Our collector in this episode is not only known for his family’s famous rice dumpling business but he is also one of the most knowledgeable person in Singapore when it comes to Kebayas worn by the Peranakan ladies. In fact, he has an impressive personal collection of Kebayas dating back to over 100 years from 1910. Join us as Raymond tells and shows us the evolution, trends and fashion of the Kebayas over the different decades.

An excellent and informative video. I wish to add the following. Pineapple in the west were a sign of high status and wealth. They were even rented for a high price for dinner parties in 16th and 17th Centuries to less well off people. Folding antique textiles is space saving,however can cause sever damage of the fabric in the creases in the long run. Antique (over 100yo) textiles should always be handled with cotton gloves to prevent the transfer of sweat and oils.

We are glad that you found the episode excellent and informative. Indeed it would have been most proper if we had handled the vintage fabric with more care. Thank you for your reminder and advice. We certainly will let the collector know to exercise more care to preserve the pristine conditions of these vintage kebayas.

Thanks Robert. Thanks for your suggestion. It would be great for private collectors like us would learn from other collectors how to better collect and keep their items. Currently I only keep them in an environment between 23 degrees at all times.
