DCA- I"ve been watching you for years and always appreciated your presentations. However, just today, while watching a bunch of Blade Show videos it hit me what sets you head and shoulders above the rest of the guys - your professionalism, intelligence, good humor and gentle nature. Thank you.
You have no idea how badly I wanted to talk to Eric in person about the rex121 sage release. I'm so jealous of anyone that got to chat with him this weekend!
I have a ton of Spyderco knives that I’ve purchased and used over many years, going back to my days in the Marine Corps in the late 1990s. I bought my first Spyderco at the PX. It was a Endura in VG-10 with the old style plastic clip. I carried that thing in the field for years. Sadly, I was so disappointed in Spyderco, when I found out they are radically jacking their prices up AND simultaneously reducing their military discount. I’m just disgusted. This is a move that I think Sal would never have made.
Im still more upset at the cost of filling my grocery cart than the price of a knife. Everything is more expensive these days. Sad but true. Fortunately a new knife can wait, food can’t.
@@EDCandLace Like I said, I love my Spyderco knives. But, I don’t know if I would agree with you on that. At least not any more. Manufactures in Japan, Taiwan, China, and Italy are all producing incredible knives in premium materials with superior fit and finish. My K390 stretch and my SPY27 Para 3 LW are still probably among my most carried knives, but my 20cv Kizer October and Elmax Kizer Towser K are definitely giving them a run for their money. You also can’t beat a Cold Steel American Lawman for an all-around beater/user knife, and that is in s35vn for about $100 with probably the best heat treat in the game. If your a USA-made only guy, Kershaw is absolutely killing it. I still carry my 20cv Kershaw Dividend daily when I’m at work.
I would have picked up that cruwear temperance if it weren't FRN. I would have preferred that they upped the price a bit and went with micarta or g10. I dont mind frn for my spyderco folders but not on a fixed blade geared towards self defense. Even a durable rubberized demko material would have been more appropriate.
Don't get me wrong, I love the steel refreshes and colors and such, the small things like bushings/bearing adjustments and perfecting their good line up...but I want new stuff from spyderco, seems like they're afraid of losing. Just innovate, yall got the room for error guys.
I certainly do not want or expect a Civvi-type release schedule, but if you're NOT the type of collector who wants multiple examples of the same design, Spyderco doesn't give much to you these days
I love Spyderco knives, but they have become boring I'm sorry to say. Not enough innovation, like you said. And just throwing a new steel into an existing version, such as the recent obsession with m4....meh. you guys don't seem to realize that not everyone lives in a desert climate. Also, there really isn't enough magna cut steel. Everything else is just a compromise.
Like the DLC Cruwear yojimbo? Or the new purple PD1 DLC, lol I want a salt LC200N YoJumbo, with caribbean style LC200N liners, and a serrated combo spyder edge
I would love that tenacious if it was in better steel. For the price it's hard to spend for 8cr. Ip be happy if it was vg10 or there bd1n but 8cr is just not good enough for the price
Agreed, 8cr and titanium just doesn’t make sense. Totally opposite of most of their line where the steel is premium and the handle is made of less expensive material. I’d rather see a cruwear and frn tenacious.
I bought a Tenacious LW in s35vn on sale for 80 bucks last year ...I slapped some Flytanium ti scales on it that I got for 40.00. It's a banger of a knife for the combined prices. But I agree with your assessment of this new Tenacious offering. Cheers.
I tend to agree with that statement on the surface, however, the surface doesn't always show what the "whole" of the knife represents. I've had 2 Tenacious' over the last 4-5 years, both 8Cr13, and bought specifically for chopping up cardboard which ends up being about 150 feet per week. Their 8Cr13 is just a league ahead of all other 8Cr13 in the industry and as crazy as it is to say, the heat treatment they do on those 8Cr13 budget models literally out performs about 80% of my Chinese OEM M390 and actually perform similar/on par with Benchmades S30V. As much as Benchmade has kind of lost touch with a majority of the community, their S30V has always performed stellar for the most part, so comparing the 8Cr13 to this was absolutely intended as a compliment. But as much as I respect what they have been able to do with a steel that has such a negative stigma overall, I do wish they would just upgrade it to something more desirable; it's a fantastic model and it deserves a new makeover.
Just listening to Mr.Spyderco is exciting with all the updates on their knives. Yeah, they all may look similar but the designs is specific & functional. Para 3 is dad's grail. Cheers from Australia.
I just can't see paying over £200 for a knife with a plastic handle. Shame, because I used to love Spyderco. I miss the days when you could get a Sage in Titanium for much less than £200. But that Techno 3 is calling my name.
