Hey YNABers! A few of you graciously pointed out a correction to this video at 7:10-monthly totals showing red on the Income v Expense report are NOT months where you overspent the budget, but rather are months where you spent more than you brought in. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as buying that car you've been saving up for forever or finally cashing out on the $5,000 vacation you've been diligently budgeting for for your family, and is not an indicator of overspending. Thank you always for a being a friendly community that continually seeks to help others and make YNAB better! We appreciate you! 🥰 🌻 Hannah

A big ouch for me was when I sent a lot of $$ at one time to contribute to our Roth IRA's. My goal for the rest of the year was to not see a big red number like that again! (Even though I know I didn't REALLY spend it as it is in a tracking account now, but I did spend it out of my budget....Ugh.

The area where YNAB has the most room for improvement. Amazing reports would sell the app, get on it YNAB.

It would be sweet to be able to save some queries in the reports (selected categories, date ranges, etc.) and have them as quick links or views, instead of having to rebuild a specific report query each time.

For real. It's a great app, but honestly for a service that costs as much as it does you would expect much more robust options. There are tons of free programs available that offer many more options. My only real gripe with the service. If I didn't budget on desktop and use toolkit I'd be very frustrated - the balance over time & income breakdown reports are invaluable at helping me visualize our financial progress over the last 10+ months of using YNAB. Hope they stop relying on Toolkit and implement some of their own solutions, they've talked about reports for years.

For Net Worth report, the example needs to include the value of the house….that would show the persons net worth. Unless a person is upside down on their house payments, each person that owns a house should have a positive net worth. The more equity a person has in their house, the higher their net worth.

One minor nitpick on what Hannah says at 7:10. A monthly net income in red doesn't mean you spent over budget. It means you spent more than you earned in that month. You could have previously budgeted for a $5,000 vacation, then in another particular month spent that planned $5,000 on your vacation, while only earning $4,000 as your usual income. That right there would give you $1,000 in the red even though you planned and budgeted for that vacation.

@judymccarver5833

Reports are exactly how we know how much money to fund in each category each month throughout the year in order to be assured every month the category has enough to cover spending. Ie. December: Total spent in a category divided by 12 = how much $ each month to drop in the category. This also gives me a wake up call where I’m way overspending or underspending upon doing an honest analysis!

What happens to reports when you do a fresh start? Will it still remember the previous activity from the old budget?
@butterflykirstie
@butterflykirstie Год назад
No, it will not remember. Reports will completely reset if you do a fresh start
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial Год назад
A fresh start will maintain the structure of the budget (category groups, categories, targets, bank account totals), but it will wipe all history of spending and money assignment. So a fresh start *will* wipe your reports clean on the new budget! However, when you perform a fresh start, your old budget is archived and you can still access it whenever, so you can still access those reports via the old budget! 🌻 Hannah

7:10 Does red mean over-budget or simply expenses were more than income for that month? For example, if I reached a goal that month and bought a car with cash, that specific month would be in the red, but still within budget. (unless I'm not understanding something, totally possible)
@butterflykirstie
@butterflykirstie Год назад
The latter, it’s just a calculation of money in vs money out that month. If you have a large expense you’ve been saving for, that month will most likely always be in the red
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial Год назад
Yes, Kirsten's right! I mispoke! The red just means more was spent than was brought in, which is *not* an indicator of going over budget (thanks to savings and true expenses!). Thanks for catching that! 🌻 Hannah

I rarely use the reports because they are not very useful. If I have to sort and then use a calculator to find out how much I spend per Payee, it does me no good. Might has well be using a spreadsheet.
@LeahBBeavers

So I don't really remember this being mentioned anywhere, so I am not sure if I did something wrong. I am one of those that was keeping money in a 'next month' category in my 'get ahead a month' journey instead of assigning to the next month straight away. I am gathering that because I didn't move money to 'ready to assign' first that it did not see it as income? I have been with YNAB for about 4 full months now and my income vs expense report is all out of wack with almost no income. Is there a way to fix this??
@YNABofficial
@YNABofficial 3 месяца назад
Hi Leah! I have a guess at what might be going on. When you get a paycheck, are you initially assigning that money to your "Ready to Assign" category and then assigning it to your "Month Ahead" category? Or are you assigning it directly into the "Month Ahead" category? You'll want to do the former, not the latter! This is because any inflow of money that flows into Ready to Assign before being distributed will be considered income. Any inflow of money that's categorized directly to a category without going through Ready to Assign first is just considered "activity". If you've been categorizing paychecks directly into your "Month Ahead" category with off the bat, YNAB won't be identifying it as income. Let me know if this helped! If this doesn't seem to be the problem, you can also write into our customer support and they can help you figure out what might be happening! 🌻 Hannah

I love ynab but the reports is where it all falls apart for me. I have submitted feature suggestions but crickets. The budgets are all about spending. There is no report about budgeting. The entire concept of ynab is to embrace true expenses. So it doesnt matter if I spend more than I make in a month because I might have been saving for that item for the last 10 years. The reporting should be based on what you budget OR what you spend (selectable). I want to see what I earn every month and how much I budget. To ensure I am budgeting less than I earn so I can begin to age my money and apply to future months. Right now if I have a big expense for 10k it throws my budget off. But what if I knew I needed that expense and the money was allocated. That is not really a “red” situation as these reports will show you. I REALLY wish they would spend some time in reporting in ynab to get it right. Other than Net Worth in my opinion it is all pretty useless.
