wild and fully get into it without fearing about losing or damaging their voice or being 'too much'. He proceeded to shout their voice raw for the whole concert, saying that it was their first time in a long time to feel like they can have fun. It was incredible to witness. (and then there was the whole 'fuck the queen moment'. incredible)

About the Sydney drums. It was the first time not Gerard wrote on the drum, but Frank. He also added the "s" on the second day there. As you may know Frank got involved in a bus accident IN SYDNEY, having been dragged under a bus and only having survived because of the rucksack he was wearing. He talked about having struggled with the thoughts that he didnt actually survive, and that the life he was living was HIS version of the afterlife after he had been killed in the accident. This was the first time he was back in Sydney to play shows, and it´s him announcing that he is alive. He also posted a video on instagram of him returning to the street where it happened, where he put a black rose down on the sidewalk and spit on it.

The Crow is a story about a man who, like the male demolition lover, is brought back from the dead to have revenge on the men who killed him and his wife. But I begged them to stay and watch the film and I remember it had a big impact in me. She was this young woman being in charge of an army and becoming a national hero. It impressed me because it was different to most things I have watched before, it was a woman who was not waiting to be saved by Prince Charming. It blew my mind. And I loved that, I also became a little obsessed with Milla Jovovich after that. And I’m happy that I was fortunate enough to see Gerard’s Joan of Arc costume live, because I attended that concert and without exaggeration, it was one of the best days of my life ❤

As someone who owns all the danger days comic books, they take the album from amazing to genius. The story is a lot darker than the songs seem on the surface, and it is so amazing how intricately the songs and story tie together.

i've always seen the album, the first comics, and National Anthem as three different universes lmao. of course the album and the first comics are closer in similarity (so they might actually be connected, who knows) but NA is definitely either a predecessor to the fab four or is its own world entirely since it was made from the early concepts that eventually became DD.

the part about their WWWY looks is making me reel in horror. I recently turned 23, marking 10 years since the age that my emo phase began and I've been listening to a lot of the songs I used to love then for nostalgia, but seeing the pics of elderly MCR and hearing you talk about the theming of that show (and the tour as a whole) has snapped me back to reality with regards to how I've been looking back on that stage of my own life. I was truly miserable, and I never could have conceived at that age that I would ever be as happy as I am at this point in my life. There is a lot to be said about the way we tend to fetishize our own past suffering for the sake of fondly recalling a time where we simply had fewer responsibilities. I'd much rather be the happy adult I am than the depressed child I was.

I feel the same - I dont look too fondly on my past back either, while working to get away from that time and not let it define me. So a whole nostalgia trip back to that time will always give me mixed feelings - whilst there were things that I would like to remember (like discovering this band that I still listen to to this day), there are far more things that I would love to leave behind and grow past it.

I was at the Corona Capital in Mexico City where he used the Joan of Arc outfit and I just want to make a couple of clarifications for your video. The date of this concert was November 18 ( not 28), they usually make this massive festival on that date because on November 20th is the celebration of the Mexican Revolution and It’s a Holiday, so people of other cities (such as myself) can travel to Mexico City to attend the festival. The other thing is that the text in the drums reads “Muy feugo” that doesn’t have an exact translation but I personally don’t think has anything to do with faith (“fe” in spanish), for me it’s a misspell of “fuego” (“fire” in Spanish). While “Muy” is the spanish word for “very”, so I think this could translate as “very fire” (?) I think it could be a reference to Joan of Arc’s death by burning. For me it makes sense. After one of the song he even said “Merci”, it caught my attention because I speak french too but we mexicans speak spanish (obviously) and at first I though he had made a mistake because after that he kept saying “Gracias”. But then I realized it had to do with the Joan Of Arc character he was trying to portrait. Very clever of them. Aside of this, I want to say that I enjoyed a lot this video and I appreciate you for taking the time and effort to do it. And, that to me as a 31 year old, seeing them live was something I did not expect to experience but that night was amazing, mindblowing, breathtaking and all the positive adjectives you all could think of. It was the best night ever and I have high hopes for the release of a new album ❤

The flies, the no-nonsense all caps font, the earthy greens and yellows, the ideas of SWARM and DECAY, sometimes having the words printed backwards, and how all of these visual ideas tie into the single art for Foundations of Decay, not to mention Gerard's little pedestal of effects that they play with throughout the show, and the sometimes minutes of droning "swarm" noise that happen between songs. Vampires have actually been used by MCR as metaphors for people in Hollywood and the music industry too, and if you read You Look Like Death: Tales from the Umbrella Academy there's a whole underground vampire amusement park right under Downtown Hollywood full of vampires dressed exactly like Bela Lugosi's Dracula. This book came out in March 2021. It's all about the people who are just there for you to use you.

