I still remember my mom telling me when I was little that pokemon was satanic/witchcraft. And now we both play Pokemon Go religiously (pun intended) ten years later. No one is safe from pikachu, no one
Oh no hahah But PoGo is amazing! I can't wait for the Christmas events. Couldn't get a shiny wild event pokemon last year, so this year the hunt is on!
My mom said the same thing and told me it (along with D&D) would turn me gay..fast forward 20ish years and I’m a bi satanist so maybe she was right all along 😂
Quick comment on Lucario: mega evolution is canonically a forced evolution and often drives the pokemon into madness either through constant pain, power surges affecting the brain or just straight up madness through power. With Lucario, it's madness came from the power surge affecting its brain
Oh boy. The Mew movie with Ash turning to stone and the pokemon crying will still make me cry today as a adult... The movie overall gives me a strange vibe as the backstory is so mature compared to what pokemons target audience it should be. Probably the reason why it already left a stark impression on me even as a child. I feel like a lot of children anime movies around the year 2000 are strangely mature
YES! a lot of them touch on darker stuff. as a kid the mewtwo movie scared me a lot haha and i blame the pikachu beat down for making me extremely emotional about sad scenes.
From what I've heard, they were allowed to get away with more stuff in the early days - at least, before Electric Solider Porygon drew a lot of critical attention towards them, and they started overseeing the anime more closely.
Oh my god, I forgot how emotional that scene was! And that strangely profound quote from Mewtwo: "I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant; it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are."
hearing about how bizarre the manga sounds is honestly really making me want to check it out... I don't know why I never did tbh but it sounds like such a wild ride
it’s so wild! and the art is pretty nice. i haven’t heard about it until recently and then read it. a lot of the chapters are super short so it’s easy to read in between stuff 😃
It’s honestly a banger!!! I’ve read the first few volumes and they’re just great. I don’t even think it’s just because I love Pokémon, they’re just very high quality in general.
I read red/blue and yellow, and it was really fun. The more mature tone fits pretty well into the series, and having different characters each gen is way better!
rs & dppt are the best ones imo! read r/s for romance ( ruby/sapphire was the ship that rewired my brain chemistry as a child...) and dppt for friendship :)
I really appreciate pokemon for the darker stories honestly, I think it helps children understand the world a bit better than a story with all fluff cause children understand this stuff a lot earlier than adults realize, I think something safe like pokemon with slightly darker stories is a great stepping stone, stuff like goosebumps and are you afraid of the dark really helped a lot of my early fears and getting over them. I probably watched my vhs tape collections of episodes 15-24 (I think) a billion times I loved tower of terror and ghost of maidens peak sooo much
Completely agree! Also, it makes it so much more enjoyable to rewatch. I think adding darker elements without being inappropriate is super difficult, but done well in some parts and especially early Pokémon! Also, those nine episodes are perfection!
i just recently binged the new pokémon journeys series and honestly i really enjoyed it. i haven’t watched much pokémon in probably 5ish years but before that i had watched every episode of every series until the sun and moon series so i may need to do that next so i can say i’ve watched the entire series
I can’t speak to if this is true, but Brock’s English voice actor (Eric Stuart) said that the reason they changed “riceball” to “jelly donut” is because the Japanese studio specifically requested that the English dub, as well as the dubs of other languages, change it to whatever is more culturally relevant. To make Pokémon as widespread as possible and so that kids could relate no matter where they’re from. I’m not here to defend every choice 4kids made, god knows they’ve had some questionable decisions made, but that at least I must speak up for.
Ohhh that makes so much sense. I am sorry I blamed them haha but on a side note, my favorite 4kids shenanigans are the tokyo mew mew raps haha that song just randomly pops into my head every other week
@@plushiepath yeah, say what you will about 4kids animation but their theme songs were bangers 😂 I loved the English dub theme song to TMM even if the dub itself was terrible.
4Kids was notorious to cutting and censoring shows. Even, if Japanese surely gave them some freedom (otherwise they would just take the series from them) more of it spanned from the fact that they didn't care as much about global release as they do nowadays. What's more likely is that producers lied to the voice actors. Like there is difference between "oh yeah you can change some things to make it more accessible" and "erase any cultural factor of the show and replace it with nonsensical bs". 4Kids are fully to blame for it.
