Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

Space babies should never have been put first, it pretty much punched a load of people in the face and guaranteed they would not carry on watching.

If Tharries' theory is correct and we're watching some sort of Truman Show thing in which the Doctor is captured and manipulated (I favour the "miniscope from Carnival of Monsters" theory I've made up, which would explain why they're manipulated as well as captured) then the 'babies and the bogeyman' story might make sense as a scenario into which the Doctor has been inserted. The problem is that they used it to kick off a new season, also that if the theories are right they won't count for much because the casual viewer will have switched off. And missed "Boom" which would be a shame.

I don't get why they would start the series with an episode that's so weak, even in premise. 'Space Babies' was never going to get a lot of interest, especially when it's supposed to be the grand start to a new era
@joelmole3157

Apparently the original plan was to have Space Babies air immediately after The Church on Ruby Road, making the latter the opener. But RTD wanted to give the VFX team time to finish it so it was pushed to May. It's also telling than on Disney+, they listed The Church on Ruby Road as episode 1 (according to Crispy Pro). It does make sense because in series 1, Rose was the normal opener and then it jumped straight into silliness with The End of the World. I suspect RTD wanted to repeat that process here but the scheduling went wrong.

I think it’s more to do with having the season start so long after Christmas, had space babies aired a week after New Years say, then I think the viewership would have been better. Massive misstep to air in May.

I did think the launch was late really. Should've been easter. I get the double billing ahead of Eurovision but not sure it did them any favours. So here's the ACTUAL truth. You're never going to get Tennant-era numbers again. They were a fluke when the show was basically a glorified soap opera, in a time and period when interest in soap operas and TV shows were at their peak, and before the dominance of streaming services. It's been 15 years since Tennant left, and that's a LONG time in terms of viewing habits these days. There's thousand of easily accessible channels, streaming services are now fully mainstream, fewer and fewer people are watching TV period, live service video games are now more common than ever, and anime's practically mainstream. There's so much more competition for people's attention these days, and it isn't some sort of malevolent "The Doctor's Black so I hate him" (unlike what CERTAIN anti-fandom types would have you believe) sentiment, but simply because people change and move on as time passes.

@Scarlett90 and to further your argument and back up what youre saying, the week before that, only 4 shows broke the 5m barrier, 2 of which were event TV. This shows that there aren't that many programmes which pull in massive TV viewers anymore, even after 7 days. TV audiences across the board are declining. From that week to last week, Britain's Got Talent lost 1.1m viewers, and Race Across the World lost half a million viewers. Are these programmes also failures? The press doesn't seen to be saying that! All the people saying that Disney Plus haven't been saying how big the figures have been means it's a failure...it was publicised at the time of the 60th Anniversary Specials and the Christmas Special how successful they'd been! Richard Osman and Marina Hyde’s podcast The Rest Is Entertainment talked about the opening episodes. They gave a good explanation of the new funding model, predicted the episodes would end up at 4m consolidated mark and said the BBC would be ‘very happy’ with that. They are very in the know in terms of entertainment and the BBC specifically so I think they have the authoritative take. Ultimately very hard to compare it to things like BGT and Coronation Street that are best enjoyed at/shortly after broadcast and aren’t available on other platforms. That being said I do think Space Babies was disastrous as an opener, practically everyone I know tuning back in after dropping show during Chibnal areas have dropped it again after seeing the episode. Those who stuck with both opening episode even more put off by Devils Chord (in isolation not as bad but with space babies seemed to be making a bold statement not to take the show seriously anymore, odd as the following two episodes do seem very serious!)

Yeah this is pretty bad, I won't lie (just to clarify, I want Doctor Who to succeed, I'm not one of those anti-woke morons and I'm okay with this new series so far). Even the rankings are pretty poor, especially compared to the 60th and The Church on Ruby Road. I think the May release did harm it. The viewing figures for series 10 for instance were shockingly poor because they were released in April/May time. I heard RTD intended to release it in Winter to keep the momentum going but had to delay it to give the VFX time to work on it (a very commendable act, may I add). I also think the midnight release hurt it too since a lot of people I know (not just online) got very confused and angry about it and I think I'm the only one in my circle who did watch it at midnight. I do agree that it's not about wokeness. I think people need to go outside and actually ask people what they thought of it, rather than their online buddies. Maybe they should touch some grass and talk to real women while they're at it. I'm very curious to see how the Disney+ numbers did because of how much they're riding on their involvement but they're notorious for keeping their viewing figures hidden.

