yeah! I'm from bangladesh, and I used to work at target. I heard a couple speaking in bangla, and I said tumi bangla bholo? which means you speak bangla? and they were caught off guard

There's this joke here in Sweden that Swedes only like each other when we're abroad on vacation and there is a bit of truth to it. Never really thought about why it is before but I think that this might be the explanation for it.

Yeah dude its a great feeling. I guess native english speakers cant really relate as English is spoken pretty much anywhere, but it touches your heart. I actually had no idea that this guy was romanian like myself, but i live abroad and it has happened to me a couple times for people to say a few words in romanian to me when i least expected it. Its always a great feeling

Then they teach from about noon to 9pm fully immersed in their mission language. Elders (Male missionaries) typically serve 2 year missions while Sisters (Female missionaries) typically serve for 1.5 years. In Utah, you often find yourself surrounded a bunch of white people who fluently speak languages from around the world. In my friend group alone there are people who speak Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Filipino and Malaysian. I personally served a 2 year mission in the Philippines and got to learn Filipino (Tagalog).

Ye, but, to be honest, I don't know how appropiate it really is, to ask that, knowing how uncomfortable it is for the person to answer. If it's a joke, I guess, ok. @@JHulse29 He probably didn't think they were just visiting the US when he asked that question. It's not unusual for someone who immigrated young to speak their native language poorly. Especially a language like Romanian that wouldn't be heard much outside of the home in the US. I don't speak Romanian, but I've seen other people say that Sebastian is fluent but speaks it with a very noticeable American accent because he's been in the US for most of his life.

He did switch the subject really fast but I thought it was a pretty smooth transition and it most likely was so he didn't embarrass the girl.

that's crazy, I never knew you learn the language. I always saw missionaries on the streets but they always seemed like a fish out of water, very meek and kind of geeky (no offence, it's just the uniform that makes people feel like they're very stand-offish)

@@JadedKate Haha none taken, a lot of the time it’s an intimidating time when you walk the streets at a place that is out of your element at first but then once you immerse yourself into whatever culture surrounds you then it becomes 2nd nature. Pretty amazing stuff. The CIA and othe Gov. agencies hang around our Missionary Training Center because of how fast we pick up the languages and also within those languages you obtain the perfect accents and understand the differing dialects as well.