Thank you so much for actually covering the Adventures manga! I feel like other RU-vid videos that address it only get to the point where Koga's Arbok gets sliced, react, and stop. Thank you for reminding me the Ruby Sapphire arc was not a fever dream and actually happened! (until Celebii reset everything, of course)
I really hate the Arbok scene, not does it doesnt represent the Manga accurately (it never got this violent again) and it makes Green look straight up evil
thank you! ruby sapphire was definitely something ahah everything with arcues is also super fever dreamish and i lost it when Shaymin teamed up with Cyrus. i never expected that to happen.
Hi I’m sorry I always comment critiques-I do like your videos!! I just wanted to point out at 4:21 you should have another flash warning or give a verbal flash warning for the entire segment with a time stamp to skip if you plan on showing scenes like that multiple times! Also at 7:10, the anti-Japan movement in South Korea (as you probably know) was due to Japan’s war crimes against South Korea during WWII that have continuously been denied by officials and either dismissed or glorified. I just wanted to say the context is definitely important, that’s all! I’m super excited to watch the rest of the deep dive!❤️
no worries! i am really happy about feedback! and yes! you’re completely right. i had help editing that segment and we slowed it down by a lot but there should have been another warning. i’ll try editing it in the youtube editor in a bit (i hope it’ll let me) and yes! i should have given more context for the anti japan movement! it’s super important to show both sides of a story! thanks for watching and thank you so much for your feedback! i really appreciate it! 😊
To add to that - for people who don't know history - Japanese were actually more cruel and as bloody as Germans during Second War (especially against Chinese and Koreans). What Japanese did was way more inhumane and disturbing, as they acted more akin to savages. Which is telling you something, because the crimes Germans committed were already pure evil.
I got chills at the idea of a Movie where Team Rocket is fighting to survive against a world wide pokemon uprising. - Probably the coolest "new" idea for the series I have ever thought about. - Sad that we will never get something like it.
This video proves that Pokémon did grow up with its fans that’s the point of all this dark stuff in the franchise It didn’t disappoint me I’m a true fan ride or die forever
Someone who actually gives the Manga a decent job covering the Manga rather than just pointing at the same three example (Arbok cut in half, crucified gym leaders, and Zinnia being stabbed) to show it’s dark? IMPOSSIBLE! In all seriousness though glad that section was decent sized and details as I feel so many just overlock it or, as stated above, always use the same example. The first few arcs are still definitely some of my favorites since it’s the only time (as far as I’m aware) that major character like Gym Leaders are members of team rocket and the Elite Four is a genuine threat. I always knew Agatha was secretly evil!
thank you so much! and yeah i loved that twist. i liked Sabrina in the anime but was sad that she disappeared after her 3 episodes and generally a lot of cool characters are one-offs in the anime and games (except Cynthia. she always shows up and scares everyone.) But the manga fleshed them out more and gave sabrina the screen (page?) time she deserved. also hell yes, agatha was 👌 and oak's battle outfit never gets old.
I love your videos, but you got some minor details wrong. Ash and Latias DON'T have a baby. Latias just gives Ash a kiss. That's all. In the end credits, it's a whole other family of a father Latios and his twin Latios and Latias enter the city to protect it if the Latias we've followed for the whole movie can't protect it. The Mastermind Mirage "movie" was really a 10th anniversary special released as a made-for-TV movie. Other than that, great job.
Thanks for the correction! I felt like the kiss implied it, and I didn't know that there were "backups." But it makes more sense that there's a second family
@@plushiepath No worries. Takeshi Shudo will be missed. His time working on the anime and the first three movies was astounding and phenomenal. He sadly died many years after being let go from the writing team from a brain bleed due his heavy use of controlled substances (such as tranquilizers) and smoking.
Props to bringing up the XY arc, barely anyone does that when it comes to this topic. Though for context on Y's head getting crushed by a Pinsir, that was actually Essentia who took Y's form as she has ditto-like transformation powers. She impersonated Y and tried to trick X, but X wasn't fooled and ordered his Pinsir to attack Essentia, and of course she survives because of her suit. Funnily enough the one thing that made X realize that he wasn't talking to Y was the fact that the fake Y called him "dear".
YOOOO ive been waiting to see another video from this channel, was watching the other ones between my exams a couple weeks ago 😭 literally saved me from insanity, the exam hall was way too quiet
I think scarlet and violet actually added in a lot more charm the games were missing, especially since while the game does hold your hand a bit they literally let you just go and kick in the last gyms doors even thought your team isn't ready yet, thought they might end up that way if you go through the whole game. Also the part at the end.
