This is the band's finest moment for sure. They perfected their melodic, Gothic take on Black Metal with "Dusk and Her Embrace". Say what you want about them, but their early albums (this one included) are definitely masterful pieces of melodic Black Metal.
@@Funerealnight1349 Well, when it comes to gothic atmosphere I actually think that Midian is their best - although it is less interesting from a drummer's point of view.
I think a big difference between Barker and other extreme metal drummers is his use of symbols and double bass. His use of double bass is very musical and elegant.
They didn't put their best effort in Vempire? Don't know what interviews you're referring to, but the fact is - Dani & co. couldn't be any more professional when making an album as they were on Vempire. What resulted was, without question, their single best effort to date. Vempire had everything - Dani's vocals ranging from absolutely insane screeches to deep, bass, almost whisper-like narrative voices that were tremendously fitting the entire "dark faerytale" concept of the album, Stuart's blazing, razor-sharp but still charmingly melodic riffs, Nick's relentless, straightforward kicks, snares and cymbals that were, contrary to Dusk, all HEARD clearly and loudly, Robin's ever present nocturnal pulse bass that would stand out almost solely over other instruments on several occassions during the album, and of course Damien's (or, in the case of recording of this EP, Keith Appleton's) beautifully gloomy, almost funeral-like keyboards enhanced by the usual contribution from Sarah Jezebel Deva & co. here and there. But most importantly, this EP contained three absolute COF classics: Ebony Dressed For Sunset, Queen of Winter Throned and The Rape And Ruin of Angels (Hosannas In Extremis), with the latest being perhaps the most underrated gem in the band's entire history.
You really know your stuff, friend. Agreed on every point. ESPECIALLY on The Rape and Ruin of Angels. I could never understand how that song could be so fucking underrated. It's almost annoying.
V Empire never was meant as an Album. It was always an EP, 6 Songs, 36Minutes and it has definitly really awesome Versions of Nocturnal Supremacy and The Forest Whispers on it as well as Queen of Winter, Throned and "Ebony dressed for Sunset" soon becoming real classics.
You forgot to mention the most underrated song in their whole catalog - which I personally consider one of their best -, The Rape and Ruin of Angels (Hosannas in Extremis)
in drums section, i think he's talking about the drum fill at dusk and the embrace at 4:40, mindblowing. It's like 10 drummers playing at the same time in perfect harmony,
Vempire was considered by the band as an EP, not an album. I don't feel like it's rushed in the slightest, Dani even wanted to prove the renewed band was better than original line-up, so they wanted it very professional sounding. And it is. Vempire, Dusk and Cruelty are all top-notch Cradle of Filth in their prime and among the best releases ever made within metal history.
You're absolutely right on Vempire, Sir! As far as the production, this EP was actually the band's pinnacle effort, and the same goes for the quality of the songs. Ebony Dressed For Sunset, Queen of Winter Throned, The Rape And Ruin of Angels (Hosannas in Extremis)... you name it! Everything on this opus was top notch from start to finish - be it the performances of the respective band members, the lyrics, the booklet, the track order and even the length. 36 minutes of insane but carefully composed horror symphony that, with the exception of 5th track, wouldn't allow the listener a breather even for a second. But most importantly, it was the band's darkest album.
Great job! Wonderful album Dusk! Barker did a great job in Cruelty & the Beast as well! And that excellent drum work is finally given that spotlight that it deserved in the 're-mistressed' version! How did you like the remix/remaster of Cruelty?
Thank you for this review, it make my day. This album was my entry to extreme metal. Remember listening to Funeral and Haunted shores over and over, on my way to school, in the school :) and as a lullaby during falling asleep with my headphones on. Guess how the next morning started. Actually when I heard you talking about the cymbals, I had to pause your video and play these two songs after years. Nicolas is epic and Funeral is masterpeace!
A bit of a knowledge bomb you might appreciate: the drums are actually the only instrument that wasn't re-recorded in 1996, they're from the '95 version. Same with some of the vocals. Everything else was re-recorded.
my first COF album(actually on cassete!) when released.a masterpiece of black metal.back then many call them posers, fuck them.Danny is a genius and an icon.I love all the their 90s stuff and midian, and the last two.and of course nicholas barker....what to say for this machine
Great review! Cradle Of Filth has surprisingly literate lyrics, as you said, that most extreme metal bands simply don't have. I would also posit that Dani Filth is one of the greatest vocalists in extreme metal with one of the broadest ranges and the music is built to reflect and utilize that range.
Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Ich schaue deine Videos schon seit lange her und die Qualität deinen RU-vidkanal ist großartig geworden. Ach tja, und noch dazu Schlagzeuger von Keep of Kalessin geworden! Super!
In fact, the reason that the CD is red knowing that the album is in green is only because the color "Red" is the complementary color of "Green". (The Principle of Evil Color Made Flesh) Joke aside... That was a logic choice and it fits very well.
Never listened to this album. And after watching your review video, I am listening to the whole album tomorrow when I have the the time. Nick Barker is one of a kind. Got to see Dimmu Borgir in early 2000's. It was fantastic. The band ripped. And seeing Nick behind the kit was truly amazing and inspiring His skill, his speed and the most bad ass made for metal drum set was top shelf. I picked up there album that week. I have a question: What are your thoughts on Dave Culross of Malevolent Creation and Suffocation? He is a favorite of mine.
