Thought you might want a little background on the Cleland Mine. In 1933 Duke Cleland and Howard Bryant went in as partners on these claims. I believe it’s 8 claims. During WWII they were serving their country so for those years the mining ceased. There was a rack mounted as you came around the corner and see the main house with each year welded on a metal strip. 1933 until he passed in the 90’s. Scrappers stole them for $$ As a family we spent every possible weekend at the Mine. It was a hobby. All of us kids loved it. He’d dynamite one weekend. We’d muck the next. The windmills were not for power. We had a generator. The wire from the main cabin was for a handcrank telephone at the main tunnel. Which also was stolen as well as all the ore carts he had accumulated. Duke collected stuff. He was not a big drinker. He liked a shot of whiskey on occasion. And he and my aunt shared a glass of wine of an evening. But the bottles you see everywhere we’re collected from businesses in Bishop CA where he ran CLELAND BROTHERS RECAPPING. For 60+ years he was the original ‘recycler’ in his tinkering projects. Hauling his stuff over to the Mine on weekends. A fun guy and a fun uncle to all of us kids. I still have my original hard hat that I wore in all our adventures.

Duke Clealand owned a re-cap tire store in Bishop, Calif. His brother Sam owned the Coca cola bottling plant in Bishop. Both were WWll vets and worked for my Dad before the war. They had a few mines around the country to play with.

I don't know if the bottle structure has the same meaning for the family but here in the south it's a type of safety totem. It's thought that the colorful glass attracted the devil/spirits and they would go into the bottle and get trapped then they wouldn't bother the people living there. Very interesting to see it there. :)

What's odd about these sites is the people who spent so much hard work, time, and money developing them one day never come back leave everything there. I would think if your winding down a mining site that played out one would round everything up of value and sell it all. It's like these people just one day quit coming up there the only thing I can think is who ever was last working it died or got too old and could not return to get their things.

There’s a post apocalyptic themed video game called Fallout New Vegas. The old abandoned ruins in the desert setting look just like it, and the currency in the story is bottle caps, so kinda ironic that you find them in abundance on the track. Lol
@lbj4993
@lbj4993 3 года назад
Super nice channel, but short on showing anything in detail when specifics are mentioned or anything passes by the camera, as in bottle caps on the track or pointing out what the many bottles had been used for etc etc etc. It seems hurried and the camera is shaky to say the least because the content provider always seems to be hurrying through everything (except the long long trails)...I think I speak for many when I say quality is way more appreciated than quantity, particularly when it comes to places like these that are rarely ever seen by most; I for one would love to see more detail and less speed and I don't see a need for all the chatter about the constant upcoming 360...and I as well would love to see more emphasis on views and backgrounds from some of the higher elevations. I happened to have taken many trips into these very same areas, and what got me started several years ago was the ghost town of Bodie, which lies a bit north of Death Valley, as well as the whole Mt.Whitney/Lone Pine areas close by; what an awesome place. I'm obviously not complaining here, just making suggestions to an otherwise great channel.

Your heavy breathing keeps me thinking you're going to drop dead of a heart attack. Very distracting. Maybe move your camera away from your head. Great exploration.

You keep saying how ( neet ) & ( cool ) everything is . All I see is the most horrific mess of junk & debre scattered all over . What if the who desert looked like that ? Why wasn't it ever cleaned up ? Just leaving it a mass trash pile !

BACK IN THE 1960'S AND 70.S i WENT TO TUBA CITY , ARIZONEA AND MET A NAVAJO POLICE OFFICER AND BECAME BLOOD BROTHERS. HE TOOK ME ON SEVERAL REAL BACK INTO THE DESERT SURVIVAL JOURNIES SEEING OLD RUINS THAT ARE NOT EVEN REGISTERED. I LOST TRACK OF HIM IN THE LATE 1990'S, HIS FAMILT WERE A VERY LARGE FAMILY. HE WAS WM. BILL BILLAGODDY OR IN THAT WHELM OF SPELLING. HE LIVED WITH HIS ELDERLY MOTHER IN A GOGON AND I STAYED WITH THEM AND ATE FOOD COOKED ON AN OLD CAR GAS TANK AND SLEPT ON A PAD ON THE DIRT FLOOR.

thanks for the great vids. I was wondering if you take security with you on these lonely journey's? I also wondered what you might do if you were bit by a snake or stung by a scorpion up in those desolate hills and mines.

You have such great contend but I get exhausted listening to your huffing and puffing. Maybe you could take a break, catch your breath then start talking. Just a suggestion.

You pan around too quickly with the camera. Makes it difficult to take in all the artifacts. @ 6:44 you say the mine doesn't go in very far, but after stopping the video to read the notes left over the mine it says it 2200 feet.