Personally it took a lot of charm and comfort other games had. Mostly due to how unfinished parts of the games are, especially UI for a lot of features. It's major downgrade from PLA in many instances (which mostly comes from the fact that both games were made simultaneously).
@@mjm3091 To each their own as it is. I havn't played a game since Black and white 2 as I said, and if people enjoyed the older games more they can go back to play those, and I'm sure soon this style of game will be left in the dust and you can enjoy the next game.
As a kid I was scared of hunter J's smash bros trophy thing. I remember seeing pokemon being turned to stone and the look of fear on their faces. Them they get kidnapped and you see the trainers get their friend taken away from them. It was horrible
THANK YOUUUUU literally just started rewatching indigo league and playing scarlet!! love the vids you have such high quality content i thought you’d been doing youtube for YEARS everything is so well researched and just very well presented and i appreciate it a lot super nice to listen while cleaning etc. AMAZING!!!!
Remember to watch in Japanese so you can perceive whole cultural spectrum of the series also to listen to all the amazing music US dub cut out for no reason.
I feel a big reason Pokemon LA was the first Pokémon game I’ve picked up since I was a kid, was because it finally gave me that taste of “danger” I’ve always wanted from a Pokémon game. Being able to fall and get damage, Pokémon being able to attack, and swarm me in groups. I’m hoping we get more spin off games similar to Pokémon LA down the line.
me too - i also like its atmosphere and that every pokemon no matter how belitted it is in current gens has impact and is respected by people because it's powerful. i like scarlet/violet a lot but i had hoped it would go a bit more in the arceus direction!
"There was a flashing scene that causes seizures and other symptoms in many children" - shows the strobe effect in question - "Then the news showed clips and triggered them all over again - shows the clips AGAIN -
Pokemon has a lot of one-off manga that are untranslated and range from wholesome fun to "what." My theory is that these have little oversight from executives. I actually bought the entirety of ReBurst with plans to work on a full fan translation of all 8 volumes since it's super intriguing to me, but there's little in regards to translated chapters available online. Diamond and Pearl Adventure(The one by Shigekatsu Ihara) is one that is officially available in English and imo, super underrated. Mitsumi and Hareta are some of my favorite Pokemon protagonists. Sadly, there's not a lot of documentation for many of these manga, which is a shame since they at least deserve preservation.
That's so cool - and yeah there's so little for ReBurst, but the concept is super intriguing. It's sad that the Pokémon manga is so underrated - hopefully, it gets more popular or like you said, preserved
Oh hey, I read that diamond and pearl manga!! I'd used to get it mixed up with the other manga lol. It was pretty good, but there was a weird amount of jokes about... The protagonist biting team galactic's butts...? That was odd lol
The on the end of the Pokemon heroes movie: The Bianca that kisses ash isn't said to be FOR SURE latias. It's hinted that it could be OR it could be the actual girl Bianca, who is the person Latias takes the form of. As for the latias and latios at the end of the movie, those are not confirmed to be Latias' kids. In fact it's more hinted to likely be the spirits of Latios brother and possibly the father who sacrificed himself as said in the movie OR it is an entirely new group of latios and latias showing that the latias sister wont be lonely after all. I'm unsure where this information of them being her kids was gotten from??? I for one have never heard that interpretation before this video...
true! it could have been bianca but since she didn’t speak i assumed it was latias. the kid theory has been around for a little while and i always assumed they implied that there’s a new gen guarding the city and since we didn’t see any other family it made sense to me that she had the kids. and maybe ash’s kiss inspired their formation
The music around the 16 minute mark has to be a version of the steel samurai theme from ace attorney. However this version I’m not familiar with as its less peppy than the other versions.
