My dad was an autobody man for 50+ years. When a car he repaired at his home shop left it shined like it just left the showroom. He had one long buffer, large fluffy wool pads, a gallon of buffing compound and a jug of Mirror Glaze, that's it.

I do wish you would do (you may have and I haven't searched yet) some videos on single stage paint v. modern/clear coat paint. You've got me back as a regular and i can't wait to see what you posted since i followed you more regularly. Just awesome. Many thanks.

Now I'm more confident with my DA to compound my newly painted bumper sill and not be too aggressive. I did my own body work and rattle can base coat and clear coat. All done outdoors under my carport on my car, which is Platinum Graphite Metallic dark gray. The sill looks great now but I know a light wet sanding and light compound will make it look better. Your video really helps. I did my rear quarter panel last fall and it just does not look glossy. After watching you I now realize I can do a little more easily and make it shine. Thanks for great videos on RU-vid. I'm a subscriber to your channel. Also born near Chicago at Great Lakes Naval hospital. Live in Sealy Texas now. So I have to be careful with weather and wind working outdoors on my car under a carport.

Wool pads are far from obsolete, I've been using them on long throw DA polishers since 2007. A microfibre pad on a large orbit DA can be more aggressive than a wool pad. There are new wools coming from here in Australia soon that are a reduced denier size and will finish LSP ready on lighter colours and a few rich colours. Wool is not just a cutting pad it can be used for lighter duties and is far nicer and more versatile than microfibre.

If I had the option I would go for graphene has it is less slippery, therefore minimising scratches from animals, always found that once I place an hydrophobic protection the cats will slide scratching the paint, no slide no scratches. Excellent job and very good detail.

Great information thank you . Just got to ask . Why do German cars look so good in white . I have 2006/7 Touareg in Black . 144000 miles on the clock . Had it a year before we moved to a house where I could look after it properly . Did a full decon . Also full paint correction too . It might be nearly 15 years old . But it looks stunning when it's clean . Got to say great channel . You advise products but you aren't tied to pushing one brand . Totally unbiased love it .

As a guy who washes/details for a living this is a good video. Still alot for even me to know. When you work for a dealership they unfortunately have systems and a basic go at the know how's of detailing and i see i have missed out on some points. Thinkin of takina detailing course even at this point lol. Wanna go into some business gor myself and i gotta be in the know. Cheers pal and again a good informative video. I know the Maguire's products you shown. Me i go with 3 steps before wax with black cars before a wax finish with miami shine. Takes time. I have even gone 4 steps before wax using the max machine polish that has a sandy feel to it. You gotta go through steps you pass that all over. Pain in the ass lol. Only when extremely necessary but been there.

That was just fantastic--by far the best tutorial on this subject for newbies. I'd be thrilled if you would comment on my own situation. I want to explain it to make things easier for you. But you should feel free to skim. My car, where I will be using a new cordless DeWalt 5" DA polisher, is a Mazda 3 (Soul Red Metallic). I gather that it has soft paint. The car has been kept outside for 2 years, but I've kept it clean with a weekly tunnel car wash and have clayed it about every 6 months. I've topped it with an ok sealant. Spray wax has been applied at the car wash. I barely noticed any swirls until channels like yours taught me to see them. Curses! These swirls seem pretty light. I was thinking of using Sonax Perfect Finish with a yellow sponge just to see if that would complete the correction. If my test panel result was no, I'd use a microfiber pad with Sonax Cut Max compound. Then I'd polish with Perfect Finish. If you have the time and inclination to comment I would be very grateful.

Hey thanks for the kind words. Sounds like you have a good game plan for the correction on your Mazda. If you're not getting the correct you would like just work in smaller sections with a slower arm speed.

@@ChicagoAutoPros Thanks so much for your help. I was procrastinating actually doing the polishing ... and then I saw this video. It allowed me to avoid the worst outcomes (e.g. scorching paint on creases and overheating non-metal panels). Now I can just go slow without fear. The idea of slowing down arm speed would never have occurred to me. Thanks again.

What do you think about using distilled water to cool down the panel during the polishing process? I've been doing it for years and two of my local detailers are doing it too. I know that the compound is a little diluted, but it gives you a cooler surface to work with.

Jason, You mentioned that different manufacturers have different hardness of paint and clear coats, so do you have a list or guide for hard to soft paint/clear coat? I just inherited a 1997 Ford that is in great shape and it would be great to know whether the clear coat is soft or hard. A link to something you have or someone else's list would be great. Thanks for explaining the process so well!!

How do you get severe water spots out of black paint? Its an 08 Ford Ranger. A clay bar with an iron remover spray helped but they are still there. The truck was in Seoul South Korea for 5 years but my partner said they started here in Washington state. I only mention South Korea because of the pollution that could have contributed to the severity of the spotting.

Paint thickness gauge the inside door panel and subtract the difference... and now you know roughly how much clear is left
