A Farewell to Amtrak 156 

For those who are wondering, *NO,* 156 is *NOT* being scrapped. It is undergoing repairs and will be repainted into the Phase 1 50’th anniversary scheme!

There's no articles about 156 getting scrapped.

Well this is sad, I almost had the chance to see it in-person in October 2020.

I Only Saw 156 Back in October Of 2020. It Was The ONLY Time I saw her in Person.

Yes, 156 is scrapped, but not because it hit a tree. It struck a dump truck while leading the Sunset Limited, and then it was scrapped. The tree did little to no damage to 156.

I filmed 156 once in July 2020, I was in Paso Robles, California filming the Coast Starlight. That is the one and only Heritage Unit I have caught. It's sad...

I have catch Amtrak 42, Amtrak 130, Amtrak 145, Amtrak 822 and Amtrak 184, but not Amtrak 156, that’s the only paint scheme train I haven’t caught, farewell Amtrak 156

Amtrak 156 is Not Being Scrap.

Not sure where you got the rumor, but their are no plans to scrap this loco. It's awaiting repair. I literally just checked in the computer 10 minutes ago. The damage is not that bad. Any P42 that has already gone through the current rebuild program and ends up being damaged will not be automatically scrapped. They will be assessed on a case by case basis. You may certainly start to see less loco's being fixed after heavy damage now, but they are not going to scrap an otherwise good running loco with some bent parts and cosmetic damage.

Actually, in my opinion, 156 will be one of the 50th anniversary heritage units, and it will NEVER EVER be scrapped.

Where did amtrak say that? 156 doesn't have significant damage and the alcs aren't coming for quite some time. So most likely they are going to repair it.

I’ve actually seen 156 for the first time leading the Texas Eagle in Dallas, even though it got a horn change. Obviously I’m gonna miss the phase one heritage unit so much.

How come they are being replaced

What a rumor mill. About the only thing that is mutually agreeable here is that everyone loves the 156. The reality is this. As posted on several drone videos on RU-vid as recently as 2 months ago (April 2024) the 156 is sitting in a dead line in Beech Grove. ALL its roof hatches are off so it is logical to assume key components have been removed. The shell appears intact, but there are photos posted online showing extensive nose collision damage. Draw your own conclusions until something official surfaces.

ALC-42s are coming soon. Do not forget some P42DCs are retiring. Its also said that the ALC-42s wil enter service in 2022

Out of all the original heritage locomotives from 2011, only 184 has not been scrapped. All the other ones are gone which is crazy to me