They didn’t lost any charm they just created new charm Society’s obsession with recapturing a franchise’s old charm while ignoring the new charm that the franchise did create is just so sad Pokémon still has charm it’s just new Who cares if it doesn’t have the same charm as the original games if this new charm is just as special as the old charm Everyone has become way to cold and cynical that they completely forgot the message of the franchise If only they could stop being scrooges and open their eyes and actually see that
One thing I don’t see many people talking about when it comes to this kinda stuff is the mental states of some of the characters. Ex: Cyrus. He wants to go to a new world as he doesn’t understand/like human emotions, and Team Galactic is created. Cyrus is so determined to accomplish his goal that he bombs the lakes to get the legends. In the DP anime he goes into the dimension portal via his own choice without telling the admins. (I’ll assume it’s the distortion world until proven otherwise) The admins lose communication with him, and honestly most likely think that he d1ed (if he didn’t get ravaged by Giratina the little to no plants and resources in the DW would’ve meant that he would’ve d1ed anyway) The admins must think that this conclusion is what Cyrus wanted to do the whole time, and would most likely mourn knowing their characters. To the Galactic Admins and those on the outside of the portal, it seemed that Cyrus’s goal was to k1ll himself. And honestly, that would make sense, at least in my mind. I.E: Cyrus doesn’t understand human emotions, to the point of being incredibly upset over it (his mini breakdown in Platinum), and wanted to go to a new world without emotions and spirit. Everyone outside the portal most likely thinks that this ‘new world’ was the afterlife or something. I’m no expert on character so I’ll let you decide.
I agree. I like how the Manga shows us more of Cyrus and his mental state. Especially since the games also hint at his parents being extremely mean to the point that his granddad blames himself for not saving him. He probably lacks emotions because he was thought to subdue them or saw them as useless because he was helpless against his parents (Small spoiler, late in the anime after teaming up with Dia, Shaymin helps him because he learns to express gratitude!)
Your videos are so so complete and good! I like your accent and voice!! Thank you so much for putting so much work into this and your other videos. They are all impressive and fun!
The whole Sabrina arc... ngl, I was never scared of that as a kid, I always thought that was fascinating and I remember at least one time I pretended that Sabrina was my friend and she'd turn us into dolls so we could fly around on a paper airplane. Aaaand now I self-ship with her and I've drawn at least one pic where she turned my trainer self-insert into a doll upon request sooooooo... XD
I'm in love with your content. I've listened to all your vids at work, they're well produced for such a short time on the platform. Nice work, and I can't wait to see what else you wanna talk about! 💕 (There's also a proud/rewarding feeling to be one of the first to find a channel like this and watch it grow.)
18:11 Funny timing about TPC acknowledging adult fans wanting darker themes in the main games, right as Scarlet and Violet just released. I won't spoil it here but OMG the story in the S/V post game hits HARD, make sure you have a box of tissues for when you get to that point (or just reuse the box of tissues you needed for the Titans story path lol)
im sorry for erm actuallying you but 1:48 pokemon protagonists from the games aren't usually ten. the youngest protagonists with a confirmed age are the kanto and alola kids who are 11. the hoenn protagonists are 12, the protagonists in bw and b2w2 are 14, the protagonists in pla are 15, and the protagonists in xy are 17.
thank you! and don’t worry! i am glad you corrected me 😊 i thought about the anime, but i was talking about the games so i should have clarified! it’s cool that the protagonist have different ages. i am really sorry for messing that info up!
Hearing about his original plans for the anime ending made me so sad, especially the second one. Imagining a show with such global influence conveying a message of anti-capitalism, pro-nature and animal rights could have genuinely changed history in a huge way.
This- this makes me so very very happy, and we're getting multiple parts! Ah! Your spoiling us, Plushie!! ( Also the BOTW music in the bg- major slay )
What a great deep dive into the dark side on Pocket Monsters! Who'd have thought bug catching could be so disturbing haha loved this so much, subscribed!
@@plushiepath I’ve always wanted to check it out but never got round to it! The main series games have a lot of dark stuff, mainly the earlier games obviously but sun and moon has some spooky mimikyu plot which is cool, I think the Pokédex entries have always been overly dark… even in the newest games!
Shoutout to Pokémon the movie secrets of the jungle where the main villain commits an on screen double homicide against koko’s parents For the first time in the franchise A scene no one talks about for some reason
I didn’t know Pokémon had a manga series and that it’s a dark manga series!! Hello more hyper fixation and fandom! I can’t believe I’ve been a Pokémon fan since I was maybe 6-7(?) and never knew! I’m the worst! Thank you very much for introducing me to this wonderful new series
oh no that sounds bad. i hope he has changed his mind since and found more videos explaining the whole thing to him! and yesss! i love the cards too! looking at the art is super cool. if you don’t know what to do with them, you could put them in binders to build a collection or use frames to display your favorite ones. i got a large frame for 25 cards as an early birthday gift and i love it haha those frames can be a bit pricey but they do come in all sizes and you can find them on etsy! there’s also small magnetic display cases for your desk etc. if you want more inspiration i highly recommend watching pokemon card collectors on youtube like pokerev! some of them have discords with loads of inspiration and people sharing their collections! i hope that helps! also, you can try trading with people if you have duplicates/cards you don’t like. tons of card shops allow selling/trading cards in!
