Enjoy the drive from Kirkwall to Houton.
A drive from Kirkwall, the largest town and administrative center of Orkney, to the Houton Ferry terminal, which provides access to the Isle of Hoy, is a journey through the scenic and tranquil landscapes of the Orkney mainland.
Starting in Kirkwall, you would head southwest on the A964 road. This route takes you through the heart of Orkney's rolling farmland, offering picturesque views of verdant fields, scattered farms, and the occasional loch. The road is well-maintained but relatively narrow, typical of rural Scotland, so driving with caution and attentiveness is advised.
As you leave Kirkwall, you'll soon pass the historic Highland Park Distillery on your left, a renowned producer of single malt Scotch whisky. The distillery, established in 1798, is one of the northernmost distilleries in Scotland and is a point of interest for whisky enthusiasts.
Continuing on the A964, you pass through the village of Orphir. Orphir is known for its historical significance, including the Orphir Round Church, remnants of a medieval round church linked to the Earl's Bu and Viking history. A brief stop here provides a glimpse into the area's rich past.
The drive itself is serene, with minimal traffic and the peacefulness of the Orcadian countryside. The road winds gently, offering glimpses of the coast and the expansive views of Scapa Flow, a natural harbour with deep historical significance, particularly during both World Wars.
As you approach the Houton Ferry terminal, located near the small settlement of Houton, the landscape becomes slightly more rugged and coastal. The terminal itself is modest but functional, with facilities to accommodate passengers and vehicles.
Upon arrival at Houton, you can board a ferry operated by Orkney Ferries, which will take you across Scapa Flow to the Isle of Hoy. Hoy is renowned for its dramatic cliffs, the famous sea stack known as the Old Man of Hoy, and its diverse wildlife and walking trails. The ferry journey offers stunning seascapes and a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of the Orkney archipelago from the water.
Overall, the drive from Kirkwall to Houton is not just a simple point-to-point journey but an opportunity to experience the serene and captivating landscapes of Orkney, steeped in history and natural beauty.