As a pansexual, she/they, emo, ex-cheerleader (yes I was a cheerleader who listened to MCR every day and hated most people at the time and was not popular other than being the "tall/big cheerleader") I greatly appreciate this video. I always felt connected to Gerard and the band's gender fluidity and helped me as I worked through my identity and queerness. Anyway, great video, and MCR is still my favorite band (and Danger Days also has effected me forever)

My body is not ready. I watch 5 minutes of this video, had a quick cry because I missed the Chicago show to go to my shitty retail job, then watched the rest uninterrupted. As a person fellow person who has continued to be obsessed with mcr in a way that few understand; this is QUALITY fan tribute/analysis. May death never stop you, Strange ❤. Fun MCR Fact: based on Gerard's description of the show he was working on at Cartoon Network before he saw 9/11, he most likely helped make the show My Gym Partner is a Monkey. (From his poadcast interview with Brett Easton Ellis).

35:32 i was at sunrise and it was such a wild experience. gerard was chilling on stage but ppl were being so rude to them it really hurt. lots of chanting of “take it off” and “we payed to see you” it just rubbed me the wrong way the whole time. they took the sheet ghost off after about three songs.

As David Lynch always says, there is no greater pain for a creative person than losing an idea, so I really appreciate this video being brought to us, despite of it's initial deletion. As frustrating as that must have been, how it turned out now is great.

This is like a video made personally for me. I spent months analysing the set lists with my friend. I went to the 2nd Brooklyn show and WWWY Sunday. I went to show with many people who meant a lot to me. This tour meant so much to me. Thanks for bringing another layer to it. I am mostly just so happy to see them having fun with the music again. The scene was so toxic but the music has meant so much to me for most of my life. I am happy to people who made it aren't suffering anymore.

I’m a 16 year old goth kid who never really listened to mcr, but I was dragged to an mcr concert (the recent Tokyo one) by my emo friend and, I gotta say… I’m definitely a fan now. Gerard’s energy on stage is just so amazing.

I am an old lady... I remember "I'm Not Okay" was released, and I was in love. MCR and Good Charlotte got me through some very hard times ("Hold On"was released while I was in a psych ward) and I'm pretty stoked to see them return!

I bought my ticket for the tour pre-covid and it was the first concert I have ever gone to completely alone - and it was really like a religious experience. I first saw MCR live all the way back in 2005 and it was the same feeling almost. (I also saw them in 2010 but it wasn’t as intense for me, and in 2015 I saw Gerard solo which was totally different!) being alone and being able to experience all the feelings openly & without worrying about judgement was so cathartic. I recommend everyone go to a concert alone at least once in their life!

MCR is a band i've always respected but never really gotten into, but now that i actually know stuff about it besides the album names, i might start listening to it more actively. weird how within the soan of a single video i went from a country fanatic to emo. 42:08 i literally thought to myself "if they were british, i'm convinced they would've also done a Princess Diana look"

Saw them in Paris early in the tour. We were already going "so... is he going to wear something crazy this time?" but no, just that Mickey Mouse tshirt (which, mind you, was still pretty funny considering the whole rat theme thing during the beginning of the tour). We had no idea how insane the costumes would get later lol

Thank you SO MUCH for this breakdown. I was at the Brisbane and Melbourne shows and it was awesome to see the whole tour laid out like this. I don't know if it's been mentioned but the Unkillable drumhead was a reference to Frank's accident in Sydney some years ago -- he hashtagged a post about it with the word.

honestly danger days is fucking crack like you said. i could be so fucking sad one day but turn on anything from danger days and i’ll fuckin jam out. that album honestly changed my life, especially during a very critical and sensitive time in my life. secondly during when we were young, my dumbass didn’t even realize he was wearing a bright red outfit until my friend took a video because i’m so damn short and the big screens were in black and white i can’t even lie, i wasnt expecting the kids from yesterday even though that’s LITERALLY PART OF THE FESTIVAL’S TITLE and i bawled my eyes out. the way that album changed my life came flooding back to me in that moment and everything felt like it fell into place edit: i remember seeing the oct 24th show outfits and feeling bad about spending a shit ton of money on the festival, hayley definitely made me feel better at the end with her, as always, touching words. putting the whole nostalgia theme aside, i was so fucking happy to finally see mcr. finally being able to see the band that changed my life, yknow? i really tried to put the whole festival theme aside and just enjoy seeing bands that i really liked. anyways sorry for being sappy i just really appreciate this video teya and i need you to know!!

the cheerleader outfit could have been a connection to the im not okay music video but yeah im stretching too also the jackie kennedy outfit could also be a reference to an outfit that nicky wire has worn before (both have the patterned headscarf, bulky sunglasses and dress) the watchmen drumkit, whilst the obvious reference and by far the most likely considering gerard has said in the past that thats their favourite comic series, also reminds me of the get up kids, and james dewees (their lead singer) has been an on and off session keyboardist for mcr as always, thankyou father strange
@bwaybabyrose

My first thought was also Nicky Wire, but I know Mikey and Gerard are fans of the Manics so I think if it was referencing Nicky it would be a bit more obvious.

Was missing the tour fun, ended up here. What a lovely walk down memory lane. I went to several of these shows and every one of them was amazing. Cheerleader Gerard was inarguably the most iconic look of the era, but everything about WWWY was absolutely history. Long live my favorite band, may MCR5 and/or a live album bless us soon!

That tour flung me back into a full blown obsession all over again. I got into My Chemical Romance as a 11 year old and they had just broken up ironically enough. It brought me fully back into being feral. I wrote manifestations for the NC show and literally made everyone at my work to kiss the paper.