The thing about lance blowing up the city is that there weren’t many people in the city at the time because of the surfing event. He says maybe one or two, but that’s still fucked up regardless lol. Great video!😊
one thing i hate about the pokemon anime is how it creates assumptions about how the rest of the franchise's world works, even when the games and even later in the anime, it is directly contridicted. CASE IN POINT: Charmander's tail. The anime initially claims that it dies if its tail flame goes out. However, modern dex entries for the evolution line states the EXACT OPPOSITE. Its flame CAN'T go out until it dies. The tail is a measure of its life force, not the source. in some places its even stated that that flame won't ever go out, even when completely underwater
Latias did not have babies, those are other Latios and Latias. Nice vid, was cool to learn some behind the scenes stuff I didn't know. Pretty glad Takeshi stopped writing the anime lol
@@plushiepath omg you responded!!! Tysm!! I'm at the end of the manga chapter and I'm very pleased with how thorough this was. I was afraid you'd leave put certain bits, but they were there! Thank youuu
The Japanese content was edited from South Korean broadcasts because Korea didn't allow content from Japan until around 2004. It didn't allow Japanese films or music to be sold or shown either. Pokemon may have aired but the Japanese material was edited out to not offend viewers. Japan was colonizing South Korea until 1945.
While this was an enjoyable watch, I’m not the biggest fan of the presented notion at the end of the video. Pokémon games aren’t meant for its oldest fans-they’re meant for kids. Older fans can enjoy them ofc but the idea that Pokémon should cater to adults has always left a bad taste in my mouth. The series isn’t really getting worse, people are just growing up. And that’s okay!
thank you! and yeah i get both sides. i think the games should definitely be accessible and suitable for kids. i like the mystery elements and i’d like to see more optional plot (doesn’t have to be super mature or dark but i’d love for them to hone in on the rpg aspects of the game) i think that later games are a bit too simplified for children. like they added more mechanics but the new gym tests are kinda ehh and i think the games could be more challenging and still amazing for kids. but you’re completely right - it’s ok that they focus on their core audience!
TLDR: Pokemon games nowadays actually are worse since making lower quality titles without as much effort put in is cheaper, quicker and the games sell regardless, it has nothing to do with having a primarily child audience, that's just a bad faith excuse for their current business model. While I totally agree that they should care to make the games readily accessible to children, since they indeed do make up most of their audience, that's hardly an excuse to ship games with tons of graphical and performance issues since even kids tend to notice those. Especially since they're published by nintendo, a company whose cattalogue is pretty much all made up of properties that are marketed towards children and still, main games for series like Mario or Zelda or Animal Crossing clearly show the love that went into their making. They're not nearly as buggy and they actually see some innovations to their respective formulas. It's pretty clear that the lack of care put in the more recent games isn't due to a decision to make it more accessible to children, but more so to just mass produce them and sell as much as possible and the sad truth is they do indeed sell regardless of quality since nobody really holds them accountable for it. I am obviously not blaming you for it and I myself havent done anything than I guess not buying any pokemon game in quite a while, but it just really bothers me to see people defending their disregard for their own franchise on the basis of being made for children, when they clearly couldn't care less as long as it keeps making money.
I was actually kinda surprised that during the manga section you mentioned Reburst along with the original manga, but didn't mention Magical Journey? I only know of it as I have 2 volumes (1 & 3) in spanish, but it certainly fits into the category of weird media they did early on as the manga is technically pokemon because we do see them... but they aren't at all the central focus like you'd expect The manga is a shojo slice of life revolving around this girl named Hazel that ends up tasked with catching pokemon as a requirement for her grandpa to make her a love potion for the guy she likes Anyways, this was a great vid, cheers!
@@plushiepath i haven’t played too many pkmn games (maybe like 6 total??) so take this w a grain of salt but… honestly the best story i’ve ever seen from a pkmn game!! and while i wish the game had more than just the 400 pkmn i do adore the ones they chose!! honestly my biggest problems w it is just 1. no changing outfits 2. breeding is much harder and 3. the glitches 😅