Not terrible is a bit of an understatement to be fair. I like your optimism, but this is shockingly bad. Yeah, season 2/15 will happen, but him writing Season 3 means absolutely nothing. There is every possibility if it does badly that the show will end. I'm not saying it will at all, but you cannot say what you said at the beginning (the shows not going to end) with any more certainty. So they don't axe it straight away, but Disney don't come back after next year would mean less budget and even less episodes and series. You say how the general public don't know what wokeness is, no they don't I agree. But they go along with what the Daily Mail tells them and places like that hate this show now.

They said they thought it felt like the show was deliberately aiming itself at young kids rather than a family. And….I can’t say I entirely disagree. Wishful thinking Tharries. The combined audience of c4 million represents the second and third worse ever (only Jodies's legend of the Sea Devils has been lower and I wouldn't be surprised if Boom is close to that). The US audience at its peak was about 2 million (50 % on BBC America) and disappeared after Matt Smith left. It has shown no sign of coming back since. All of the available data shows that Disney+'s attempts at capturing the non-fan modern audience has failed. The fan audience has been driven away, even if you choose to decree that the old fans aren't fans at all really. Since I doubt the schedulers have chosen the weakest episodes to launch this series, then the only question is how low can it drop. Yes there will be a series 2, but as this was written and shot before broadcast, there can be no course correction, which means the audience is unlikely to grow. Will there be a season 3 ? They may decide to carry one as per per STD, but it will be irrelevant as hardly anyone will watch. The BBC doesnt have the funds anyway (major cuts are being enacted for them to afford the UK and US elections), which implies it is up to Disney.

I think quality is a big factor. The Christmas special made me very cautious and when the early reviews started coming in for space babies (positive though they were) they had all the alarm bells for RTD troupes that I find grating so I skipped over and waited for Boom so I'd get a positive impression of Ncuti. Personally I'll be watching next week as the early reviews don't have any of the same warning signs, and I'm going back to earlier episodes now. Maybe *some* people will be doing the same. Woke is an interesting word in that even the people who use it don't seem to know what it means, it's just depending on you "progressive things I like" and "progressive things I don't like". I don't think in itself it does any harm - but the press releases *focusing* on it probably did do some harm. Honestly classic who was plenty "woke", you'd just never in a million years get the people promoting the show focusing on that fact.

Thing is that if Ncuti isn’t a success (and I really hope this changes) then they have a problem in that he’s already recording/recorded next year’s episodes, unless they do a second season this year and regenerate him quickly. Well I am just curious how will everything play out now. These numbers will probably rise. After 28 days they might get to 5 milion. Which would still be a little bit disappointing. I think there might be two reasons for the drop. First - all the focus on the streaming nonsense. People just thought that they can catch it whenever they want to - even after six months. I certainly don't wait with my finger on the refresh button if something streams. I just watch it whenever I want to. Even year after the release. But I think there is better and more brutal truth out there - people just don't care anymore for the show. At least not as many as they did before. So now the question is if it's enough for BBC and Disney. I definitely think Russell and the Bad Wold producers have discussions what's next because they probably didn't expect this. And if it would be a great success on Disney plus they would boast about it by now. So Doctor might be doing ok there but not excellent. Which is sad because I like the show but I think the second series would be its last - maybe BBC orders some big special to wrap up the story and then it's over.

Doctor Who has always been "Woke" I think we all get that. But this new era has been to another level. Personally I agree with most of Russel's politics and even for me it's been abit too much, it's as if it's being made exclusively for people on the very very far left, and I think that turned alot of people away. I also think it's been quite CBBC, again it's always been a family show but there have been moments in the Christmas special and Ncuti's first two episodes that make me question as an adult, why am I even watching this, it's not being geared for me. And then you have the midnight drops, the time of year all that. Scariest thing about this is unless your show is a brand new IP and it gets good reviews and word of mouth, new series of established shows usually start out as strong as they are going to be. I absolutely loved BOOM and WBY and if we can get more episodes like that I genuinely do think it will pick back up. In Russell's first era he also included his politics but he did it SO much more subtly, this time around it feels like pushing his agenda is more important than the quality of his scripts. Again wanna clarify I actually agree with Russel's politics, but don't be so on the nose with it, you know? Turns even people who agree with you away, never mind those who don't.

