The Benko Gambit is one of the most aggressive ways to play the Benoni, one of the most popular, most interesting, most offensive, and, at the same time, riskiest defenses black could choose to play against d4. For an introduction to the Benoni, watch this video on the basics: • Introduction to the Be...
The Benko Gambit, also known as the Volga Gambit, is an opening that branches out of the Benoni Defense, in which black quickly gives up his b5 pawn, thus trying to weaken white’s central control and develop the initiative very early on in the game.
The opening was named after Pal Benko, one of its biggest exponents. It has been played by some of the best tacticians in the history of the game - Kasparov, Tal, Topalov, Shirov, Ivanchuk, and many others.
In compensation for the pawn, black gets active play on the queenside, especially on the semi-open a file. He also gets an easier game generally, with the initiative being in his favor, since white had to take time to capture the pawn.
White has an extra pawn, first of all. Furthermore, since he now has more queenside pawns, he has a chance of creating a passer on the a file. He also gets to play for the center, with e4 and e5, and an easier attack on black’s king since the black pieces will usually be on the queenside.
That means that it’s an interesting opening with both sides having something to play for.
White can choose to accept or decline the gambit, which is the main branching in the Benko. I have covered all the main variations in both options. You can find the video timings for each below.

@hangingpawns is funny to hear you talk about the b6 pawn return variation because I also used to play the Benko, and I was so annoyed by the b6 move, that I switched to the modern Benoni. basically same as what you did

 @Hanging Pawns At 19:04 you recommend castling, but that is a mistake. The queen will come to e4, pinning the undefended knight to the undefended rook - losing material. I think a normal move here is Na3 instead, defending the rook with our queen and defending the pawn. The game is still complicated here though. Any recommendations on what to play?

The position at @19:02 in the Nf3 gambit declined line contains a fatal error for black. Castling before developing the queenside knight is completely winning for white after Qe4. Black's knight on d5 cannot be defended after Qe4, but retreating to b6 or f6 loses a defender of the bishop on e7. White will continue Qxe7 Qxe7 Rxe7, and be comfortably up a piece with queens traded, +3.5. Instead, after Re1, the engine suggests Na6 with plans to move again to c7 to reinforce the d5 knight after Qe4/Qf5. This is a great example of move order mistakes that can result in huge tactical opportunities for the opposing side in the Benko.

Yeah, I was just commenting the same thing. Castling there was clearly a blunder by black, as QE4 double attacks the bishop on E7 and the knight on D5.

You're absolutely right! I juzz luuv watching the top dogs playing the best of the best with a novelty in move 27 ... but more deadly players like us may not encounter "heavy theory" in our clubs or against 1200 to 2200 players. We simply don't face the "best moves" in a given opening or variation: We need to know what to DO against weaker moves! This channel is apparently/seemingly/in my opinion THE most thorough out there in that regard!

Great overview! I've been studying and playing the Benko - I do prefer the ...g6 continuation in the fully accepted line, though I played ...Bxa6 back in the old days. 12.a4 in that king walk version is very tough for Black to face. Perunovic's book is a must-read for anyone playing the ...g6 line of the fully accepted. And I'm with you on facing the pawn return variation with ...e6. And one more tidbit, 8.Bc4 in the Zaitsev line has one of the coolest opening names - the Nescafe Frappe attack :)
@satwik1268
@satwik1268 Год назад
right! kingwalk variation is definitely easier for white to play, g6 is pretty good and e6 immediately instead of g6, I also feel is good even though you don't get the monster fianchetto bishop with e6

The b6 pawn return variant is my preferred way to meet this gambit when playing white. As you pointed out, black gains several pluses when white accepts the extra pawn and i prefer to make black work for everything rather than white surrendering them to black at the start. But good luck with your future play with this! Should be some interesting games to come.

Hello, you do good work on your videos. In this one you mention a few books. I have not played in a long time (preparing to jump back in on lichess but a lot of rust to shake off) but when I was a club player I found John Fedorowicz' book "Complete Benko Gambit" very helpful. It was published way back in 1990 (there is however a second edition from 1995 that I have never seen) so it may not have all the latest and greatest games and evaluations. But where it excels in my opinion (worth not even 2 cents) is in explaining the ideas and plans for both sides, something you are also very good at in your videos. Particularly Fedorowicz talks a lot about the pawn structure and objectives of the minor pieces especially the knights from what I remember. You are probably well past needing something like that but as a 1600's - 1800's club player 30 years ago it was huge help for me. Best Rgds and know I'm enjoying your videos a lot. Thanks.

I've been facing this lately and have found if very aggravating: 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5, 3 d5 b5, 4 Nd2 g6, 5 cxb5 a6 6 e4 d6, 7 axb5 a6 then this move 8 Qa4. It seems the move 8 ... Bd7 is obvious, but it really ties Black up, nonetheless. There is standoff on b5 square that tends to freeze Black's queenside piece development.

28:07 White has been using the plan of playing on the queenside with 12. a4 and either 13. Qe2 or Qc2 with the idea of Nb5, Ra3, b3, etc. White is scoring over 40% wins vs. just 16% losses in this line.

At 14:14: After declining the gambit, you mention this is superior move (5. You left out the very testing 8.Bd7 in the AxB lines in the Modern after the Queen check. White seems and performs better in all the lines. Oh, I see here you cover it in the last variation. However, white can force a transposition into this line, regardless. The modern variation really seems to suck the fun out of the Benko : ( The ideas with a4 are really hard to meet and black merely suffers for a draw. But, ey, that's a small risk to play a fun gambit 70% of the time.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_x_jp_7Ephc.html Here in the qc2 declined line qe4 wins either knight or dark square bishop, thus black 0-0 move is a huge game losing blunder
