Git is great for software projects, but for a collection of notes like my denote collection, file based versioning makes more sense. The notes do nit depend on each other, so why commit them all together? I feel RCS or SRC would be better suited for that.

@@KManAbout thats true and could lead to an issue if you link to a place that does not exist in all versions. But if you just link to the file itself, then thats safe and needs no version control

Why would they need permission from all contributors? I thought this was Free software?

It all depends on the license. A person contributing to a software under the GPL license, because of the nature of the license (it literally makes open-source a spreading disease, other software that uses or forks it must protect the freedoms promised by the license, even if the fork does a completely different thing, if it is built on the GPL licensed software). For example, a software under the BSD license (and the contributors) agree that the only thing they want is their copyright notice left in the source code and in the binary distribution (also not being held responsible for any derivatives of the software). While GPL is stricter, it protects free-software. BSD is more relaxed, therefore closed-source applications may use it just by giving credit (as said above, the copyright notice must be intact in the source code and in the binary of the program). What if you were a free-software developer, and you contributed to a project thinking it was a good project and that its open-source nature helped you a lot too in your practical problems, but then the author of the project decided to close-source it? Would you like that to happen? If you did not, under the GPL license, you may refuse the license change, and the author could not close-source it unless they remove all of your code. Under the BSD license, the license only limits the author to keep the copyright notice, therefore they can do whatever they want as long as they credit you.