As others have said as well 4 million is now a okay viewing figure and even the big hitters and soaps no longer pull in the 10 million figures or long ago. I do enjoy the excitement of a midnight launch and at least for now it's a bit of a novelty but at the same time the past two Saturday nights I've thought "I should be watching Doctor Who on BBC-1 now" and instead spent time scrolling through RU-vid and Disney+ looking for something to watch. Athough the new DW is not to my tastes I do have sincere sympathies for loyal viewers. I do think however we shouldn't pretend the writing is not also part of the issue - I am talking style and narrative not the continual debate on woke issues . Space Babies was possibly just a far too whacky for most and that led a decline. First epiosdes are so important. As Boom was let down in the ratings and from what I gather was yet another very well written classic by Moffat. But RTD's prior episodes obviously took their toll. I think the tone to fantasy over sci-fi is possibly something to be wary of. When I think about Genisis of the Daleks, Blink and all the usual greats very few of them were fantasy based. It is important to give the viewers what they want and not for writers and directors to make assumptions for the masses without foundation.

Viewers do come and numbers can still be good. In the UK there are plenty of long standing detective dramas (Vera, Death In Paradise etc) and magazine shows (Countryfile, Antiques Roadshow) that regularly pull in numbers greater than 5 million, and despite their bland simplicity, the views actually have grown. And Death In Paradise, has plenty of black people in it, so I agree, it can't be the reason why viewers turn off. This week Clarksons Farm is got 3times more viewers on streaming than DW, enough to eclipse the combined viewers of a BBC flagship production. All these shows reward viewers for their loyalty and never take them for granted. DW has a rich history of IP that should be able to drawn in so many more numbers than it does. But by actively dismissing so much of it, the producers and creators have been left wanting.

Some of those will be seen in the +28 ratings, some will be in the +6 month ratings (which the BBC will see). But, as I long feared, Doctor Who is getting too old to attract new viewers as it did in the past. We saw that as long ago as Capaldi’s last series. It’s ‘that show my parents/grandparents watched’. I suspect that globally and with the British fans the way it’s going Doctor Who is finished when Ncuti Gatwa leaves, whether that’s two or three seasons. If the BBC made a Spin-off of the First Doctor of quality, this could be a winner with the fans and audiences of good sci-fi dramas. I have looked objectively and dispassionately at the ratings and the only conclusion I can draw is that...they're pretty poor. This was a HUGE launch. It had Disney backing and tonnes of money. The cast was on every chat show and POD cast and (most bizarrely) Russell T Davis seemed to be popping up on every tv show going at one point (his ego is off the bloody chart). But none of the publicity or extra cash converted into improved ratings. They have actually decreased since Jodie departed. People have turned off. The media has picked up on the "woke messaging" inserted by Davis' (it is is there for sure), but I think the show has reached an inevitable point: audiences have moved on. They don't care. It's not a show for them, it's a show for the fans: but there aren't enough of them to keep the show alive forever. And maybe that's the thing: nothing lasts forever. All tv shows (apart from soap operas) have a natural life-span, especially sci-fi / genre ones. Maybe we just need to realise that Doctor Who is no different (in that regard) to X-Files, Star Trek, Supernatural, Buffy amongst countless others. Maybe it's time to accept Doctor Who isn't forever.

I work in the entertainment industry. Why are Doctor Who fans SO caught up with ratings numbers for a traditional medium that is now no longer relevant? And woke. I'm getting tired of hearing the word and suspect all those complaining don't even watch the show. When a famous band here in my country did something that could be perceived as divisive, their social media sites were bombarded with messages from haters saying they would never listen to or purchase their music again - or buy tickets when said band had spilt up 10 years earlier :). On investigation their social media manager found many came from organised groups, didn't even live in the country, and had never followed them or commented before. The diluted figures are killing the ratings. If Doctor Who was doing well on Disney we probably would have heard about it by now. Some people download the show and others, who were big fans haven’t watched since Capaldi left. There are viewers out there but are wanting the “traditional” 50/50 balance of good and bad episode, like the good old days. It’s a shame that we really haven’t had anything mind blowing with this Doctor yet. Certainly not the Star Wars, Marvel comparisons we were promised. Saying “I’m the Doctor” with about as much gravitas as a wet fart in a jacuzzi didn’t help. Plus “babes” and “honey” feels as out a place as “fam” I’m sure millennial, furries love it “tho”

"Millenial furries" are vocal minority though. Majority of fans are moderates. And they are antagonizing them and making them join "hater" right wing side by injecting so much politics and preaching instead of quality entertainment.

Im sorry im bisexual but theres a distinct overload of queerness for some people, even boom had to slip in a lesbian line, still constructive criticism, this season has, shit acting, some amazing ideas jammed into a 44 minute time frame, this makes for choppy/sloppy editing and sometimes massively incoherent scenes or plot points that are moot or go no where, boom pointless love arc, i think a good fix if they want to keep it at 44 mins is to have 4 two part episodes, get things left on a cliffhanger like they used to, MAKE you want to tune in next week

Doctor Who died with Capaldi. The horror of the Chinballs era was just too much. RTD needs to stop with the obnoxious promos for the show as the episodes were much better. Ncuti needs to shut his big mouth.

