I drove me MAD seeing my grandparents to get their dogs to lick their wounds because "nothing on earth is cleaner than a dog's mouth" Like didn't you watch him EATING POOP in the street 5minutes ago???

An important detail has been missed -- normally this bacteria doesn't cause any problem to people, unless the person is immunocompromised, has a lot of iron in the blood or has a spleen removed.

I won't let it change a thing. There's been so many times this could have been me or someone else. My dogs are very affectionate & I know other people's dogs are too. There is a old fellow in town here had the exact same outcome after being licked by a dog. No arms and no legs but he's happy to be alive.

This is scary and I know one woman who lost a leg due to an inflammation and one who almost lost it... One of them stepped onto something like a tiny piece of a branch while standing on her otherwise pristine lawn. That's all it took to say goodbye to her leg forever... It turned black at a crazy fast pace and no treatment helped... The other had a swollen leg (don't know the cause, but something apparently insignificant) and since it hurt, she went to a hospital but got turned back with only an antibacterial cream. As you might imagine, it got worse in no time and she tried to get back to the hospital, but they refused her saying that they had already given her a treatment and she just needed to apply it and it shall soon all be fine... She went to a different hospital, and there they told her that she should have come earlier, as it would have been just an hour or two later and she could have suffered an amputation! Lastly, every single time I got scratched by a cat, it caused swelling and a throbbing sensation. I'm so glad it neve escalated beyond that... Just a tiny scratch can still be scary enough!

Sepsis is an immune mistake. The dog infected her but her immune system overreacted.

That's why I like cats better. I used to have a big cat that looked just like Sylvester and one day I ate a ham sandwich and forgot to wipe my face after eating it and then I laid down on the sofa and that cat could smell the ham on my lips and he jumped me. He gave me the longest loud licks on face and his tongue felt like sand paper because he was really digging in. I tried not to laugh when he was doing it but eventually I had to stop it and just laugh. I miss that cat.

This is just a case of worst immune system. I have interacted with countless dogs(both domesticated and stray) and never got such infection. People should stop being too hygienic and keep themselves close to nature.

My cousin suffered the same thing. She even lost parts of her ears! So sad. The dog belonged to her daughter she had visited! 😮

I have rough housed with my dogs all my life where they often draw blood, then they will lick all my wounds clean and I have never had an infection.

I’m calling BS. My dogs lick me daily and we share food at times. I’m 63 yrs and had pets over 50 yrs. No health problems.

7 days for identification? How many decades ago was this? With mildly modern technology it'd be 3-4 days. With specific highly modern equipment it could be 1 day, but only for a select few bacteria.

Americans will find this hard to believe, but in some individual cases an American would have been better off getting medical care in Congo than in the US. Fever of unknown etiology is an actual diagnosis and empirical antibiotic treatment is usually started early. This particular bacterium and the disease it causes are difficult to identify, that much is true, however even a doctor who is still training in most 3rd world countries would most likely have prescribed an broad spectrum antibiotic right away. And this bacterium is sensitive to the most common antibiotics that are available everywhere, like Penicillin and Ampicillin. I hope she has a good life after this.

I think these extreme cases have more to do with one’s particular over-active/compromised immune system, than encountering the particular bacteria….these strains of bacteria are literally everywhere. But yea….avoid getting licked in the face by your dog. Also, if you get nibbled/scratched by your cat or dog, be sure to rinse the wound for several minutes under running water. That will flush the bacteria out (hopefully!).

Did they miss a Vibrio vulnificus infection? Given that C. Canimorsus is susceptible to beta-lactams, third generation cephalosporins, doxycycline, and clindamycin; it is hard to believe she was not put on at least one of those empirically pending culture results. What were her allergies? What were the antibiotic sensitivities to her C. Canimorsus isolate? Is she in any way immunocompromised? Had the dogs been treated with antibiotics recently? Did she live in a rural area with high levels of pesticide-induced pathogen resistance? Were any additional pathogens isolated from her cultures? This actually sounds like Vibrio vulinificus-not C. canimorsus which could have a mere commensal colonization. Vibrio vulnificus comes from waters and fish in warm climates, causes rapid sepsis and death, is hard to culture and diagnose, and is associated with blood clots that frequently cause amputations.

Yet many dog owners in public parks, recreation grounds, etc, just allow their pets to run-up to whoever sitting on a public bench minding their own business. If you say anything or object, then somehow you're the 'whatever' and the owner has done no wrong.

It WAS NOT the dogs fault. Dogs lick their humans all of the time. What likely cost her her limbs was the hospital. If they could do the blood test 7 days after she got sick, they could have done it when she first presented. We ALL have experienced doctors telling us "insurance won't cover" a test or treatment. They nickel and dimed this woman out of her limbs.
