As a Portland resident, I go on the Bibby Stockholm every week. Everybody - the community, the people on board, and the staff working professionally - are coping with the situation as well as they can. But it's still the wrong thing in the wrong place, and nobody is happy about it on any side of the argument.
Asylum seekers are not "illegal" - they're seeking asylum. I've never met anyone on the Bibby Stockholm who came by boat. But the (quite small) numbers of people who are coming by boat are coming because the legal safe routes have been stopped. If you don't want people to come by boat, you need some legal safe routes.
The Green Party welcomes the contributions that migrants and refugees make to British society. We want to be welcoming, promote social cohesion and support migrants to put down roots.
