A Dream of Red Mansions Trailer 

I will be rereading this book this year. I loved it when I read it first time, though I was so overwhelmed by the number of characters. It is a masterpiece and I can't imagine they could possibly capture even a tiny portion of the book but I'd still watch it just because it is such a wonderful story.

One of the best novels I've ever read. I finished it months ago and I still think about it all the time. I need to read it again because there is just so much. I feel though a lot of the taoist and and buddhist meaning behind things get lost not coming from the culture not to mention how much is lost in translation but David Hawkes did an amazing job.

I'm reading the Dream of the Red chamber now..I can only read it slow because of the number of characters. But I have to say, it is an amazing novel and it totally got me into historical books

A Dream of Red Mansions is the very height of the Chinese civilisation. It is better than The Tale of Genji, Moby Dick, or any other novels I have read. I love Milan Kundera, Fitzgerald, Yasunari Kawabata ... But compared to Red Mansions, theirs are genre novels. Red Mansions is a novel novel. The closest thing I can relate the novel to are Martin Scorsese's epic masterpieces. In that they share a moment to moment richness and brilliance. But the novel is still much, much elevated and better. To say Red Mansions is the pinnacle of the Chinese civilisation, is to ask the question: how many centuries, or millennials, do we have to wait until something better will come along. Because Red Mansions absorbs all the essences of what is Chinese since time immemorial, and reduce them into a story, a dream truer than all the truths known before Red Mansions. It is all the more beautiful as it is incomplete.

Oh Dear! I dearly want to watch this but there's no English Subtitles. Another comment has mentioned Ebay but no DVD available for Region 2. I am just about to finish reading the work. A life changing experience! This series got a bad reception but it seems more 'complete' and balanced to me (the supernatural aspects are included) and the narration and lack of 'correct' costume drama and the music do not really detract for me. Any help very welcome.
