There is no right or wrong way to collect baseball cards. It doesn't matter if you collect Modern, Vintage, or Pre War Cards...EVERYONE has a slightly different style and philosophy. In this conversation, I discuss each of these topics with my friends @ClementeCollector and @billyballgamesportscards in an hour long conversation. Included in our conversations is being a "narrow" collector vs a "broad" collector, and the pros and cons of each. Also, we cover how to budget and strategize on where our collections are headed. If you haven't already subscribed to their channels, I really hope you'll consider doing so!!

Just a clarification Theo for future reference. I’ve heard you say “rabbit trail” a few times which is not a meaningful analogy. A “rabbit hole” is a metaphor for something that transports someone into a wonderfully (or troublingly) surreal state or situation.

Great interview Graig!! Theo and Billy provide interesting and informative collecting tactics!! Your channel gives collectors so much diversity including interviewing other collectors, the Monday session asking collectors questions, the Wednesday podcast answering collectors questions, showing video of the card shows you attend, sharing the cards you purchased for the month, sharing cards of your listeners for the month and providing podcasts of recent topics in the card hobby!! Appreciate all you do for the card community!!

Collecting sports cards is a delicate matter. Collecting sports cards isn't just about financial value; it's often driven by emotional attachments to players, teams, or specific moments in sports history. Balancing the desire to complete a collection with budgetary constraints, or market realities can be a challenge for collectors. Sometimes I think it should be limited to a set number of cards. 280 is about the max number of cards I want to own.
@RL3sports
@RL3sports 4 месяца назад
280? I have like 75k
@RL3sports

I have more than 280 cards from the 50's. I consider my collection small. 280 is so low.
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards 4 месяца назад
I certainly get that. To be honest, that's more along the lines of where I hope my collection winds up. I don't want so many cards that I'm just storing them, I want to be sure I can enjoy them as well.

A very fun and interesting discussion. Always a good time with Theo, and hearing his reasons for collecting and why he has a narrow approach. Where as, both you and Billy, are the complete opposite. Makes sense though. The hobby would be much more boring and dull imo if we all collected in the same way.
@MidLifeCards

Great discussion. When I got back into collecting in 2020, I decided to collect 70s vintage. Trying to collect every HOFer card from 1970-1980. I also try to collect 3 of each. One for the set, one raw and one graded.

I'm confused on what to think. I've seen Mangini can afford lots of great cards. When you have to search auction sites for 1 card you want because your collection is so narrow or so complete. It just doesn't sound fun anymore. I like that I can walk into Bill's and leave with dozens of cards. When you need a big, big show to find something you want, it doesn't sound fun anymore.
@MidLifeCards

It's a tough one. I agree. I think a little of each is probably the way to go.

Really enjoyed the discussion guys. Loved the different perspectives from each of you and can relate to all. I probably share some of each of your collecting mind sets as far as buying goes. I am also a little jealous that Theo can stick to his focusing on pretty much one player and a great one at that. I also like Billy, love a number of players and I do it with all four major sports which makes it extremely hard....lol Love the fact Graig that like me, when a great deal pops up you jump on it as the Williams card. Great purchase my friend. How can you pass that up, really? Thanks for sharing and all great channels that I am subscribed to, keep up the great work

Enjoyed the video guys....I started just about two years ago downsizing my large sports card and memorabilia collection and simply concentrating on amassing a collection of Graded Hall Of Famers baseball,basketball,football and hockey! I'm finding myself becoming a Grade "snob" though because I've been selling off any and all "raw" cards I can as well as any cards I currently have Grade 5.5 or lower.Greg Morris Cards has been instrumental in helping me "auction off" these raw cards and some "Graded" cards and using those proceeds to buy cards such as a 1958 Topps Clemente PSA 6,1959 Topps Mays PSA 6 and 1976 Topps Payton PSA 8 etc. Also,have used a local card shop to trade off some vintage memorabilia plus sports card sets and pickup more Graded HOF's. It's been enjoyable and therapeutic to be able to downsize my collection to a more manageable endeavor!
@MidLifeCards
@MidLifeCards 4 месяца назад
Part of downsizing usually includes upgrading quality. I don't think that makes you a snob, it's just a different style of collecting from how you used to collect.

Theo - a neat collection idea centered around Clemente for you to consider. Since the Clemente award began you could get the recipient’s topps card from each year. I created a mini collection of the Cardinals’ recipients. I haven’t decided on the Clemente card to go with it, but leaning toward the 1973 or topps living.