I’m sorry Tharries - love your positive energy and I get that your bread and butter is derived from your ‘Who’-themed channel here but seriously, how long can you keep shilling + feigning enthusiasm for this crap? 🤷‍♂️

Well, he has too. Once Doctor Who is dead, his channel will be dead too. He should already prepare for the worst case scenario and start doing some other non Who related Sci Fi content. Just in case.

@inquerion8867 - I disagree somewhat - owing to a two-season deal they’re still going to be producing this Fruity Ncuti sh*t for another year; our dude Tharries here isn’t obliged to consistently afford it gushing and glowing reviews . . . And there’s also like 60 + years of _Who_ content out there to weave commentary videos out of, so . . . 🤷‍♂️

You people are delusional if you think this is ok let alone great viewing figures, perhaps you should come out and touch grass like us.

DS has written an article about the upcoming episode 4/5 stars but DS is a site that rarely says anything bad about Dr Who but they say the ending and the returning characters are really starting to feel stale, RTD was gone a long time while they love the story Very much like Donna in Turn left its let down by basically a predicable ending.

Unfortunately, the direction of the show has taken a downwards spiral for the worst. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more catastrophic, RTD comes in and reasserts the direction Chibnall had bit doubles down. This caused many optimistic fans to go back to not watching it and the show once again lost the mainstream. Viewing figures will never return to the 00s, mid 10s numbers so long as the political stuff is involved and so long as the actors and writers attack the original fans. Right now only a small niche watch it compared to before.

These doctor who haters aren't doctor who fans. I wish they'd shut up and let actual fans watch and enjoy the show. Not every episode is going to be as good as midnight or heaven sent

If every single one of the "haters" boycotted the show, it would barely make a dip. But if half of the normies who used to watch Doctor Who quietly chose to do something else on Doctor Who night, then we get numbers like we see here. And to be clear, normies have a little more tolerance for preachy left-wing stories than the typical hater, but they are tuning out for largely the same reasons.

Good luck keeping the show alive with only "actual fans" (aka left wing viewers). Most people are moderates and they don't like preaching from both far left and far right. They just want some good entertainment.

I can’t say I’m shocked tbh. I maintained in my head that any less than 5M is an L, especially with all this “ground breaking and insane Disney marketing”

There is backlash with the woke agenda, which indicates the programme is forcing agendas. This may or may not be the cause, but it is known a good storyline will get the viewers in, but there is only so often Daleks and the Master can attempt something devious. I would like to see it a little darker in its tone, which was evened out with humour.

How to you justify your comment ? Just because you say the show is doing fine that does not mean it is. The very simple fact is that regardless how you watch the show you still need people to watch it to become profitable and if not enough people are watching then the show will be cancelled at some point in the future. Views = £££ so viewing figures are very, very important for any show to succeed. In 1989 the show stopped due to low viewing figures and if Disney views figures are also poor then they will stop funding, its that simple. It does not matter how much people love the show or that 4m+ have watch it, its all about the large volume of people who are no longer wanting to watch it on any device and the reason why so many are now not watching the show has nothing to do with colour, gender or politics but good entertainment. People are not being entertain by the show any more sadly. Dont get me wrong there will be people who will not watch it for some of reasons I stated above but for the majority it is all about entertainment.

So, I suspect that the figures are down for multiple reasons, and like you Tharries, I don't think that figures are THAT bad. However, a contributing factor I believe is that Church wasn't amazing, and with the song and dance number... I suspect that will have been a suppressing factor. Most people don't really like song and dance numbers in their drama. So Space Babies and Devil's Chord won't have done much to convince people wavering on it that it's really worth their time. On top of that, the weather has been good, and the gap was too big between then and Christmas. I think the midnight drop has made it feel less like an event. I know people who are proper fans who are just waiting until they can be bothered to binge what's out. There's another big factor: I've been watching on Disney with a VPN, and I know other people who have too, because iplayer's 4k is rubbish and too dark and very blue, and Disney's is vibrant and great. I'm sure most people are still watching either traditionally or on iPlayer, but I'm not likely to be one of only 4 people doing it the way I and the three other people I know are doing Important though, DW was at its most popular when it was actually good, but funny with it. Not when it was primarily a light-hearted comedy show with the odd serious episode

I'm no fan of the start of this series, but even I'm shocked at that total. That is worrying. I thought it would in the 6m range not 4m!! He won't be, but RTD should be concerned cause if there is no course correction sharpish he may not get a third series. But then again maybe he and his star should of been more carful what they spout