@@just9911 I have a Manix 2 lightweight that I use as a workhorse and the frn handle works perfectly. Strong and lightweight with a great grip. I paid 82 for it but I think it now goes for over 100. Still worth it imho but I’m a huge fan of spyderco. I think they are the best folders hands down
Damnit. I was already preparing myself for the Rex 121 Sage 5 and PD1 Endela. Now there is a Magnacut Salt Sage 5??? I may as well send my paychecks directly to spyderco. Damnit
Great review; can you tell me when the Sage Salt will be available for pre-order ? Also Eric mention anything about a Salt version of Chaparral? Because that would be 🔥
Love that Techno3. Bought the original one when it came out, now years later I cant get Techno3 (with all of its 2.5" of blade) shipped to NYC. Love the steel on original, Marcin Słysz is on point with his work, Spyderco and Taichung machining, just great. #knifelaws 😢
I really felt it when Eric Glesser said that Buck has been doing the 110 for "60 fuckin' years". I laughed. you can tell that Eric and likely the rest of the industry respects the hell out of Buck for continuously producing that knife for as long as they have.
Spy27 has proven impressively corrosion resistant for me too. MagnaCut is tough competition, but I think it’s these two steels that are the most balanced out there.
Spyderco is just not gonna be that type of company. If you're seeking something new every other week look no further then WE/ sencut or vosteed aka the late follower.
Spyderco has a huge lineup already. We don’t need them to drop as many as WE or Artisan because what they have works. Pretty sure they aren’t discontinuing as many models as a lot of other companies either.
We need to see the REX121 in other knives, please! I would totally jump all over a Para3 linered version. I need a fancy new blade to dress up with the 2024 Blade Show scales I just bought from LymchNW!
I like it all but the tenacious was originally shown with titanium and D2 a while ago and the production one we get 8cr….. I was like why D2? And they do something worse. Gross. Still love spydercos and will continue to guy them
Sage series is the best spyderco especially the the action on 5. Add bushing on sage 1.just can't justify that price for maxamet and rex121.. hope magnacut is decent price.
Can someone get Eric a Buck 110 or 112 so he can see what it looks like when a knife is actually sharpened all the way back to the guard. Every interview he gives he talks about their knives being sharpened all the way back, and I love spyderco knives and I have a lot of them but I have yet to see one that actually was. Buck does it very well. Just drives me crazy when he goes on and on about it. It’s a pretty common topic of conversation whether you prefer to add a sharpening choil or just finish sharpening it…..
It’s both refreshing and exciting to see a “top-of-the-line” model being made NOT in Taiwan. Italy is an excellent choice, as would be Japan and USA. Nothing against the knives made in Taichung, I just don’t think that should be their flagship factory.
@@larshoneytoast722 it could be expensive in suppperrr large volumes but I l agree it wouldn’t even be that bad. And it’s not like we necessarily need fancy designs. Like I’d be happy with just nicer screws. Example of nicer screws that are a bit more expensive that I’m talking about and enjoy a lot are screws on jack wolf knifes and Peña x knifes. They are machined and beautiful. Almost like the screws them self are art.
Eric is ONLY one of these reps that i 100% believe his inthusiasim!!! I really live this knife .. this knife is my fav.... this knife is beatiful because... They all stole their lies from eric but when he said it was orginal lol His life... his blood is in spyderco!!! Spyderco is the ORGINAL knife guys brand!!! Still... benchmade reeves cold steel... none of them offer the wide variety of designs materials price point quality of craftsmanship heat treat warranty(not needed) and DESIGN awesomenss as spyderco. And they re not my fav!!!
Stay away from all the steel charts and try the steel. Cruwear is not only super tough with a super fine grain structure, but for some reason it just holds that hair shaving razors edge for a long time. Once it starts to dull it goes pretty fast, you done get a long working edge like s90v or something. But I love getting my knives razor sharp, and then I love when they stay sharp as I use them. a hard treated cruwear is your friend if you too like razor sharp things
@@georgespicer907 steel charts are good if you find the right ones. the only ones i use are from knife steel nerds since larrin is a literal metallurgist and uses objective equal methods to compare them, and heat treats them and grinds them himself for testing. but most knife dealers charts aren’t good.
@acid6urns I was given a Para 2 for father's day and it is too chippy on the edge. I prefer s30v, my standard para2. If it chips out, the chips are much smaller and don't go the full width of the sharpened edge. That's my experience with it from spyderco. I have a good size collection and I find it the most over hyped steel. Love 20cv, s30v, ctsxhp, m390, and I kinda like s90v. Fixed blades, I like simple steels all high carbon.
I love my Spydercos, but they seem to be falling behind very quickly. The light weight versions are just so cheap feeling...they end up in my tackle box or glove box as "just in case" knives. If you're going to release the same things over and over, how about an auto Shaman or PM2? The Reveal 15 is different for Spyderco, but there are 50 others just like it on the market with better steels from a dozen companies. Some of those price increases over the past 5 years should have gone to R&D. I'm hopeful y'all will catch back up, but we need something new & useful & under $250, or else Spyderco might just become the next Buck...everybody has one, but just because grandpa bought it for them.
